One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchStub the browser’s Notification API before your application code runs, then assert how the app responds to the permission result and whether it attempts to create a notification. This makes Cypress tests deterministic without relying on a live permission prompt or operating-system notification UI. It tests your application’s logic—not whether a browser or OS actually displays a notification.
What Cypress can—and cannot—prove
Use Cypress to verify application behavior: when a permission request occurs, what the app does for each permission result, whether it constructs a notification with the expected content, and what fallback it shows when notifications are unavailable. Cypress’s recipe index includes browser notifications as a testing scenario: Cypress recipes.
Keep native integration separate. Cypress launches a controlled browser instance, and its automation disables some browser behaviors and device-permission prompts to avoid interruptions in unattended tests. A stub-based test does not prove that a permission dialog appears or that the operating system displays a notification. Test those requirements manually or in a specialized real-browser environment matching your target browser and operating system. See Cypress browser-launch guidance.
Stub the API before the app loads
End-to-end tests
Install the stub in cy.visit()‘s onBeforeLoad callback. Cypress documents this timing for replacing built-in window methods: the callback runs before the application under test loads, so the app cannot initialize against the real method first.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This example assumes the application calls Notification.requestPermission() in response to the button and constructs a notification with the title shown. Change the selector, title, and assertions to match your app. If your application checks or uses other constructor arguments, assert those too. Cypress cy.stub() returns a Sinon stub and supports Sinon stub methods; see the Cypress stub API.
Some implementations access Notification as a constructor, others use its static requestPermission() method separately, and some wrap it in an application service. Stub the exact property your app calls. If stubbing the static method on the native constructor and then replacing the constructor does not fit your app’s access pattern, use a controlled replacement object or stub your app’s notification wrapper instead; assert against the API boundary the application actually uses.
Component tests
For a component test, install the stub before mounting the component. Cypress says stubs are reset and restored between tests, so create the test-specific stub before each mount rather than relying on state carried from another test.

Use the mount command and component syntax configured by your Cypress project. The important order is to stub first, then mount, because mounting runs the component code.

Test each permission result
Notification.requestPermission() returns a promise that resolves to granted, denied, or default. MDN notes that applications treat default as denial. Exercise every branch your application implements, including the denial/default fallback, rather than allowing a real browser prompt to choose the outcome. See MDN’s requestPermission() reference.
| Stubbed result | What to verify |
|---|---|
granted |
The app proceeds with its notification path, constructs the notification if that is its design, and presents any corresponding in-page state. |
denied |
The app does not try to create a notification and shows or follows the intended fallback. |
default |
The app handles the unresolved choice like denial rather than assuming permission was granted. |
For example, vary the stubbed promise result per test:

cy.stub(win.Notification, 'requestPermission')
.resolves('denied')
.as('requestPermission')
Then trigger the user action and assert the denial UI or other app behavior. Repeat with 'default'. Also assert request timing: the permission request should follow the user interaction intended to initiate notifications, not happen unexpectedly during page initialization.
Respect browser API requirements
Permission requests should be triggered by user interaction. The Notifications API is available only in secure contexts (HTTPS) in supporting browsers. A stubbed test checks your app’s logic, but it does not establish that a deployment’s origin, browser, or permission state permits native notifications. Include those conditions when verifying the real integration.

What to assert in a useful test
- Permission timing: the app asks only after the intended user action.
- Permission result branches: granted, denied, and default each lead to the expected behavior.
- Notification arguments: title and any relevant body or options match the application’s intended content.
- Fallback interface: users still receive an appropriate in-page response when permission is denied or unresolved.
- No unintended construction: denied/default flows do not attempt to create a notification if the app should suppress it.
Troubleshooting Cypress notification tests
The app still uses the real API
The stub may be installed too late. In an end-to-end test, move it into onBeforeLoad; in a component test, install it before cy.mount(). Also verify that the app uses the same window and API property you stubbed.
The permission method cannot be stubbed
Check the exact object and property used by the application. Code may reference window.Notification.requestPermission, an imported wrapper, or a property captured during module initialization. Stub the relevant method before that code initializes, or stub the app-owned wrapper at its boundary.
The notification assertion fails despite a granted result
Confirm the app awaits the permission promise and that the test triggers the correct user action. Check whether it constructs Notification directly or delegates to a service. Adjust the stub and assertion to match that implementation rather than assuming every app uses the same constructor path.

A test expects a native prompt or desktop notification
That expectation crosses the boundary of a deterministic app-level Cypress test. Cypress automation suppresses some device permission prompts; use stubs for app logic and a separate manual or specialized target-environment check for native display behavior.
