Hyper-Threading can help gaming when a game or other active work can use its additional CPU execution capacity, but it does not guarantee higher FPS. The result depends on the game, processor, graphics card, settings and background tasks. It is most useful to evaluate it on your own system, especially if you stream or record while playing.
What Hyper-Threading does
Intel Hyper-Threading Technology is Intel’s implementation of simultaneous multithreading. On supported processors, it lets one physical core expose two execution contexts to the operating system. Intel describes it as a way for more than one thread to run on each core (Intel’s Hyper-Threading explanation).

Those contexts are not two physical cores, and they do not double a core’s performance. The potential benefit is better use of execution capacity that might otherwise be idle when one thread cannot keep the core fully occupied. Whether that helps depends on the work the processor has to do.

There is no generally applicable FPS increase established for Hyper-Threading itself. A processor comparison cannot isolate the feature unless other meaningful differences are controlled, so thread count alone is not a reliable way to predict gaming performance.

Some games rely heavily on single-thread performance and clock speed; others distribute more work across cores. Even a game with many threads may not gain from extra execution contexts if those threads do not help the work on its critical path. Thread scheduling and the overhead of coordinating work can also affect results. Intel discusses these constraints in its gaming-threading guidance and game development guide for 12th Gen Intel Core hybrid architecture, updated June 13, 2022.
When it is more likely to help
Gaming with streaming or recording
Broadcasting, recording and other background work compete with a game for CPU time. Extra execution capacity may help the processor handle that combined workload, but Intel presents this as a potential benefit, not a promise of higher game FPS. Test gaming alone and gaming with your usual streaming or recording setup; the two workloads may produce different results.

Games that can use the available CPU capacity
A game that distributes work effectively may benefit more than one that is limited by a single busy thread. The game’s thread count by itself does not settle the question: the organization of its work and how the processor schedules it matter too.

If the graphics card is already the limiting component, changing CPU threading may have little effect on frame rate. Intel recommends considering CPU and GPU benchmark results together and using a game’s own benchmark where available (how to read CPU benchmarks).

How to test it on your PC
Compare enabled and disabled settings only if your processor and firmware expose the option. Keep the test conditions consistent so you are measuring the setting rather than a change in the scene, graphics load or background activity.
- Choose a repeatable in-game benchmark or gameplay sequence. Use the same game, scene, resolution, graphics settings, GPU, drivers and background tasks for both runs.
- Record average FPS and, if your game or benchmark reports them, low-percentile performance. Repeat the tests to account for run-to-run variation; the cited guidance does not prescribe a fixed number of runs or a particular percentile threshold.
- Test gaming by itself, then repeat with streaming or recording only if that reflects how you use the PC. Keep those results separate.
- Compare the results, including whether any change is consistent across runs and whether it matters to your actual play. A small or inconsistent difference is not a dependable reason to change your setup.
Should you enable Hyper-Threading for gaming?
On supported Intel processors, Hyper-Threading is enabled by default according to Intel, and the setting can be changed in BIOS. Availability and labels vary by processor and firmware, so verify your exact CPU and motherboard documentation before looking for a switch or changing it. Do not assume every Intel processor has the feature or every BIOS offers the same control (Intel’s feature overview).

If it is enabled and your games perform well, there is no universal FPS reason to turn it off. If you suspect a problem, compare repeatable tests with the setting on and off rather than relying on a general rule. For a processor upgrade, first establish that the CPU is limiting your games, then compare performance in those games and at your resolution; also check motherboard and BIOS support, cooling and memory compatibility. Intel advises considering multi-core performance for multithreaded workloads and checking GPU benchmarks as well. More threads alone do not make a processor the better gaming choice.
