Use Puppeteer to emulate a phone before loading your storefront, then test key shopping states at that viewport and capture screenshots alongside layout and network checks. This reveals issues in the tested browser configuration; it does not replace checking on physical phones. For an Indian checkout, test UPI or other payment steps only if the site offers them, and use an authorized sandbox rather than placing a live order.
Set up a mobile test that matches your storefront
Choose test devices and states based on the browsers and devices your store supports and the audience you need to serve. There is no universal device list for Indian ecommerce sites. Puppeteer’s official API documentation identifies Page.emulate() as a shortcut that applies device metrics and a user agent; it recommends doing this before navigation because sites may not expect a phone-sized viewport to be applied after loading. You can use a maintained profile from KnownDevices or define the viewport yourself. A narrow width alone is not full mobile emulation: set the CSS-pixel width and height, device scale factor, touch support, and mobile viewport behavior deliberately. Puppeteer’s defaults for hasTouch and isMobile are false. Its viewport documentation also notes that changing isMobile or hasTouch may reload a page. Install Puppeteer
In a Node.js project, install Puppeteer with npm:
npm install puppeteerThe package can download a compatible browser for its default setup. In environments where browser installation or execution is controlled separately, follow the installation and launch requirements for that environment.

Choose metrics when no device preset fits
Set a viewport in CSS pixels and choose the remaining properties to match the kind of browser behavior you want to exercise. For example:

});These values are an example configuration, not a claim that they represent every phone or the most-used device in India. If you change mobile or touch flags after the page has loaded, navigate again so the page responds to the intended configuration.
Run a repeatable capture and layout check
The script below applies a known device profile and a constrained network condition before navigation, waits for a storefront-specific product-grid selector, records failed requests, checks for horizontal overflow, and saves a full-page screenshot. Replace the staging URL and selector with values from your own site. Puppeteer’s relevant APIs are documented at Page.emulate(), Page.emulateNetworkConditions(), and Page.screenshot().

}This is a starting point, not a validated script for every Puppeteer release or storefront. Use a device name present in the installed version’s KnownDevices export. Add waits and assertions for your own page structure and shopping journey. For an individual component, obtain an element handle and use its screenshot() method rather than capturing the whole page.
Use a page-ready condition that fits your store
The example waits for domcontentloaded and then for a product-grid selector. This makes the readiness check explicit and tied to content the test needs. A generic network-idle wait can be brittle on pages with analytics, polling, or other continuing requests. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates waiting for networkidle2 in its example, but that does not mean it is the right readiness signal for every live commerce page. Test the shopping journey, not only the landing page
Capture and inspect meaningful storefront states, using test accounts and data where needed. A layout that works on the homepage may fail when product options, cart controls, or checkout panels appear.

- Category or listing: Check that product cards, filters, sort controls, and prices fit the viewport and remain usable while scrolling.
- Product detail: Inspect image galleries, variant selectors, quantity controls, price and delivery information, and the add-to-cart action.
- Cart: Check that quantities, removals, totals, and the next-step control are visible and reachable.
- Address and payment: If these steps are available in an authorized test environment, check form fields, validation messages, selected payment methods, and the return or status state.
For each state, look for horizontal overflow, clipped or obscured content, hard-to-read product or price details, controls that are awkward to tap, and sticky bars or dialogs that cover an action. These are recommended assertions for layout QA, not claims that a particular defect exists on your site.

Check more than portrait
Repeat relevant checks in landscape if the site supports it or your traffic and risk profile call for it. Compare the viewport width and height, touch and mobile flags, scale factor, network profile, journey state, and payment method actually offered. Use your own supported-device matrix to decide which combinations matter; a single emulated profile cannot establish compatibility across all physical devices.
Test slower connections and diagnose failed assets
Puppeteer provides predefined Slow 3G, Fast 3G, Slow 4G, and Fast 4G profiles through PredefinedNetworkConditions and Page.emulateNetworkConditions(). Repeat a representative journey with a relevant profile to see whether loading indicators, product content, and actions remain understandable as resources arrive. The documented limitation is that network-condition emulation does not affect WebSockets or WebRTC peer connections. See Page.emulateNetworkConditions().
When a screenshot shows missing or late content, attach request and response listeners before navigation to correlate network activity with the tested page state. The script’s requestfailed listener records failed requests; for a fuller trace, listen for request and response events as well. A failed request is diagnostic evidence to investigate, not by itself proof of a layout bug. See Puppeteer Page events.

Handle India-specific payment checks conditionally
Do not assume every Indian ecommerce site offers the same payment methods or checkout flow. If your storefront implements Google Pay’s UPI web integration, include its payment-selection and merchant return/status states in an authorized test. Google’s India web guide documents merchant and transaction details including a unique transaction reference, transaction URL, amount, and currency, and states that its documented web method supports INR. GST breakdown and invoice details are described as optional fields. Consult the current integration guide for your implementation: Google Pay India web overview.
Google’s setup instructions describe testing with Google Pay installed and Chrome for Android 60 or later for that integration. This is integration-specific guidance, not a recommendation to use an old Chrome version for general layout QA. Follow the current supported browser and device matrix for your storefront and payment provider. Avoid live charges: use a provider-approved sandbox or another explicitly authorized test flow. A browser response alone does not verify that an order settled; server-side payment verification is a separate concern. See Google Pay India integration checklist.
NPCI’s BHIM-UPI guidelines describe an App and Mobile Web flow with a prominent “Pay by any UPI app” option and describe intent as currently available for Android. That guidance is relevant when the site implements that kind of UPI intent flow; it is not a universal checkout requirement or a statement about every UPI provider. See NPCI BHIM-UPI guidelines.

Understand what the test proves—and what it does not
A Puppeteer screenshot records a rendered state for a particular browser configuration, URL, and moment. It can help compare changes and pinpoint visible layout issues, but emulation is not physical-device validation and does not prove that every handset, browser version, network, or payment path behaves the same way. Confirm high-risk flows on representative physical devices and through the payment provider’s authorized test process.
Common problems and fixes
- The page still looks like desktop: A narrow viewport alone may leave touch and mobile behavior disabled. Apply a device profile or explicitly set
isMobileandhasTouchbefore navigation. - The page changes or reloads after setup: Changing viewport mobile or touch properties after loading can reload the page. Set the complete emulation configuration before
goto(). - The selector wait times out: Check that the selector exists in the tested state and that the intended URL reached the expected page. Replace example selectors with stable selectors from your own storefront; do not wait for a product grid on a page that does not contain one.
- The screenshot omits late content: Wait for a site-specific readiness condition, such as a key selector or application state, before capturing. Do not assume network idle is suitable when requests continue in the background.
- There is horizontal overflow: Use the captured viewport and page widths to confirm it, then inspect the screenshot and relevant elements for fixed widths, wide media, or controls that extend beyond the viewport. The measurement flags overflow; it does not identify the responsible element automatically.
- A resource is missing: Inspect failed request URLs and, when needed, log request and response events. Distinguish a failed asset from a page that intentionally does not load it in the current state.
- Network throttling does not reproduce every delay: Puppeteer’s emulated network conditions do not affect WebSockets or WebRTC peer connections, so those channels need separate consideration.
- A payment test would charge a real customer: Stop and obtain a provider-approved sandbox or authorized test flow. Do not use a live payment path for visual QA.

No. It tests a configured browser rendering. Confirm important behavior on representative physical devices as well.
Should every Indian ecommerce checkout include a UPI intent test?
