For a quick layout check, use Safari Responsive Design Mode on a Mac. To verify how a page actually looks and behaves in iPhone Safari or Chrome, open it in an iOS Simulator or on an iPhone and inspect it from Mac Safari. A desktop preview or automated device emulation can catch responsive issues, but neither proves what a particular iPhone browser will render.
Choose the right way to test
Start with the fastest method that can answer your question, then move to an iOS environment when the bug may depend on browser behavior, device UI, or interaction.

| Approach | Best for | What it can tell you | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safari Responsive Design Mode on Mac | Rapid layout and breakpoint exploration | How the page responds to chosen viewport widths, heights, and pixel ratios; it also works with Web Inspector. | It is a Mac preview, not a complete iOS browser context. Apple describes it as a way to test media queries and dynamic styles. |
| iOS Simulator | Checking iOS-specific behavior without a physical phone | Device-aware checks such as viewport-meta effects, text sizing, double-tap zoom, and Home Screen web apps. It is included with Xcode. WebKit also documents opening a Responsive Design Mode page in Simulator. | It does not settle behavior unique to a particular physical phone. |
| Physical iPhone, Safari | Verifying and debugging the actual Safari app context | Real-device rendering and interaction; Mac Safari can inspect the connected device’s open page. | Requires access to an iPhone and a Mac for the documented remote-inspection workflow. Apple documents inspection of connected devices and booted simulators. |
| Physical iPhone, Chrome | Verifying the Chrome app context on iPhone | The page open in iPhone Chrome can be inspected through Mac Safari Web Inspector, subject to the documented version requirements. | Google’s documented flow specifies iOS 16.4 or later and Chrome 115 or later; the instructions date to July 18, 2023. See Google’s Chrome-on-iOS remote-inspection instructions. |
| Playwright device emulation | Repeatable automated viewport checks | Configurable viewport, device scale factor, touch support, user agent, and related parameters. Playwright documents its device emulation options. | These are emulated settings, not proof of a physical iPhone screenshot. |
Start with a responsive baseline on Mac
- Open the page in Safari on macOS and enable Safari’s developer features if they are not already available.
- Open Responsive Design Mode from Safari’s Develop menu.
- Try the viewport widths and heights relevant to your users or bug report. Use typed dimensions where available instead of relying on one device preset.
- Vary the pixel ratio when checking high-density rendering, and watch for horizontal overflow, clipped navigation, awkward wrapping, or breakpoints that switch too early or late.
- Use Web Inspector to examine the DOM, styles, and console while reproducing the layout issue.
Apple’s documentation says Responsive Design Mode is intended to test media queries and dynamic styles; its Safari 17 feature write-up describes custom viewport dimensions and an option to open the page in Simulator. Treat the Mac preview as an efficient first pass, not a guarantee of pixel parity with iOS. Apple notes that Safari behavior is tuned to device contexts across iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS. Using a physical iPhone
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Safari > Advanced and enable Web Inspector.
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac. If prompted, trust the Mac on the phone.
- Open the target page in Safari on the iPhone.
- On the Mac, open Safari and choose Develop > [your iPhone] > [the page]. Select the device and page shown in the menu.
Web Inspector attaches to the page running in the phone’s Safari context. Connected devices and booted simulators can appear in Safari’s Develop menu, as described in Apple’s inspection guide.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Using iOS Simulator
When you do not have a physical phone available, use Simulator, which is included with Xcode. Open the page in the simulated device, then use Mac Safari’s Develop menu to inspect it. Apple specifically recommends Simulator or a real device for iOS experience checks, including viewport-meta effects, rendered text sizing, double-tap zoom, and Home Screen web apps. For a bug tied to a particular handset, iOS release, or real-world interaction, confirm it on that device when possible. WebKit’s Safari 17 feature article.
Inspect a page in iPhone Chrome
Google’s documented remote-inspection route uses Safari Web Inspector on the Mac to attach to Chrome’s page on iOS. The instructions were published and updated on July 18, 2023, and specify iOS 16.4 or later and Chrome 115 or later. If the menus or version behavior differ, check Google’s current guidance rather than assuming the 2023 requirements are still the latest.

- Select the page URL listed under the device to attach Web Inspector to that Chrome page.
This checks the page in the iPhone Chrome app; desktop Chrome’s device emulation is not the same test. Follow Google’s steps in Remote debug on iOS.
Make Safari and Chrome screenshots comparable
A useful comparison controls the page state as well as the screen dimensions. Record the following with each capture:

- iPhone model and iOS version.
- Browser name and version.
- Orientation and viewport or device dimensions, where available.
- Page URL and the exact state being tested, including scroll position.
- Whether the image shows the visible viewport or a longer page.
Keep the content stable before comparing: wait for fonts and images, use consistent test data, and account for consent prompts, animation, and timestamps that change between loads. These steps make differences easier to attribute; they do not guarantee identical pixels across browsers or iOS releases.
A screenshot is evidence of appearance, not a complete mobile test. Also check scrolling, zoom, forms with the keyboard open, orientation changes, and sticky or fixed elements while browser UI changes. The address bar, on-screen keyboard, and device-specific form controls can affect layout in ways a static viewport misses. Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation.
Automate repeatable checks with Playwright
For regression tests, fix the viewport and device scale factor and keep the test page’s data stable. Playwright can also configure touch support and user agent through device emulation, but label the resulting images as emulated. Use Simulator or a real phone for issues that may involve iOS browser UI, the keyboard, native form controls, or actual device characteristics. See Playwright’s emulation documentation.

Troubleshooting
- The iPhone does not appear under Develop: Confirm Web Inspector is enabled on the phone, reconnect and trust the Mac if prompted, and make sure the device is available. Apple says connected devices and booted simulators can appear in the menu. Apple’s inspection guide.
- The page appears in Safari Responsive Design Mode but differs on the phone: Check it in Simulator or on a physical iPhone. The Mac preview does not reproduce every device-specific iOS behavior.
- Chrome’s page is missing from the Develop menu: Recheck Chrome’s Web Inspector setting under Content Settings, relaunch Chrome, and confirm the phone and Chrome meet the versions stated in Google’s documented flow. Because those instructions date to 2023, check current Google guidance if the workflow still fails. Google’s instructions.
- The screenshots differ even at the same dimensions: Confirm orientation, browser version, page state, fonts, loaded images, scroll position, and dynamic content before treating the discrepancy as a rendering difference.
- A layout issue appears only when typing or scrolling: Reproduce it with the keyboard open or while browser chrome changes; a static screenshot may not capture the cause.
- An automated screenshot looks right but the iPhone does not: Treat the automated capture as an emulation result and verify in Simulator or on a device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chrome on iPhone use the same browser engine as Safari?
This guide covers how to inspect each app’s page on iPhone; it does not rely on an assumption about browser-engine implementation. Check current platform documentation for engine-specific questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I test iPhone Safari without owning an iPhone?
Yes. Apple’s iOS Simulator is included with Xcode and provides an iOS-specific check, though a physical phone may still be needed for device-specific issues.
