Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion to capture an approved homepage baseline and compare later renders against it. Reliable diffs require the same browser, operating environment, viewport, and page state; otherwise, ordinary rendering or changing headlines can look like regressions. Review every proposed baseline and every failed diff rather than accepting image changes automatically.
Set up a visual regression test
Playwright Test creates a reference screenshot the first time an assertion runs, then compares subsequent screenshots with that reference. Start with a stable test URL supplied through an environment variable:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
const homepageUrl = process.env.HOMEPAGE_URL;
if (!homepageUrl) throw new Error('Set HOMEPAGE_URL before running this test');
await page.goto(homepageUrl);
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Install and configure Playwright Test for your project before running the test. On its first run, treat the generated image as a candidate, not an automatically approved truth: inspect it against the intended homepage state before committing it. Playwright recommends committing snapshot files with the test and reviewing snapshot changes. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
Choose the homepage states that matter
“Indian news website” does not define one universal layout. Build the test matrix from the publisher’s actual supported experiences and the ways those experiences alter layout.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Viewport: cover desktop and narrow mobile widths the site supports; add other widths where known responsive breakpoints or layout risks justify them.
- Language and edition: select the language or edition routes the product actually offers. Different scripts and headlines can change wrapping and module height.
- Content state: decide whether the test targets a fixed fixture, a test edition, or a production-like feed. Keep visible headlines, dates, images, and promotional modules stable where possible.
- Browser and platform: compare each rendering with a baseline generated using the same browser and platform. If multiple combinations are part of coverage, maintain separate baselines rather than treating unlike renderers as interchangeable.
Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. It recommends running tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated. Its snapshot naming also accounts for browser and platform because rendering and fonts can differ.
Inspect the visual contract
For each chosen state, decide which visible structure the test is meant to protect. Useful homepage checks include the masthead and navigation, lead-story region, headline wrapping, image crops, section order, and sticky or responsive behavior. These are practical targets for a news homepage, not a mandatory Playwright checklist.
Reduce noisy diffs without hiding defects
First stabilize the capture environment and the page state. If harmless rendering variation remains, Playwright offers maxDiffPixels to set an allowed pixel difference and a stylePath stylesheet that can filter volatile elements. The documentation’s threshold example is illustrative, not a universal recommended value.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- Start with a strict comparison and inspect the differences it reveals.
- Adjust tolerance only when you understand the source of harmless variation; choose a project-specific threshold rather than copying an example value blindly.
- If a page region must be excluded, keep the filter narrow and document why it is outside the visual contract.
- Do not mask an entire changing headline or content region merely to make tests pass: a broad exclusion can conceal a genuine layout failure.
A changing headline may be a content-state problem rather than a rendering bug. Make the test data and visible state repeatable where feasible, or define clearly which changing areas are intentionally outside the comparison.
Review failures and update baselines deliberately
- Capture a candidate reference in the environment selected for the test.
- Inspect the image and confirm it represents the expected page state before adding the snapshot to version control.
- Run later tests in the same configured environment against that approved reference.
- When an assertion fails, inspect the actual screenshot and diff. Determine whether the cause is an unintended layout change, changed test content, rendering drift, or an intentional redesign.
- For an approved redesign, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots, then review and commit the updated snapshots. Do not update baselines just to clear an unexplained failure.
Pair visual checks with functional and content checks
A pixel diff can show that an image changed; it cannot tell you whether links work, headlines are correct, content is current, or the page is accessible. Keep behavioral tests for interactions and navigation, and assert important homepage text separately when the content itself matters. Playwright also supports non-image snapshots for text and arbitrary binary values.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot diff tell me whether a homepage change is wrong?
No. It identifies visual differences; a person or additional test must determine whether a change is intentional, defective, or caused by a different page state.
Should I use the same baseline for desktop and mobile?
No. Capture and review separate baselines for the viewport and other rendering combinations you intend to support.
