A web check can catch a malformed URL or redirect, but only an on-device test confirms the complete scan and app handoff.
What a QR code test needs to prove
A successful decode proves only that a scanner can read the symbol. A complete test checks five layers:

- Payload: The code contains the intended URL, text, or other supported data.
- Presentation: The complete code is visible and scannable where it is deployed.
- Destination: The URL and any redirects lead to the intended content.
- Handoff: The phone opens the expected browser or app screen.
- Safe handling: The user can inspect the destination, and the app handles unexpected or unsupported payloads appropriately.
QR codes can encode URLs or custom payloads, and a code displayed on a screen is a digital use case distinct from a printed code. The European Commission’s QR code Security Guide explains these distinctions. The current technical specification, ISO/IEC 18004:2024, covers QR symbology, encoding, dimensions, error correction, decoding, and production quality.

1. Write down the expected payload
Before scanning, record exactly what the code is intended to contain. For a URL, preserve the scheme, hostname, path, query parameters, and any campaign or state values. Decode the deployed code with a trusted scanner or the app’s test tooling, then compare the result character-for-character with that expectation.

2. Follow the whole URL path
Open the decoded URL and follow its redirects. Confirm that the final URL and page are intentional, including on the relevant device. A code can remain unchanged while its destination page moves; the U.S. Department of Energy warns that changing a page address can break an existing code unless the old address redirects. Keep URLs as short as practical, as its QR Code Standards and Best Practices advises.
3. Do not treat decoding as a safety check
A readable code can still point somewhere unexpected. Compare the destination with the stated purpose before opening it, and ensure your app safely rejects or handles unsupported payload types. Successful decoding does not certify that a destination is safe.

Scan the code in its real presentation
Test the deployed version, not just the source image. Check it on the webpage, app screen, email, slide, or print output where users will encounter it. If the QR code is on a phone screen, scan it with a second device; inspecting an image on the same phone does not test the scan journey.

- Make sure the entire code is visible and not clipped, covered, or obscured by surrounding design.
- Test at the expected viewing distance and screen size. There is no universal minimum screen size or scan distance established by the sources cited here.
- Use the default camera or scanner your audience is likely to use, plus the product’s in-app scanner if it has one.
- Record whether the scanner recognized the code, what payload or preview it showed, what action was taken, and which final page or screen opened.
On iPhone or iPad, Apple documents scanning with Camera or Code Scanner and then tapping the surfaced link in its QR code scanning instructions. For app developers, Apple’s VisionKit documentation describes recognizing QR codes in camera video and providing an action for the recognized data.

On Pixel phones, Google’s QR scanning instructions cover Camera and the Scan QR code control. If scanning fails, Google recommends ensuring the full code is visible, holding steady, improving the light, cleaning the lens, and moving closer while keeping the code in frame.
Verify app links separately from web links
A QR code may open a valid web fallback while failing to route into the installed app, or it may launch the app at the wrong screen. Test the relevant combinations for your product:

- App installed and not installed.
- Signed in and signed out, if login changes the destination.
- Relevant access restrictions or location conditions.
- Any expected web fallback, including the final URL and page.
Google’s Deep link validator guidance describes website and app checks but cautions that its preview may not accurately reflect app content, including when login or location restrictions apply. It recommends scanning the code on the user’s own device to confirm that the correct page opens in the app. For iOS, the validator checks websites; app configuration remains essential, including Apple App Site Association patterns that cover the link. The tool cannot validate custom schemes, and Google recommends standard Universal Links rather than third-party dynamic links as the primary landing page. A validator pass is not proof of the complete app journey.
Use a QR test checklist

QR codes on websites: check whether they are the right interaction
If someone views a QR code on the same device they would need to scan it with, the code can create unnecessary friction. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends using QR codes for printed materials, presentations, or in-person situations, and avoiding them on websites, social media, or email when a clickable hyperlink can serve the user directly. If the code is still needed, provide an accessible, clickable destination alongside it where appropriate.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Camera does not recognize the code: Ensure the full code is in frame, hold the phone steady, improve lighting, clean the lens, and adjust distance while keeping the code fully visible.
- Scanner recognizes it, but the URL is wrong: Compare the decoded payload with the expected URL, including query parameters. Check the redirect chain and update the code or add an intentional redirect.
- Web page opens instead of the app: Test on a device with the app installed and check the platform’s link configuration, including Universal Link and Apple App Site Association coverage for iOS. Do not rely on a validator preview alone.
- App opens to the wrong screen or shows an error: Test signed-in and signed-out states and relevant access or location conditions; verify the route and fallback behavior.
- Validator reports a pass but the app journey still fails: Scan the QR code on the target device and confirm the actual app screen. Google notes that previews may not reflect app content and that iOS app configuration is still required.
- Old printed codes stop working: Keep the old destination active or redirect it to the new page. A changed address without a redirect can break existing codes.
- Users cannot scan a code shown on their own device: Offer a clickable link as an alternative, especially on websites, email, and social media.
