Add it to functional tests: those tests navigate the site and establish the state; Percy checks how that state looks. A diff is evidence of a visual change, not a verdict that the change is wrong.
What Percy checks—and what it does not
Visual regression testing compares rendered pages or components over time to reveal changes in layout and styling. A page can pass its functional checks while a heading wraps differently, a control shifts, or spacing changes unexpectedly. Percy captures the rendered UI and compares it with an earlier approved screenshot. Reviewers then decide whether each difference is intended and should be accepted, or should be fixed.

Choose the pages and states worth protecting
Start with a manageable set of high-value pages and representative components: for example, a key landing page, a checkout state, or a navigation menu after it has opened. A snapshot is only useful as a comparison when the test reaches the same meaningful state on each run.

- Use functional test steps to navigate, sign in or establish test data, and reveal the state to capture.
- Take the snapshot after the relevant content and UI state are present.
- Keep test data and page conditions reproducible so expected content changes do not create unrelated diffs.
Waiting for network activity to settle appears in Percy’s documented Playwright example, but it is not a universal wait strategy: applications can keep requests open or render content after network activity quiets. Choose a wait condition that fits the app and verify that the snapshot represents the intended state. Consult the integration instructions for framework-specific stabilization options.
Add Percy to a Playwright test
Set up the project and token
- Create a Percy Web project and retrieve its project token.
- Set the token in the environment as
PERCY_TOKEN. Store it as a secret in CI rather than committing it to the repository. - Install the Playwright integration with
npm install --save-dev @percy/playwright.
Capture a snapshot
This runnable example follows Percy’s documented Node.js integration pattern. It assumes Playwright is installed and that the test environment supplies PERCY_TOKEN.

Run and review
Run the test through your local workflow or CI environment with the token available. Open the resulting Percy build to inspect the comparison and approve intended changes or send unintended ones back for correction. Percy supports CI/CD and source-control review integrations, but setup varies by framework, CI provider, and repository; use the instructions for your combination in the Percy integrations documentation.
Choose project type and browser coverage
Percy Web or Percy on Automate
With Percy Web, browser selection is managed through Percy. With Percy on Automate, browser selection follows the capabilities configured for the Automate session. Choose based on where browser configuration belongs in your test setup; the Percy project types guide explains the distinction.
Enable browsers deliberately
Cross-browser rendering can expose differences that a single browser misses. Select browsers relevant to your audience and application rather than enabling every option by default. Each enabled browser produces a separate screenshot and counts separately toward usage.

Not every browser-specific difference is a product regression: operating-system and browser rendering can affect fonts, native form controls, and scrollbars. Inspect diffs in their browser context before deciding whether to change the UI or accept the difference. See cross-browser visual testing.
Set a baseline strategy that matches review practice
Percy compares a build against a base build. The baseline strategy determines the unit of approval and how the base is selected.

These behaviors are described in Percy baseline management. Pick the strategy that matches how your team wants approvals to advance future comparisons; build-level and snapshot-level review are not interchangeable.

Read diffs without treating every pixel change as a bug
For each reported difference, identify the affected element and state, then decide whether the change is intentional, a rendering difference, or a regression. A changed baseline should follow review rather than being treated as a way to silence an unexplained diff.
- Unexpected content or layout: Check test data, the page state reached, and whether the UI itself changed.
- Browser-specific font, control, or scrollbar change: Compare the browser renderings separately and decide whether that difference matters for supported users.
- Small or irrelevant changes: Percy support documentation identifies diff sensitivity and ignored regions as topics for reducing false-positive visual diffs. Apply such controls narrowly, so meaningful changes remain visible. See the Percy Support Center.
Troubleshoot common setup and review problems
No snapshot appears in Percy
- Confirm the test actually reaches the snapshot call and that the test process can access the project token through
PERCY_TOKEN. - Check that the integration package is installed in the environment running the test and that the test is being run through the intended Percy workflow.
- Use the framework integration guide and the CI-specific integration instructions to check configuration for that environment.
The captured page is incomplete or inconsistent
- Make the test wait for the meaningful app state, not merely the initial navigation event.
- If a network-idle wait never completes, investigate persistent requests and select a condition appropriate to the page rather than assuming that one wait mode works for every app.
- Check that test data, authentication, and any state-changing setup are repeatable between builds.
There are many diffs but no clear regression
- Inspect whether the snapshots represent the same state and browser configuration as the baseline.
- Separate browser-specific rendering changes from app changes.
- Review Percy’s controls for adjusting diff sensitivity or ignoring regions, and avoid broad exclusions that could hide real layout changes.
The new build compares against an unexpected baseline
Check the selected baseline strategy and, for Git baseline management, the base branch and Git history used for base-build selection. If the team needs independent approval of individual snapshots, assess whether Visual Git better fits that workflow. The baseline management guide describes the selection behavior.
