Use two checks: call Mermaid’s parse API to catch invalid syntax, then compare a screenshot of the rendered diagram against an approved baseline. Syntax validation cannot catch an unwanted layout or styling change; a visual snapshot cannot explain a syntax error as clearly as parsing first. For diagrams shown inside a documentation site or app, test the actual browser page when its CSS, theme, viewport, or Mermaid initialization affects what readers see.
Choose what the visual test should cover
Start by deciding whether the regression target is a generated diagram file or the diagram as it appears in your product. Mermaid’s usage documentation describes browser rendering, while the Mermaid CLI renders source files and Markdown.

- Test a standalone artifact when your deliverable is an SVG, PNG, or PDF generated from Mermaid source. This isolates the renderer and its configuration.
- Test the browser page when production renders Mermaid in a browser or when page CSS, theme, fonts, viewport, or surrounding layout can change the visible result. This exercises more of the real presentation path.
These approaches answer different questions. A CLI snapshot can establish whether generated output changed; it does not necessarily test the complete production browser integration.

Validate Mermaid syntax before comparing images
Mermaid’s parse API checks whether a definition is valid without rendering a graph. A valid parse returns a diagram type; invalid syntax throws unless errors are suppressed. Use that result as an early test failure, before spending time diagnosing a screenshot diff. Parsing does not establish that a valid diagram looks right.

import mermaid from 'mermaid';
const source = `flowchart LR
A[Start] --> B[Finish]`;
try {
const diagramType = await mermaid.parse(source);
console.log(`Valid Mermaid diagram: ${diagramType}`);
} catch (error) {
console.error('Invalid Mermaid syntax:', error);
process.exitCode = 1;
}
Adapt module loading and test failure handling to your project’s Mermaid version and runner. The essential check is to call mermaid.parse on each definition you intend to validate.
Render a file with Mermaid CLI
For file-based tests, Mermaid CLI accepts Mermaid definitions and can emit SVG, PNG, or PDF. Its basic command is mmdc -i input.mmd -o output.svg. Choose an output format that matches the artifact your project cares about, and keep the Mermaid dependency and renderer configuration controlled so updates happen deliberately.

mmdc -i diagrams/architecture.mmd -o artifacts/architecture.svg
The CLI also supports theme and background options. It can process Markdown containing Mermaid blocks and create SVG files referenced by the transformed Markdown. Use this path when generated Markdown and its linked diagrams are the artifacts you need to validate; use a browser-page test if the production appearance depends on the site.
Compare the rendered browser output with Playwright
Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot() for screenshot assertions. The following integration-test sketch checks the diagram SVG on a documentation page. The URL, selector, and readiness conditions are illustrative: match them to your application’s route and Mermaid integration.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('architecture diagram stays visually stable', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/docs/architecture');
const diagram = page.locator('.mermaid svg');
await expect(diagram).toBeVisible();
await expect(diagram).toHaveScreenshot('architecture-diagram.png');
});
Ensure the SVG is present and stable before taking the screenshot. If your page renders asynchronously, wait for an application-specific readiness signal rather than assuming navigation alone means the diagram is finished.
Create and review the baseline
The first run creates a missing baseline. Inspect that image before committing it; it becomes the expected appearance for later runs. When a later test fails, review the screenshot diff to determine whether the change is a defect or an intentional design update. Update snapshots with Playwright’s --update-snapshots option only after approving the new output. The official Playwright snapshot guide describes baseline generation and updates.

Keep screenshots stable and choose a useful test matrix
Browser screenshots can differ with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends keeping baseline generation and comparison in the same environment where practical. Fix the viewport, browser project, fonts, and headless setting, and avoid capturing unrelated dynamic content. Playwright screenshot options can apply a stylesheet to filter volatile page elements.
| Test axis | Include it when |
|---|---|
| Theme | Your site or diagrams support light and dark modes, and users can see a difference. |
| Browser or operating system | Cross-browser or cross-platform rendering is a supported requirement. Keep separate baselines if output differs. |
| Viewport | Responsive layout, wrapping, clipping, or legibility may change with available space. |
| Font configuration | Your product supplies fonts or known font-loading differences affect diagram layout. |
This is a practical selection guide, not a requirement to test every combination. Choose cases that represent supported user experiences; an unnecessarily broad matrix adds maintenance without necessarily improving coverage.

Set screenshot-diff thresholds carefully
Playwright supports comparison options such as maxDiffPixels, and Playwright Test uses pixelmatch for image comparison. A tolerance can accommodate small rendering noise, but a permissive threshold can hide real changes. Base thresholds on observed and reviewed behavior, document why they exist, and keep reviewing changed baselines rather than using tolerance as a substitute for review.
Choose the right testing tool for the question
For screenshot APIs and services, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to try when you need to capture a rendered page: it removes known consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean screenshots are billed. For the Mermaid test itself, choose the tool whose output matches the behavior you need to protect.
- Mermaid parse API: fast syntax validation without rendering; it cannot verify appearance.
- Mermaid CLI: checks the generated SVG, PNG, PDF, or Markdown conversion route; it may not cover production browser integration.
- Playwright screenshot assertions: checks browser-visible output and supports snapshot review and pixel tolerance; it depends on a controlled comparison environment.
Mermaid’s project overview names Argos for pull-request visual regression testing and Applitools in its release process; the Mermaid CLI README also references Percy. These are examples of hosted visual-review workflows, not evidence that any one service is required or that current pricing or availability is established. Compare options by the render path tested, snapshot storage and review process, CI and browser support, configuration needs, and current vendor terms.
