Set the YouTube stream to Private or Unlisted before you start OBS. Then send the looping video from OBS, inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health, and let the clip reach its end so you can check the loop and audio. Keep the stream non-public throughout the rehearsal; change it to Public only when you are ready for viewers.
Choose Private or Unlisted before you connect OBS
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and select the Stream tab to start a stream now. For a scheduled broadcast, open Manage → Schedule Stream. Set visibility before starting the encoder, and verify it explicitly rather than relying on a default or a previous stream’s setting. YouTube says live streams can be Public, Private, or Unlisted; account defaults differ, with Private as the default for creators aged 13–17 and Public for creators 18 or older. YouTube’s live stream settings explain the available options.

Private: restrict the test audience
Choose Private when only you and specifically invited viewers should be able to watch. This is the better choice for checking a feed without making a shareable link the access mechanism. Invitation details in Studio can change, so check the current controls if you need another person to join.

Choose Unlisted if you want test viewers to open a link without making the stream public on your channel. Treat that link as shareable: anyone who receives it may pass it on. Use Private instead if you need tighter audience control.

Check that YouTube Live is available on your channel
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable Live well before the planned rehearsal. If the option is unavailable, check channel verification and restrictions rather than troubleshooting OBS first. Set up the looping video in OBS
- Open the scene you intend to use for the broadcast.
- Add a Media Source, browse to the video file on your computer, and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS repeats the file after playback completes. Refer to the OBS Media Sources guide if the controls are unfamiliar.
- If you need to loop several files as a playlist, use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for that source type to appear.
- Check the scene’s audio sources. Make sure the intended video audio is present and that desktop audio or a microphone is not being captured unintentionally. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers basic source and audio setup.
Connect OBS to YouTube without exposing your stream key
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the stream you selected. In OBS, open the stream settings and either select YouTube if it is offered or enter the URL and key in the corresponding fields. The key works like a password for sending the encoder feed to the right stream. Keep it private; do not show it in screenshots or share it. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube documents the key and reset controls in Manage live stream settings.

Start a private test and inspect YouTube’s incoming feed
- Confirm the selected stream still says Private or Unlisted in Studio.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check OBS’s local preview, but do not treat it as the full test: it does not show how YouTube is receiving the feed.
- In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube instructs creators to wait for preview and click Go live when ready. Keep visibility non-public during the rehearsal; the Go live action does not require you to make the stream Public.
- Look for stream health messages and verify that video and sound reach YouTube as intended. Check the actual watch or channel page, and a mobile device if those are relevant to your audience. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the real event and monitoring audio and video continuously.

Let the clip loop and check the broadcast settings
- Wait for the end: let the video finish and confirm that it starts again. A quick preview cannot confirm that the loop transition works.
- Listen at the join: check for silence, a click, an abrupt cut, or a gap when playback restarts.
- Check for unwanted audio: listen for desktop sounds or microphone input that should not be in the stream.
- Watch representative motion: still images or a short static preview may not reveal problems that appear during movement.
- Review stream health: respond to warnings in Live Control Room and confirm playback on the pages and devices that matter for your setup.
Match encoder quality to your upload connection
Test your sustained upload speed and leave bandwidth headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate right at the connection’s apparent limit. YouTube recommends about 20% room above the combined stream bitrate. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to use and the upload your connection can sustain. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among supported video codecs. Lower latency can increase buffering, which is usually less important for a non-interactive loop rehearsal.

See YouTube’s streaming tips for upload preparation and encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for technical guidance. If the stream buffers or health warnings appear, reduce the bitrate or resolution and test again rather than assuming a clean OBS preview means YouTube will receive a stable feed.
End the test and protect its archive
End the test from YouTube and stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you keep the recording, check the archive’s visibility as well as the live stream’s visibility; a private rehearsal can still leave a test video in your channel content. Before the production broadcast, open the intended stream in Studio and verify its privacy setting again. A successful test confirms only the media, configuration, and connection observed during that test; it cannot guarantee that a later public broadcast will be flawless.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not offer live streaming: verify the channel and check for live restrictions. If Live was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- No incoming preview appears: confirm OBS is streaming, check that the selected URL and key belong to the same YouTube stream, and inspect Studio for connection or stream-health messages. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The test is visible to more people than intended: stop and check visibility in Live Control Room. Private limits the audience to the creator and invited viewers; Unlisted access depends on the link, which can be shared.
- The video stops at the end instead of repeating: reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a multi-file playlist, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- Audio is missing, doubled, or includes room or desktop sound: inspect the active source and audio meters in OBS, then test the ending and restart transition again.
- Playback buffers or stream health is poor: confirm that upload capacity has headroom above the total bitrate, then lower bitrate or resolution and repeat the test.
- A test recording remains on the channel: find the automatically archived video and review its visibility or remove it if you do not want to retain it.
