These runs emulate browser settings; they do not prove that a physical iPhone or Android handset was tested. For direct Android device checks, Playwright has a separate experimental API.
Choose the kind of mobile test you need
- Responsive layout and screenshot regression: Configure Playwright Test projects with device profiles, then capture screenshots or compare them with
toHaveScreenshot(). - Physical Android browser checks: Use Playwright’s experimental Android API to connect through ADB to an Android device or AVD.
- iPhone-like browser coverage: Use a WebKit project with a mobile profile for Mobile Safari emulation. The Playwright documentation cited here does not establish a corresponding direct physical-iPhone automation workflow.
Playwright describes its mobile support as native mobile emulation for Chrome on Android and Mobile Safari, but a desktop-hosted emulation run does not reproduce every characteristic of a handset. [Playwright installation guide]

Set up mobile projects
Install Playwright Test and its browser binaries using the installation instructions for your project. In the Playwright configuration, import the device registry and define projects. The example uses an iPhone profile; add an Android-like profile from the registry for the Playwright version installed in your project.
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{
name: 'mobile-safari',
use: { ...devices['iPhone 13'] },
},
{
name: 'mobile-chromium',
use: { ...devices['Pixel 7'] },
},
],
});
Device profile names can change as Playwright’s registry evolves. Check the registry for the installed release before relying on a particular model name. Profiles can set a user agent, screen size, viewport, touch capability and other context settings; projects let the same tests run with different configurations. You can override individual settings after spreading a profile:

use: {
...devices['iPhone 13'],

}
The profile’s isMobile setting controls whether the meta viewport tag is taken into account and touch events are enabled. Other configurable context behavior includes locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions and color scheme. [Playwright emulation guide] [Playwright projects]
Record a test with a device profile
For test recording, Playwright’s code generator accepts a device argument, for example:
npx playwright codegen --device="iPhone 13" https://example.com
This configures the recording browser with the selected device parameters; it does not itself create a visual comparison baseline. Confirm the profile name in the registry before using it. [Playwright test generator]

Capture and compare screenshots
Use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion after navigating to the page. On the first run, Playwright writes a reference image; later runs compare against it. Review and keep baseline images under version control so intentional UI changes can be evaluated rather than silently accepted.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual layout', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
When a change is intentional, use Playwright’s snapshot update workflow, then inspect the updated image files before accepting them. The documented comparison controls include maxDiffPixels and custom stylesheet filtering for dynamic or volatile elements; use them to handle known noise, not as a substitute for investigating unexplained differences. [Playwright visual comparisons]
Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: Checks the screen visible at the current scroll position.
- Element: Checks a component or other selected region.
- Full page: Captures the scrollable page, useful when content below the fold matters.
These scopes answer different review questions; a full-page image is not interchangeable with a viewport image. Playwright’s screenshot tooling documents CSS-pixel scale as the default and device-pixel scale as an option for higher-resolution output. [Playwright screenshot tools]
Keep visual results repeatable
Screenshot output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headed or headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment whenever possible. Before widening a threshold for a flaky diff, check for environment drift and changing page content. [Playwright visual comparisons]
- Keep the browser and Playwright versions consistent between baseline creation and test runs.
- Run comparisons in a consistent operating-system and execution mode.
- Identify timestamps, rotating content or other volatile regions before choosing stylesheet filtering or a pixel threshold.
- Review baseline updates in version control as image changes, not just as passing test output.
When to automate a real Android device
Playwright’s Android API is experimental and connects through an authenticated ADB daemon to Chrome for Android or Android WebView. The documented setup lists an Android device or AVD Emulator, Chrome 87 or newer, and enabling “Enable command line on non-rooted devices” in chrome://flags. Verify these version-sensitive requirements against the current documentation and your installed Playwright release. [Playwright Android API]
- Set up an Android device or AVD Emulator and an authenticated ADB daemon.
- Install or use Chrome 87 or newer on the Android target.
- In Chrome, open
chrome://flagsand enable “Enable command line on non-rooted devices.” - Connect through ADB and use Playwright’s Android API for the browser interactions and device screenshot workflow you need.
The API documentation notes that raw USB operation is not supported without ADB, the device must be awake for screenshots, and not all tests have been run against the device. Direct Android automation is therefore distinct from routine project-based mobile emulation. The documented Playwright browser support also spans Chromium, WebKit and Firefox on Windows, Linux and macOS; that does not make every browser, device and operating-system combination equivalent. If you need a screenshot without setting up Playwright, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers say the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
