Give the agent a test-only email route that cannot deliver to ordinary recipients. Use a captured inbox when you need to inspect the message it composed; use a provider simulator when you need to test sending outcomes or feedback events. Then check both the message and the workflow state: an API success response alone does not prove the agent chose the right recipient or completed the task.
Choose the test layer that matches what you need to verify
Email testing tools are not interchangeable. Some capture messages so you can inspect them; some accept or drop an API request without delivering mail; others simulate provider outcomes such as bounces. Decide which behavior the test needs to observe before choosing a setup.

| Test need | Suitable option | What it verifies—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect the message the agent composed | Mailtrap Email Sandbox | Captures messages for preview and inspection, including content, headers and attachments; documents bounce emulation. It does not establish live deliverability. |
| Check whether a transactional API request is formatted correctly | Brevo sandbox mode | With X-Sib-Sandbox: drop, Brevo returns a success response and message ID without sending or creating an email log. It validates request format, not delivery. |
| Exercise provider sending outcomes or feedback | Amazon SES mailbox simulator | Supports simulator addresses for success, bounce, automatic response, complaint and suppression-list behavior. Messages go through SES, but simulator behavior is not a general live-recipient test. |
| Experiment with integration or webhooks without reaching real recipients | Postmark sandbox mode | Supports safe integration, CI and webhook experimentation. Sandbox messages still count toward monthly sending volume. |
| Test an agent that must read an OTP or confirmation link | SMTP.dev test inbox | Documents a fresh address per run and API access to received mail; its sandbox outbound mail is limited to accounts inside the sandbox, according to the vendor. |
When message inspection matters
Mailtrap describes Email Sandbox as a fake SMTP server that captures messages instead of delivering them to real recipients. Its documentation covers HTML and text previews, headers, attachments, API and SDK access, and bounce emulation. Use its sandbox-specific credentials and endpoint rather than the live sending integration. See the Mailtrap Email Sandbox documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen request validation is enough
Brevo documents adding X-Sib-Sandbox: drop to a transactional email request. A success response and message ID mean the request was accepted at that testing layer; Brevo says sandbox mode only validates request format and does not send the email or create an email log. Do not interpret it as proof that a recipient would receive a message. See Brevo’s sandbox-mode documentation.

When provider events matter
Amazon SES’s mailbox simulator is for exercising defined simulator scenarios, including success, bounce, automatic response, complaint and suppression-list behavior. SES simulator messages are billed and subject to the maximum sending rate, but do not count against the daily sending quota or affect deliverability and reputation metrics. See Amazon SES documentation on sending test emails with the simulator.
Postmark’s sandbox mode supports integration and webhook experimentation while preventing delivery to real recipients, according to its documentation. Those messages still count toward monthly sending volume. See Postmark’s sandbox-mode documentation.

When the agent must receive mail
An outbound-only capture does not by itself test an agent that has to read a one-time code or follow a confirmation link. SMTP.dev documents a test domain with a catch-all inbox, fresh addresses per run and API access to received messages. The vendor says outbound mail from its sandbox only delivers to accounts inside the sandbox; treat that as the vendor’s description of its boundary, not as an independent audit. See SMTP.dev’s test inbox documentation.

Set up a safe, useful test
- Define the behavior under test. Separate message generation, recipient selection, API request formation, message capture, inbound OTP or link handling, and provider feedback or webhooks. A test that covers one of these does not automatically cover the others.
- Route test traffic to the sandbox. Use test-only credentials and the sandbox-specific host, endpoint, header or server mode documented by the provider. Mailtrap documents sandbox credentials and an API endpoint distinct from its live send endpoint; Brevo documents its sandbox header. Keep live credentials out of the agent’s test configuration.
- Constrain the test identity and destination. For workflows that receive mail, assign a test address to the run and match incoming messages to that address. SMTP.dev’s example generates a fresh address per run and filters received messages by recipient. This makes it easier to associate the OTP or link with the correct test rather than another run.
- Inspect the result and assert workflow state. Check the selected recipient, subject, body, links and attachments in the captured message when the chosen tool exposes them. Also assert relevant effects in the application—for example, whether the intended record or task changed state. Where supported, test failure branches such as bounce handling.
- Record the boundary of the test. State whether it captured content, checked request format, simulated a provider event or tested inbound reading. A passing result at one layer is not proof of live delivery or of behaviors the layer does not exercise.
- Check operational limits before repeated runs. Postmark sandbox messages count toward monthly sending volume. Amazon SES simulator messages are billed and remain subject to the maximum sending rate.
Interpret agent test results carefully
A successful tool call shows that the call completed at the tested interface. It does not show that the agent selected the right records, followed the task’s constraints or completed the intended workflow. Review the resulting message and application state, not only the provider response.

EmailBench, a 2026 preprint, evaluates a fixed synthetic corpus of 206 email and productivity scenarios across 16 task categories. Its best-performing evaluated configuration passed 33.5% of scenarios even though 99.7% of tool calls completed without an observed API failure. Those numbers describe that benchmark and its evaluated configuration; they are not a general reliability estimate for all email agents. See the EmailBench paper.
