Test app localization in two passes: use platform pseudolocales early to expose missing strings, text expansion, truncation, and right-to-left layout problems; then test the real translated build in its target language and region on representative devices or emulators. Pseudolocales are useful diagnostics, not proof that translations are accurate or that every real translation will fit.
What app localization testing should cover
Localization testing checks both whether translated content conveys the intended meaning and whether the app remains legible and functional for a target language and locale. Include the interface, resource selection, locale-sensitive data, and important user flows—not just whether individual labels appear translated.
Start by listing supported language-and-region combinations and selecting high-value screens and flows: onboarding, account creation, navigation, forms, errors, notifications, checkout or subscription screens where relevant, and store-facing text. Note which screens show dates, times, currencies, numbers, addresses, calendars, or measurement units.
Run pseudolocale checks before translations are ready
A pseudolocale uses deliberately altered text or direction to make translation-related defects visible. Android describes it as “a locale that is designed to simulate characteristics of languages that cause UI, layout, and other translation-related problems when an app is translated.” These checks can reveal hardcoded strings, expansion and truncation, concatenated text, and incomplete right-to-left (RTL) handling.

Apple platforms
Use Xcode localization debugging to make nonlocalized interface strings stand out, including by displaying them in uppercase. Choose available pseudo-language configurations to stress doubled-length or bounded text, accents, emoji-like content, and RTL direction. Treat these runs as a way to locate likely problems before translation is complete. See Apple’s Preparing your interface for localization.
Android
Enable pseudolocales in developer-oriented builds and run both relevant variants: English (XA) stresses accents and text expansion, while AR (XB) simulates RTL direction. Inspect for hardcoded strings, clipping, broken concatenation, bidirectional text problems, and UI elements that fail to mirror appropriately. Android documents these cases in Test your app with pseudolocales.
Do not use a pseudo string’s expansion factor as a guarantee that a real translation will fit. A real translation may be longer or use different word order. Microsoft’s guidance also treats linguistic accuracy as a separate test dimension: a screen can render cleanly and still say the wrong thing. See How to perform localization testing.

Test actual translated builds in their target locales
Once translations are available, set the app and device or simulator to each selected language and region. Check that the intended translation loads, that missing or partially translated resources fall back appropriately, and that text remains readable at the screen sizes and densities you support. A preview is useful for quick checks, but confirm behavior in an emulator or on a device: display resolution and density affect layout. Android’s guidance is in Localize your app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn Apple platforms, test in Simulator or on a device using language and region settings that exercise the behavior you care about. For locale-sensitive formatting, choose a region that changes formatted data rather than assuming an English-region configuration will expose the issue. Apple’s archived guide, Testing Your Internationalized App, describes this principle.
Check meaning, formatting, and real user flows
Review linguistic intent
Ask a qualified reviewer to check the meaning and tone of translated labels, instructions, errors, and confirmation messages. Pay particular attention to ambiguous source text, placeholders, plural forms, and strings assembled from separate components. Joining fragments that make sense in English can produce incorrect word order or grammar in another language; prefer complete, translatable messages where the product allows it.

Exercise locale-dependent data
Run screens with representative dates, times, currencies, decimal and grouping separators, time zones, and measurement units. Check that both display and input behave as expected for the selected locale and region. Microsoft’s How to perform internationalization testing covers locale, time-zone, and unit considerations.
Inspect RTL and mixed-direction content
With RTL locales, check navigation direction, alignment, punctuation, numbers, and inline left-to-right content such as URLs, email addresses, or identifiers. Pseudo RTL is a useful first pass, but inspect an actual RTL translation too when one is available; pseudo direction cannot validate translated meaning or every mixed-direction case.
Complete important workflows
Go beyond static screens. Create an account, submit forms, trigger validation and error states, navigate between screens, and complete any relevant purchase or subscription flow. Confirm that translated labels do not change which control is activated and that status messages, notifications, and system-facing text remain understandable.

Capture evidence that developers and localizers can use
For each defect, record the app and build version, OS and device or emulator, language and region, reproduction steps, expected and observed behavior, and a screenshot. Classify the issue as linguistic, layout, resource/fallback, formatting, or functional so it reaches the right owner.
Apple’s localization screenshot workflow can capture UI-test screenshots and metadata mapping string identifiers to screen frames, giving localizers context for where text appears. See Creating screenshots of your app for localizers. A repeatable locale-and-device test plan helps compare fixes without relying on memory.
Choose the right test method for each question
| Method | Useful for | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Apple or Android pseudolocale | Early detection of missing externalized strings, expansion, clipping, and directionality problems. | Translation accuracy or whether every real translation fits. |
| IDE locale preview | Fast visual checks of localized layouts and RTL presentation during development. | Complete behavior across devices, OS versions, and real user flows. |
| Emulator or Simulator | Repeatable checks of actual localized builds and locale settings. | All physical display characteristics or device-specific behavior. |
| Representative physical devices | Confirming appearance and interaction on selected real screen sizes and densities. | Every device and OS configuration unless those are specifically tested. |
| Localization UI-test screenshots and frame metadata | Repeatable visual evidence and context for localizer handoff. | Linguistic correctness without human review. |
Troubleshoot common localization defects
- English text remains in a translated screen: Check for strings embedded in code, images, or UI components instead of localized resources; use platform localization debugging or pseudolocale runs to locate them.
- A label is clipped or pushes other controls: Inspect the actual translated string, constraints, wrapping, and supported screen sizes. A pseudo expansion pass can expose some cases but cannot predict every translation length.
- Words or punctuation appear in the wrong order: Check for concatenated fragments, incorrect direction settings, and mixed RTL/LTR content; test with an actual RTL translation when possible.
- Some strings revert to the default language: Verify that the expected locale resources exist and that default resources are included as fallback. Compare the configured app locale with the device language and region.
- Dates, numbers, or currency look unexpected: Confirm the device’s region and time-zone settings as well as language; test with values that distinguish the formatting conventions in question.
- A preview looks correct but the app does not: Reproduce the locale on an emulator or device and inspect the full flow; previews may not represent all device dimensions, densities, or runtime behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can pseudolocales replace testing real translations?
No. They expose classes of layout and directionality defects, but do not establish linguistic accuracy or guarantee that real translated strings fit.
Do I need to test both language and region settings?
Yes. Language selects localized content, while region can change dates, numbers, currencies, and other formatted data.
