How to Test SimpliSafe Sensors and Fix Devices That Won’t Connect

Learn how to test SimpliSafe sensors in Test Mode, troubleshoot an unresponsive or unpairable Entry Sensor, and fix an app-to-Base-Station connection problem.

To test a SimpliSafe sensor, put the system in Test Mode and check whether the Base Station announces the device. If it does not, test the sensor close to the Base Station, then check its battery and pairing. If the app instead says “Device Connection Problem,” that points to the app’s connection to the Base Station—not necessarily a faulty sensor.

How do I test my SimpliSafe sensor?

Test Mode checks whether the Base Station receives a device’s signal. A spoken device-name confirmation is the key result. It does not always prove that the sensor detects the physical event it is meant to monitor, so some devices need a second, separate check.

Current SimpliSafe system

  1. On the Keypad, press Menu, enter your Master PIN, and select Test Mode.
  2. Follow the instructions for each device. The Keypad screen confirms Test Mode with “Test each device by pressing its button.”
  3. When finished, use the left side of the Keypad screen to exit Test Mode.

On a monitored system, entering Test Mode prompts an automated call and creates a “User Initiated Test” event. SimpliSafe says the call is not an emergency and an unanswered call does not result in a dispatch request. See SimpliSafe’s Test Mode instructions.

What to do for each device

  • Entry Sensor: Press its top button and listen for “Entry Sensor.” Then open the protected door or window to confirm the sensor detects an opening.
  • Motion Sensor Gen 1 or Gen 2: Press the top button, or the bottom button if the sensor is mounted upside down for pets. Leave the room for 15 seconds, then return. The Base Station should announce “Motion Sensor.”
  • Glassbreak Sensor: Press its top button, then clap once near the monitored window while Test Mode is active. The test threshold is lowered so a clap can trigger it.
  • Temperature Sensor or Water Sensor: Press the top button and listen for “Freeze Sensor” or “Water Sensor,” respectively.
  • Smoke Detector, CO Detector, or combined Smoke & CO Detector: Press and release the relevant test button for no longer than one second. The device should beep three or four times, and the Base Station should announce it.
  • Panic Button: Hold it for two seconds. The built-in Keypad Panic Button can be tested in Test Mode without a dispatch request, according to SimpliSafe.
  • Extra Siren: Press its top test button. The siren is rated at 105 dB, so protect your hearing.

Original SimpliSafe system

The Original system has different Keypad steps: press Menu and enter the Master PIN, press HOME until “Test Mode” appears, then press AWAY to enter. The Base Station announces the device type when it receives a signal. For an Original motion sensor, leave the room for 15 seconds before returning. During Test Mode, an Original glassbreak sensor can respond to any loud sound, although in normal use it is designed to respond to breaking glass. SimpliSafe says it no longer offers a CO Detector for the Original system and directs affected owners to support about upgrading. See the Original SimpliSafe Test Mode guide.

Why won’t my SimpliSafe sensor connect?

First distinguish a sensor that does not pair from one that is already paired but does not respond in a test. For an Entry Sensor that will not pair, SimpliSafe recommends these steps in order, trying to pair again after each one.

  1. Reset the Entry Sensor’s battery connection. Slide the sensor off its bracket, remove the battery briefly, wait at least 15 seconds, then reinsert it. Press the pairing button and check whether the LED blinks.
  2. Replace the battery if there is no visible LED. SimpliSafe specifies one CR-2032 Lithium 3V battery for the Entry Sensor. The company estimates its battery life at up to five years, depending on placement and usage; that estimate applies to the Entry Sensor, not every SimpliSafe device.
  3. Try pairing near the Base Station. Temporarily move the sensor close to it and try pairing. If pairing works nearby, return the sensor to its intended location and check signal strength in the app. Metal doors and dense building materials can interfere with communication.
  4. Power-cycle the Base Station as a last step. Unplug it. With a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the screw and bottom cover, then remove one Base Station battery. Wait 60 seconds or until the Base Station announces “Power Outage.” Reassemble and reconnect it; wait for “Welcome to SimpliSafe,” then try pairing again.

