To test webhook signature verification locally, forward or generate a provider-signed event to your local handler, verify it using the matching local signing secret and the original raw request body, then confirm that altered requests are rejected. Test delivery through the actual local HTTP endpoint as well as the verifier itself: that catches mistakes in headers, middleware, and body handling.
Set up a provider-faithful local delivery
- Start your webhook handler. Note the local URL and route that receives events, such as
http://localhost:3000/webhooks. - Use the provider’s official CLI or SDK to deliver a test event. For Stripe, run
stripe listen --forward-to <local-url>to forward events to the local URL. The CLI provides a signing secret for this local forwarding workflow. Stripe’s CLI documentation describes listening and forwarding. - Configure the matching secret. Use the secret supplied for the local forwarding session in the handler’s local configuration. Do not assume it is the same as a dashboard endpoint secret or a secret from another provider or environment. Keep it out of committed code.
- Send a test event. With Stripe,
stripe trigger <event>generates a test event; a trigger can also cause related events. Check the listener output and your application logs to establish which delivery reached the route. - Verify before parsing or transforming the body. Preserve the raw request bytes and pass them to the provider’s supported verifier along with the headers and secret required by that provider. Parse the JSON only after verification succeeds.
This exercises the local HTTP route, header handling, and application middleware—not just a standalone cryptographic function. Exact raw-body setup varies by framework, so follow the relevant framework and provider documentation rather than assuming a generic middleware configuration.

Preserve the exact input the provider signed
A webhook signature authenticates provider-defined signing input, not an abstract JSON object. Parsing and serializing JSON can change whitespace, key order, or bytes. Even if the resulting JSON appears equivalent, the signature may no longer match.
Svix explicitly requires the raw request body for verification, together with the message ID and timestamp. Its guide explains that “the cryptographic signature is sensitive to even the slightest changes.” See Svix’s verification guide.

For Svix, the documented signing input is webhook_id + "." + webhook_timestamp + "." + raw_body, signed with HMAC-SHA256. For manual calculations, the HMAC key is the base64 portion of the secret after the whsec_ prefix. In application code, prefer Svix’s supported verifier; do not reuse this formula for a different provider.
Pass Svix’s Webhook-Id, Webhook-Timestamp, and Webhook-Signature header values as received. In particular, do not replace the timestamp with your own value or reconstruct signature headers from parsed or normalized data.

Prove both acceptance and rejection
A successful delivery alone does not show that verification protects the endpoint. Use a small test matrix that checks the valid path and the failures that matter:
Recommended Free Tools
| Test | What to do | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Valid delivery | Send an unchanged event through the provider’s local CLI or SDK with the matching local secret. | The verifier accepts it and the handler proceeds. |
| Changed body | Change a byte in the body while keeping the original signature. | Verification fails. |
| Changed signature | Alter or replace the signature while keeping the body and other signing inputs unchanged. | Verification fails. |
| Stale or out-of-window timestamp | Use a timestamp outside the provider’s accepted window, where the scheme supports timestamp validation. | Verification fails when the timestamp is outside the allowed window. |
The altered-body, altered-signature, and timestamp cases are a practical test recommendation based on the signing inputs and replay checks; providers do not necessarily prescribe a particular test-suite structure.

Check timestamp handling and replay protection
Timestamp validation helps limit replay attacks as well as authenticate a signed delivery. Svix says its libraries reject timestamps more than five minutes from the current time. That is a Svix library behavior, not a universal webhook rule. Keep the development machine’s clock synchronized, and use the provider’s documented window when testing another scheme.
If an otherwise valid Svix test fails, check that the timestamp is current, the raw body is unchanged, and the received headers and message ID are passed to the verifier. A correct secret cannot compensate for an altered signing input or an out-of-window timestamp.

Choose the right level of local test
- Provider CLI or SDK delivery: Best for checking provider-specific signing, headers, and delivery to the local HTTP endpoint. For Stripe, the listener and trigger commands provide a repeatable route for local test events.
- Verifier-level test: Useful for quickly checking acceptance and rejection against known signing inputs. By itself, it does not exercise the local route, middleware, or raw-body capture.
- Handcrafted request: Useful for targeted negative cases only when you construct the provider’s signing input correctly. A hand-built request with the wrong formula or secret can fail for reasons unrelated to the handler under test.
For reliable coverage, combine provider-faithful delivery with negative verifier tests. Make sure the secret, body representation, headers, and timestamp all belong to the same local test setup.
