Playwright’s iPhone profiles do not run tests on an actual iPhone. They simulate mobile browser settings. To execute Playwright tests in Safari on physical iOS devices, use a hosted device service; BrowserStack documents this workflow through Automate. For reliable coverage, combine fast emulation, a separate WebKit project, and focused real-device runs.
Choose the right kind of iOS coverage
| Method | What it verifies | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright iPhone device emulation | App behavior with selected mobile browser parameters | Fast, repeatable checks in the normal Playwright workflow | Simulated settings, not physical iPhone hardware. Playwright emulation documentation. |
| Playwright WebKit | Behavior in Playwright’s WebKit browser | Browser-engine coverage; macOS WebKit is closer to Safari for some cases such as video playback | May include changes ahead of released Safari and is not a real iOS Safari run. Playwright browser documentation. |
| Hosted real iOS Safari | Tests executed in Safari on physical iPhones or iPads | Direct device and OS coverage | Requires service credentials and attention to provider-specific capabilities. BrowserStack iOS Playwright documentation. |
| Locally owned iPhone | Hands-on manual Safari inspection | Useful for exploratory checks and reproducing reported behavior | Owning the handset does not itself provide a documented local Playwright connection; the automated route described here is hosted. BrowserStack iOS Playwright documentation. |
Use emulation for broad, quick feedback; use WebKit as an additional engine check; reserve hosted physical-device runs for critical flows and release checks. Choose the real-device matrix based on your audience, supported iOS versions, and known risk areas rather than trying every combination on every change.

Set up fast local coverage with an iPhone profile
Playwright device profiles apply properties such as user agent, viewport, screen dimensions, and touch support. They are useful for responsive layouts and mobile interactions, but they do not turn a desktop run into a physical-iPhone test. Playwright groups browser and device configurations into projects, which can be run together or selected individually. See Playwright test projects and emulation.
Example configuration
In playwright.config.ts, add a Mobile Safari project using an available iPhone profile:
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{
name: 'Mobile Safari emulation',
use: { ...devices['iPhone 13'] },
},
],
});
Run all configured projects with npx playwright test, or just this one with npx playwright test --project="Mobile Safari emulation". Profile names and project configuration are documented by Playwright; use a profile available in the Playwright version installed in your project.
Add WebKit as a separate check
Playwright’s WebKit is based on WebKit source builds, not Safari running on iOS. Playwright notes that its WebKit can contain changes before those changes reach Safari; on macOS it offers the closest Safari experience for some cases, including video playback. Treat it as useful engine coverage, not proof that the app works on a physical iPhone. See Playwright browser documentation.
After updating Playwright, install the browser binaries that match that Playwright version:

npx playwright install
This installs Playwright-supported browsers for local testing; it does not provision or connect an iOS device.
Run tests on real iOS Safari with BrowserStack Automate
BrowserStack documents a Playwright workflow for real iOS devices through Automate. Its current iOS Playwright page lists Node.js 16 or higher and Playwright 1.50.1 or later as prerequisites, along with a BrowserStack username and access key. The documented iOS SDK workflow supports Node.js; the page directs users of other language frameworks to its legacy workflow. Versions, device inventory, and supported capabilities can change, so confirm the current requirements in the official iOS setup documentation before adapting a CI pipeline.
Configure the target device
The BrowserStack quickstart uses a browserstack.yml configuration with a platform entry specifying browserName: safari, an iOS version, and a device name. Its examples include iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 14, and iPhone 12 Pro. Treat these as documented examples, not a guarantee that every device or OS combination remains available.

Keep BrowserStack credentials out of committed configuration files. Supply the username and access key through environment variables or your CI platform’s secret store, following the provider’s current instructions. Then run the sample test command shown in the current quickstart from the project environment. The exact config schema and command belong to that provider workflow, so use the linked documentation rather than copying an old config into a new project.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck service-specific capabilities before porting tests
BrowserStack’s iOS Playwright page lists playwrightLogs, consoleLogs, resolution, and geoLocation as unsupported capabilities. If your suite depends on one of them, check the current supported-command documentation and redesign or isolate that test before moving the whole suite.
Build a practical device matrix
- Keep broad responsive-layout and interaction checks in emulated mobile projects.
- Run WebKit checks separately when you want browser-engine coverage.
- Use hosted real iOS Safari runs for release-critical paths, platform-specific bugs, or representative device and OS combinations chosen for your audience.
- Record the device, iOS version, browser target, and service configuration for each real-device run so failures can be reproduced against the same target where it remains available.
This layered approach is a workflow recommendation based on the distinct test modes; it is not a performance benchmark. Compare methods by hardware fidelity, required device/OS combinations, CI fit, available debugging evidence, supported capabilities, and the service’s current cost model. The cited documentation does not establish pricing, so check the provider’s current terms directly.

Troubleshoot common mismatches
A test passed on the iPhone profile but fails on an iPhone
The profile is emulation, not physical hardware. Reproduce the critical path in hosted iOS Safari and compare the exact device and OS target with the local project’s assumptions.
WebKit passes but Safari behaves differently
Playwright WebKit may be ahead of released Safari and is not an iOS hardware run. Use it for engine coverage, then verify Safari-specific behavior on the real-device service.
The provider rejects the test setup or credentials
Check Node.js and Playwright versions against the current iOS quickstart, confirm the username and access key are available to the job environment, and verify that the YAML device and OS combination remains supported. Avoid committing secrets while debugging configuration.

A capability works locally but is unavailable in the hosted run
Check the provider’s current capability list. In particular, its iOS page identifies playwrightLogs, consoleLogs, resolution, and geoLocation as unsupported; remove those dependencies or use a supported alternative for that run.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean visual capture of a page rather than executing Playwright assertions on a physical iPhone, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns an image or PDF; it is not a substitute for running an app’s Playwright test suite on actual iOS hardware.
For the API request and its parameters, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents and MCP clients. - The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright test Safari on an actual iPhone?
Yes, through a hosted real-device service such as BrowserStack Automate; an iPhone device profile or local WebKit run alone is not an actual iPhone Safari session.
Can I automate Playwright directly on an iPhone I own?
The documented automated route covered here is BrowserStack’s hosted workflow. The cited documentation does not describe a native local connection for running Playwright tests on an owned iPhone.
