Use Playwright Test to render the HTML email preview in a browser, save a reviewed screenshot as the baseline, and compare later renders against it. Keep the browser environment and test inputs consistent, then inspect every diff: a passing browser screenshot test checks that browser rendering, not how Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, or another email client renders the message.
What a browser screenshot test can—and cannot—tell you
A screenshot comparison detects visual differences between a chosen browser rendering and a saved reference image. It is useful for catching changes to layout, spacing, typography, colors, and visible content in an email-like HTML page.

It is not an email-client compatibility test. The Playwright guidance discussed here covers browser screenshots, not native rendering in Gmail, Outlook desktop, Apple Mail, mobile email apps, or other mail software. A passing test therefore does not establish that those clients display the email identically.

1. Render the HTML your project actually produces
Serve the built email preview through your project’s usual development or test server, then navigate Playwright to that page. The important point is to test the actual generated HTML rather than an unrelated hand-written approximation. How your project compiles or serves email templates depends on its stack; Playwright’s screenshot documentation does not prescribe a template build process.

For a Playwright Test project, a minimal test can look like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('email preview matches its approved rendering', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:4173/email-preview');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('email-preview.png');
});
Replace the URL with the route served by your project. Run this from the project’s Playwright Test setup, with the relevant server available and the intended browser project selected.
2. Pin and record the rendering context
Use the same browser project and operating environment to create and compare screenshots. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. If you deliberately test multiple browser or platform combinations, expect to maintain references appropriate to those combinations rather than assuming one image is universal. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.

Also make the test inputs repeatable: use stable content and data, and ensure fonts and images are available before capture. Otherwise a missing font, late-loading asset, or changing text can look like a design regression even when the intended layout has not changed.

3. Create and review the baseline
On the first run, toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference screenshot. Treat that file as a proposed expected rendering, not an automatically approved truth: open it, check that the page is complete and correctly rendered, and commit it with the test only after review. Later test runs compare the capture with that stored expectation.
4. Capture the scope you want to protect
Use a page screenshot when the whole preview is relevant. If unrelated page chrome makes the test noisy, use a locator screenshot assertion for a stable email container or component instead. A smaller capture reduces the area that can change, but it also means changes outside that region will not be detected. Playwright’s PageAssertions API documentation describes screenshot assertion behavior and options.
Reduce noise without hiding real regressions
Disable motion that is not under test
Animations can produce different pixels across captures. Playwright’s screenshot assertion options include animation handling; disabling animations is appropriate when motion itself is not what the test is meant to verify. Keep animation enabled when its visual behavior is part of the requirement.

If a timestamp, rotating identifier, or other changing region is legitimately outside the test’s purpose, mask that region in the screenshot assertion or use a screenshot stylesheet to hide it. Prefer a narrowly scoped mask or stylesheet rule: broad filtering can conceal a real content or layout defect. The Playwright documentation covers masks and screenshot stylesheets.
Wait for the real page state
Ensure the preview has reached the state you intend to compare and that required fonts and images have loaded. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the latest capture with the expectation, which helps with settling visual output; it does not make unstable test data or unavailable assets deterministic.
Set pixel tolerances only after inspecting diffs
Playwright provides options including maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, and a color threshold. These settings allow some differences; they do not determine whether a difference is harmless. Start by examining the expected image, actual image, and diff. If repeated, understood rendering noise remains, choose a tolerance based on the observed noise and the changes you still need the test to catch. Overly generous tolerances can let meaningful visual regressions pass.
Review updates and keep the baseline trustworthy
When a design change is intended, update the expectation with:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the changed image in the same code review as the design change. Do not update snapshots merely to make a failing test green: first decide whether the actual rendering is expected. Keep the approved reference alongside its test so future reviewers can see what changed.

Choose the right test scope
- Whole preview: covers the complete browser-rendered page, but changes in unrelated page elements can require maintenance.
- Stable region: narrows the comparison to an email container or component, reducing unrelated noise while leaving out everything beyond that region.
- One pinned environment: keeps the reference set smaller and the comparison context consistent.
- Additional browser or platform projects: broaden the environments you exercise, but may require distinct baselines and review.
- Strict comparison: is more sensitive to pixel changes but can expose environment or timing noise.
- Configured tolerance: accommodates measured differences but can also hide changes if set too broadly.
These are coverage and maintenance trade-offs, not performance rankings. Choose based on which rendering changes matter for the email preview you are testing.

The first run fails because there is no expected screenshot
That is the baseline-creation step. Inspect the generated reference before accepting and committing it; confirm the route, content, fonts, and images are correct.
The same code differs between machines or runs
Align the browser project and operating environment used for baseline and comparison. Check browser version and settings, headless mode, hardware or power conditions, and whether different platforms are sharing an inappropriate reference. Stabilize changing data and asset availability before increasing tolerance.
A screenshot changes while the page is still settling
Check for animations, late-loading fonts or images, and content that changes on each load. Disable animation only if it is outside the test’s intent; mask or hide only legitimate volatile regions. The assertion’s wait for two consecutive matching captures helps with settling, but does not replace deterministic inputs.

The diff contains a small number of unexplained pixels
Open the expected, actual, and diff images and identify the source before changing thresholds. If the variation is understood and acceptable, use a measured tolerance such as maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, or threshold. Do not assume a pixel delta is a defect—or harmless—without visual review.
A passing test is not enough for email-client confidence
The test covers the selected browser rendering only. If the requirement is compatibility across mail clients, validate in those clients separately; the browser screenshot comparison described here does not establish that coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does `toHaveScreenshot()` work with Playwright Test?
Yes. Playwright Test provides the screenshot assertion used in the example; its PageAssertions documentation says the assertion was added in Playwright v1.23.
Does a browser screenshot comparison test how an email renders in Gmail or Outlook?
No. It compares the selected browser rendering with a reference image. It does not establish rendering behavior in native email clients.
