Start by defining what the test must decide—permit compliance, process troubleshooting, pretreatment evaluation, or treatment design. Then choose the relevant metals, the dissolved or total-recoverable fraction, and an analytical method with reporting limits suited to that decision. Have the receiving laboratory confirm sampling and preservation instructions before collecting anything; a generic “metals” result alone is not enough to choose treatment.
What question should the test answer?
Set the purpose before requesting an analysis. A compliance sample must meet the applicable permit and regulatory requirements. A troubleshooting sample should help locate or explain a process problem. A design sample should represent the wastewater the proposed system will actually receive.

Identify the discharge point or process stream being evaluated, and check the applicable permit or receiving-system requirements for limits, analytes, sampling locations, and approved methods. EPA lists methods approved under Clean Water Act section 304(h) at 40 CFR Part 136, but the method required for a particular result depends on the applicable regulatory program and permit. Confirm that requirement with the regulator or laboratory.

Should you test dissolved or total-recoverable metals?
These fractions answer different questions. EPA Method 200.8 defines dissolved concentration as the amount that passes through a 0.45 µm membrane filter before the sample is acidified. For total-recoverable analysis, an aqueous sample is not filtered; it is acidified, and digestion or extraction is required when metals in particulate matter need to be brought into solution.
| Fraction | Sample treatment in EPA Method 200.8 | What the result represents |
|---|---|---|
| Dissolved | Filter through a 0.45 µm membrane before acidification. | Metals passing through that filter under the method’s definition. |
| Total recoverable | Do not filter; acidify, with digestion or extraction when particulate metals are present. | Recoverable metals in the unfiltered sample, including metals brought into solution from particulate material through the required preparation. |
Choose the fraction that matches the permit or treatment question. If both dissolved and particulate-associated metals could matter, ask the laboratory or regulator whether both fractions are needed rather than assuming one can stand in for the other.

Which metals and analytical method should you request?
Build the analyte list from permit conditions, process knowledge, prior results, and likely metal inputs. Method 200.8 covers a multi-element panel that includes arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, vanadium, and zinc, among other elements. That broad coverage does not establish which analytes are relevant at a particular facility.

Ask the laboratory which approved method can measure the required analytes at the reporting limits you need, for the sample fraction and wastewater matrix involved. EPA’s approved-method list includes the following options; the materials cited here do not establish that one is universally superior for every wastewater.

| Method | Technique or scope established by EPA | Point to confirm for your project |
|---|---|---|
| 200.7 | ICP-AES; listed among EPA-approved Clean Water Act methods. | Confirm analyte coverage, required reporting limits, sample preparation, and acceptance under your permit with the lab or regulator. |
| 200.8 | ICP-MS; a trace-element method for waters and wastes, including dissolved and total-recoverable analyses in wastewater. | Confirm the suitable fraction, preparation, achievable reporting limits for your matrix, and any permit-specific requirements. |
| 200.9 | Graphite furnace atomic absorption; listed among EPA-approved methods. | Ask whether it is appropriate for the analytes and reporting limits required for your sample and regulatory purpose. |
| 218.6 | An analyte-specific method for dissolved hexavalent chromium. | Confirm whether dissolved hexavalent chromium, rather than a broader chromium result, is the required measurement. |
ICP-MS and ICP-AES are laboratory measurement techniques, not treatment systems. A field kit or handheld screen may help identify a reason to investigate, but it should not be treated as a substitute for an applicable Part 136 method or permit-required laboratory data.
How should you prepare for sampling?
Get the laboratory’s instructions before collecting wastewater. Method 200.8 includes filtration and acid preservation for dissolved analyses and describes preparation for total-recoverable analyses; its details are method-specific. Do not assume that a container, preservative, sample volume, holding time, or shipping procedure is suitable for every analyte or method.

- Contact the receiving laboratory. Specify the analytes, purpose, sample fraction, and applicable permit or method requirement. Ask it to confirm containers, preservative, volume, holding time, shipping, and any analyte-specific exceptions.
- Confirm the sampling point and plan. Use the location and collection approach needed to represent the discharge or process stream you intend to evaluate. If compliance is the objective, check the permit or regulator’s requirements before sampling.
- Follow the fraction-specific instructions. For dissolved analysis, filtration must occur before acidification under Method 200.8. For total-recoverable analysis, the sample is unfiltered; digestion or extraction may be needed when particulates are present.
- Keep the sample representative. Method 200.8 calls for samples to be well mixed and homogeneous before aliquoting. Follow the laboratory’s directions for mixing and handling so the portion analyzed represents the collected sample.
- Document handling and custody. Use the laboratory’s submission and chain-of-custody process, and record the sample location and collection details it requests.
A 0.45 µm filter assembly is relevant only when the sampling plan calls for dissolved-metal analysis. Filtering a sample without that plan can change what is being measured.

- 8-way Heavy Metals Water Test Kit: With our 8 parameters Heavy metals water test strips, you will know levels of Iron, Mercury, Copper, Lead, Chromium, Magnesium, Cadmium and Calcium easily
- Analytes tested and units reported.
- Whether each result is dissolved or total recoverable.
- Detection and reporting limits, and whether they are low enough for the applicable limit or treatment objective.
- Quality-control information and any flags for matrix interference or other analytical issues.
- The method and sample preparation used.
Method 200.8 cautions that detection limits and working ranges depend on the sample matrix, instrument, and operating conditions. It also addresses spectral and matrix interferences, correction, and quality control. If a result is qualified, near a decision threshold, or reported with a limit too high to answer your question, ask the laboratory what the flag means and whether another analysis is needed before acting on it.
What information is needed before choosing treatment?
Compare representative results with the applicable discharge limits and treatment goals, then evaluate them alongside the wastewater conditions that affect treatment. A metals concentration by itself does not establish which treatment method will work best.
- Flow and how it varies over time.
- pH and competing constituents in the wastewater.
- Whether the metals are dissolved, associated with particulates, or present in both fractions.
- Variability in the process stream and the representativeness of the samples.
- Solids handling and residual-disposal constraints.
Use the test results and those operating constraints in a treatment evaluation with a qualified process engineer. The EPA methods described here establish ways to measure metals; they do not compare treatment performance or select a technology for a particular facility.
