How to Test Logout Flows in Cypress

A practical Cypress guide to testing real logout controls, endpoint behavior, session state, and provider logout scope.

To test a logout flow in Cypress, begin with a valid authenticated session, use the application’s real logout control, and verify the signed-out outcome your app promises. A UI test covers the user action; a cy.request() test can check the server endpoint and its cookie effects. Use both when you need confidence in both layers.

Choose what “logged out” means for your app

Before writing assertions, define the logout contract. It may include a redirect to a public route, signed-out navigation, loss of an authentication cookie, or rejection of a protected request. These are application-specific: Cypress does not prescribe a universal cookie name, storage key, logout URL, or redirect.

Also distinguish application logout from identity-provider logout. Clearing the app’s local session is not proof that a broader single sign-on session has ended. Auth0 describes logout behavior that can span applications, so test provider-wide behavior only when that is part of the configured contract: Auth0 logout documentation.

Start from a known authenticated state

If login itself is not the subject of the test, use cy.session() to cache and restore cookies, local storage, and session storage. Validate the session by visiting a protected route or checking an authenticated API response. If validation fails, Cypress reruns the setup function. See Cypress: cy.session().

// cypress/e2e/logout.cy.js
beforeEach(() => {
  cy.session('test-user', () => {
    cy.visit('/login')
    cy.get('[data-cy=email]').type('[email protected]')
    cy.get('[data-cy=password]').type(Cypress.env('testPassword'), { log: false })
    cy.get('[data-cy=login]').click()
    cy.location('pathname').should('eq', '/dashboard')
  }, {
    validate() {
      cy.request('/api/me').its('status').should('eq', 200)
    }
  })
})

Replace the example selectors, route, endpoint, and credentials with your application’s test configuration. Keep real credentials out of source control. The protected-route assertion in setup establishes the precondition; it does not test logout.

Test the actual logout control

For an end-to-end flow, visit an authenticated page, click the same control a user would, then assert the promised signed-out state. Cypress’s custom-command guidance includes checking that an authentication cookie no longer exists after UI logout: Cypress custom commands.

it('signs the user out from the dashboard', () => {
  cy.visit('/dashboard')
  cy.get('[data-cy=logout]').click()

  cy.location('pathname').should('eq', '/login')
  cy.get('[data-cy=login]').should('be.visible')
  cy.getCookie('app_session').should('be.null')
})

Use the cookie assertion only if the app actually uses that cookie and logout is expected to clear it. A redirect and visible login form alone may be insufficient if protected content remains accessible; add a protected-route or API check when that is part of the contract.

Test the logout endpoint with cy.request()

An API-assisted check is useful for verifying server-side logout behavior. Cypress documents that cy.request() shares the browser’s cookie jar, so a response that clears a cookie can affect the browser context. The API guide explains this pattern: Cypress network requests.

it('invalidates the session through the logout endpoint', () => {
  cy.visit('/dashboard')
  cy.request('POST', '/api/logout').its('status').should('be.oneOf', [200, 204])

  cy.getCookie('app_session').should('be.null')
  cy.request({
    url: '/api/me',
    failOnStatusCode: false
  }).its('status').should('eq', 401)
})

Adapt the method, endpoint, response statuses, and unauthenticated status to your server. This test checks the endpoint and subsequent session behavior; it does not click the logout control or exercise client-side transitions. Pair it with a UI test when those are in scope.

Understand what cy.session() does during logout tests

cy.session() is a login-state setup and reuse mechanism, not a logout command or logout assertion. With test isolation enabled, Cypress clears the page and session data during its session lifecycle; explicitly call cy.visit() after restoring a session when the test needs a loaded page. See the session command lifecycle and Cypress test isolation.

In particular, do not infer that a passing cached-session setup proves logout works. The logout test must perform the logout action or endpoint call and assert the resulting behavior.

Test identity-provider logout only when it is part of the contract

Provider-backed applications need a clear answer to whether logout should end only the app session or also the identity-provider session. Cypress’s Auth0 guide describes using a test tenant or test API and dedicated test user, configuring callback, web-origin, and logout URLs, and using UI or programmatic authentication with cy.session(): Cypress Auth0 authentication. Cypress also documents social authentication and Amazon Cognito patterns: social authentication and Amazon Cognito authentication.

Keep provider tests isolated to a non-production tenant and a dedicated test identity. Assert the expected return route and the provider state only to the extent your configuration makes that observable. A local cookie disappearing is evidence about the app session, not by itself about SSO across other applications.

Pick the test shape that matches the claim

Approach What it exercises Useful assertions What it does not establish
UI logout Logout control and client transitions Expected redirect, signed-out UI, relevant cookie cleared Provider-wide logout unless specifically tested
API logout Logout endpoint and server behavior Cookie cleared in browser context, protected API rejects session That the user-facing control works
Provider logout Configured application and identity-provider logout contract Expected callback/return route and provider state within configured scope Behavior beyond the provider and test configuration

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The test starts unauthenticated: make session setup validate a protected page or authenticated API, and confirm the test identity is active.
  • The page is blank or stale after restoring a session: with test isolation enabled, visit the route required by the test after cy.session().
  • The cookie assertion fails: confirm the app uses that cookie and that its logout contract clears it. Some apps invalidate a server-side session or use other storage instead.
  • The endpoint request returns an unexpected status: check the app’s actual logout method, CSRF requirements, route, and response contract; do not assume every endpoint returns the same success code.
  • The protected API still accepts requests: verify that the endpoint invalidates the server-side session and that the follow-up request uses the same browser cookie context.
  • Other SSO applications remain signed in: this may be expected for local-only logout. Confirm provider logout scope and configuration before asserting a cross-application outcome.

Version note

Cypress records that cy.session() became available by default in version 12.0.0, when experimentalSessionAndOrigin was removed: session command history. The examples above use the documented command patterns; check Cypress and identity-provider documentation for changes relevant to the version and configuration you run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use cy.request() to test logout?

Yes. It can call the logout endpoint and share browser cookies, which lets you assert endpoint effects. It does not exercise the UI logout control.

Does cy.session() log the user out?

No. It caches and restores session data for test setup; the test must perform logout and assert its outcome.