These pairing and battery instructions are specific to the Entry Sensor; do not assume another sensor uses the same battery. See SimpliSafe’s Entry Sensor pairing steps.

Why does SimpliSafe say a sensor is not responding?

A sensor that fails to trigger an announcement may have a battery problem or be too far from the Base Station. The result alone does not prove the sensor has failed. Use Test Mode to compare its response in its usual location with its response close to the Base Station.

  1. Put the system in Test Mode and test the sensor where it is normally used.
  2. If the Base Station does not announce it, bring the sensor into the Base Station’s room and repeat the test.
  3. If it works nearby but not in its usual location, investigate distance or interference. SimpliSafe generally advises placing the Base Station centrally; electronics-heavy areas may have more interference.
  4. If it still does not respond nearby, check the battery or device-specific instructions. For an Original SimpliSafe sensor, consult the applicable Original-system guidance rather than assuming current-system steps apply.

SimpliSafe’s guidance for Original-system products says most should last three to five years on batteries, with the Keypad needing replacement more often. This is general Original-system guidance, not a battery-life promise for every current sensor. See the Original SimpliSafe “Sensor Not Responding” article.

What does “Device Connection Problem” mean?

SimpliSafe uses “Device Connection Problem” for a situation in which the mobile app cannot reach the Base Station. It does not, by itself, mean that a particular sensor has failed. The Base Station may be unable to reach Wi-Fi or its backup cellular connection, or the phone may have a poor signal. A VPN or firewall can also block app access.

  • Check the phone’s signal and whether the app can reach the Base Station when the phone is connected through a different available network.
  • Check the Base Station’s placement: SimpliSafe recommends at least three feet above the ground, on a non-dense surface, in open air rather than inside a cabinet or closet.
  • Keep the Base Station three to five feet from Wi-Fi routers, televisions, wireless weather stations, and larger appliances that emit radio-frequency interference.
  • If you use a VPN or firewall, check whether it is preventing the app from reaching the Base Station.

SimpliSafe’s app troubleshooting page lists cellular backup as plan-dependent. Because eligible plan names and terms can change, check the current service terms rather than relying on an older plan list. See SimpliSafe’s “Device Connection Problem” guidance.

Why sensor troubleshooting is different from camera Wi-Fi troubleshooting

SimpliSafe sensors communicate with the Base Station over a dedicated radio frequency, not common smart-home standards such as Z-Wave or Zigbee. SimpliSafe says its devices cannot be used with other systems. Camera connectivity varies by product: some camera products use Wi-Fi only, while others use both radio frequency and Wi-Fi. As a result, Wi-Fi troubleshooting for a camera should not automatically be applied to a sensor that fails to respond. See SimpliSafe’s explanation of how its products communicate.

Use the test result to choose the next step

What you observe What it suggests Next step
The Base Station does not announce the sensor in its usual location, but does announce it nearby. The sensor can communicate; range or interference at the installed location is a likely issue. Check placement and nearby interference, then retest at the intended location.
The Base Station still does not announce the sensor when it is nearby. Distance alone is less likely to explain the failure. Check the battery and the device-specific pairing or test instructions.
The Base Station announces an Entry Sensor, but opening the protected door or window does not register. The signal test succeeded, but the physical opening check did not. Check the sensor’s fit and alignment at the opening, then repeat the physical check.
The app shows “Device Connection Problem,” while sensors announce correctly in Test Mode. The app-to-Base-Station connection is the issue to investigate, rather than evidence of multiple failed sensors. Check the phone’s signal, Base Station connectivity and placement, and possible VPN or firewall interference.
The sensor will not pair even when close to the Base Station. Moving it closer has not resolved pairing. Follow the device-specific pairing steps; for an Entry Sensor, use the ordered procedure above.
