Run the app directly from Xcode on your iPhone
This is the quickest route for a developer who wants to install, launch, and debug an in-progress app on a connected device. Apple’s Xcode instructions for running on simulated or physical devices cover pairing, run destinations, signing, and launching.

- Pair the iPhone with your Mac. Connect it by cable, or pair it wirelessly through Xcode’s Device Hub.
- Choose the app scheme and iPhone. Open the project in Xcode, select the scheme that includes your app target, then select the physical iPhone in the run-destination menu.
- Configure signing. In Signing & Capabilities, select a development team. With Automatically manage signing enabled, Xcode can register the device and create a development provisioning profile. You must sign in with an Apple account for the initial setup.
- Enable Developer Mode if prompted. Follow the iPhone’s prompt to allow locally installed apps.
- Build and launch. In Xcode, choose Product > Run. Xcode builds and installs the app, launches it on the iPhone, and opens a debugging session.
Use this route when you need to iterate quickly, inspect variables, or debug the app while it runs. It depends on having the Mac and signing setup used to build the app.
Choose how to share a pre-review build
For testers beyond the developer, choose a distribution method based on whether you need broad beta feedback or are sharing with a limited set of known devices.

Distribute with TestFlight
In App Store Connect, provide the beta app information and a feedback contact, upload the build, create tester groups, assign the build, and invite testers. You can collect feedback and monitor testing sessions and crashes. Apple’s current published limits are up to 100 internal testers and 10,000 external testers, and each TestFlight build is available for testing for up to 90 days. These are program limits published on Apple’s TestFlight overview; check the page for current limits when setting up a test.
TestFlight beta review is separate from App Review for the release version. Apple says a first build added to an external testing group is sent to App Review; later builds may not need a full review. When you are ready to release, submit the selected release build through App Store Connect’s App Store Connect workflow.

Distribute to registered devices
Apple documents distribution to registered devices as an option that does not require TestFlight beta review. You need to register the devices, archive and export the app, and provide the resulting package to the registered-device users. This suits a limited group whose devices you can identify in advance, rather than an open-ended tester pool. See Apple’s guide to distributing an app to registered devices.

What to test on the physical iPhone
A simulator is useful for debugging and checking configurations, but it does not reproduce every hardware feature or the performance of a physical iPhone. Apple recommends running on physical devices to verify that the app behaves as intended. A device test is still only evidence about that device and its conditions, not proof that the app works across every model and iOS version you support.

- Cover the supported range. Exercise critical flows on the oldest and newest supported device and OS combinations available to your team. Device models and operating-system versions can behave differently.
- Check install and update paths. Test a clean install, and test an upgrade if the app must preserve existing user data. Pay attention to data migrations, Keychain contents, and stored preferences such as defaults.
- Exercise hardware-dependent features on-device. Validate the physical features your app uses; a simulator cannot stand in for every hardware behavior.
- Try realistic operating conditions. Check behavior under relevant network availability and resource constraints, including memory and power. Apple’s release-build guidance also identifies IPv4 and IPv6 behavior as conditions to consider.
- Test the release build. Apple recommends testing release builds on actual devices. Its release-build testing guidance discusses migrations, stored state, resources, network conditions, and device and OS coverage. If the full compatibility matrix is impractical, narrow the combinations you support—for example, by raising the deployment target.
Testing is not App Review approval
Pre-submission testing helps find defects and gather feedback; it does not guarantee that App Review will approve the release. TestFlight may have its own beta-review step for external testing, while the release build goes through App Review when you submit it through App Store Connect.
