Test an admission form by capturing the same stages of the applicant journey under repeatable conditions, then compare those images across devices or releases. Include validation, uploads, review and confirmation—not just the landing page. Screenshots reveal visual defects, but they cannot prove that a form works with a keyboard or screen reader; test those separately.
Prepare a safe, repeatable test
Use a test environment where possible and synthetic applicant information. Before entering data, establish whether the portal has a test path and whether a payment or final submission could trigger a real transaction or application. Do not submit real applicant data simply to produce screenshots.

Record the browser and version, date, route, viewport dimensions, zoom level, and test values. Keep them consistent for each comparison. Note dynamic elements—such as timestamps or rotating notices—so expected changes are not mistaken for defects.

Map the applicant journey before capturing
Write down each state an applicant may reach. The exact sequence depends on the institution, so use its current admission instructions rather than assuming that another university’s process applies.

Government guidance for Indian government websites says basic filing instructions should appear at the start of a form, including mandatory fields and required uploads. It also calls for labeled inputs, text-based error explanations that say how to correct a problem, and contact details or another way to get help. See the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW); check the current university instructions for institution- and cycle-specific requirements.
Capture a baseline and compare like with like
- Open the target route in the recorded browser at the chosen viewport and zoom.
- Enter the same synthetic values and follow the same transitions each time.
- Capture the initial form and every mapped interaction state, including errors, uploads, review and completion.
- Repeat at the comparison viewport or on the newer release without changing the test data or sequence.
- Label each capture with its route, state, viewport, zoom, date and browser. Keep reproduction steps alongside the image.
Compare the same route and state across runs. Look for clipped or overlapping fields, labels that move or disappear, hard-to-read instructions, missing required-field cues, inconsistent spacing, content hidden at narrow widths, and changes to upload or error feedback. Check that text resizing and reflow keep relevant content usable.

For a desktop-versus-mobile comparison, use the same interaction state and check label placement, field alignment, error location, upload guidance, and confirmation feedback at both sizes. If comparing institutions, compare their own stated requirements, languages, upload rules, steps and support channels; differences are not automatically defects.

Check errors, instructions and completion feedback
Try an empty submission and deliberately invalid test values in the safe environment. Confirm that the relevant field is identifiable and that the error is explained in text, with usable correction guidance. Check that instructions identify mandatory fields and required documents before applicants need them.

Observe what happens after save, upload and submit actions. The page should provide visible feedback that distinguishes processing from a stalled state. Where a submission has legal or financial effect, check that applicants can review and correct information before finalizing it. These checks align with relevant WCAG 2.1 criteria cited in GIGW’s conformity matrix, including labels and error identification, keyboard operation and visible focus, structure and reading sequence, resizing, and contrast. GIGW gives a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text, subject to its stated exceptions. See the GIGW guidance.
Test keyboard and assistive technology separately
A screenshot can show where a focus indicator appears in a captured moment, but it cannot demonstrate that the entire form can be operated without a mouse or that assistive technology receives the right information.

- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Use Tab and the other relevant keyboard controls to traverse fields, option groups, upload controls and buttons in a logical order.
- Check that focus is visible and that reaching a submit control with Tab does not submit the form by itself or cause an unexpected context change.
- Use accessibility inspection and assistive technology to verify programmatic names, roles, states, properties and values, plus status updates after actions.
- Check that errors and changes are communicated in a way assistive technology can detect, not merely shown visually.
GIGW addresses keyboard focus order and programmatic control information in its accessibility guidance. Higher-education accessibility guidelines also recommend accessible admission materials, communication support, multiple form formats such as digital, large print and braille, sample filled forms, and WCAG-conforming online materials and tools. These are testing considerations, not a determination that a particular institution complies or fails.
Keep evidence useful and safe to share
For each issue, preserve the screenshot and record the route, viewport, field or state, reproduction steps, expected behavior, observed behavior and severity. Remove or mask personal information before sharing evidence. Use synthetic values from the start wherever possible.

Do not reuse an upload limit or other requirement from an old example or another institution. For instance, an admission instruction page can illustrate that limits may be specified, but only the target university’s current portal or admission instructions establish the applicable requirement for its current cycle.

For repeatable captures through an API, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in a GET request and can return an image or PDF. The following cURL example saves a WebP capture; add parameters for your chosen viewport or other capture needs as described in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Adapt the URL to the university test page. Use only a safe test route and synthetic data. ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
