How to Test an AI Shopping Assistant’s Checkout Flow Before Launch

Test an AI shopping assistant’s checkout across the UI, merchant APIs, order system, and PSP. Validate cart state, payment outcomes, retries, order events, user messages, and security before launch.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test checkout as one end-to-end transaction across the assistant, your merchant checkout and order systems, and your payment service provider (PSP). Before launch, prove that merchant-returned cart and order state stays authoritative, normal and failed payment outcomes map to the right user messages and order states, retries cannot create duplicate effects, and sensitive payment data is handled within your applicable security and PCI obligations.

What a production-ready checkout test must prove

A checkout session is more than what the assistant displays. The merchant system must create and update the session, return the authoritative cart and checkout state, and complete or reject the transaction. The assistant should present that state accurately; it should not claim an order succeeded before the merchant confirms it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For the OpenAI Agentic Checkout Spec, the documented flow begins with a merchant checkout session, applies updates as cart or fulfillment details change, publishes order lifecycle events, and completes checkout with order identifiers. The merchant processes payment through its existing PSP. If delegated payments are used, they still follow the applicable authorization and capture flow. Compare what the assistant shows with the complete cart state returned by the merchant, including items, prices, taxes and fees, shipping, discounts, totals, and status.

OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce key concepts describe the merchant as responsible for validating the order, determining fulfillment, calculating tax, assessing payment and risk signals, charging the payment method, and accepting or declining the order on its systems. Build tests around that division of responsibility: the assistant communicates the result; the merchant’s systems decide and record it.

Build an end-to-end test matrix

Use a sandbox and test each scenario through the assistant, merchant APIs, order system, and PSP. Adapt the cases to the capabilities of your protocol and payment integration; for example, pending authorization is relevant only where supported.

Area Scenarios and assertions Evidence to retain
Session start Create sessions with and without a shipping address. Check that the response includes a session ID, status, item lines, and required fields appropriate to each case. Request and response pair; session state trace.
Cart mutation Change quantity, items, discount, fulfillment address, and shipping choice. Check that the returned cart is complete and totals are recalculated. Before-and-after payloads; calculation assertions.
Customer-facing state Exercise valid, unavailable, invalid, and incomplete states. Check that the assistant presents accurate options, messages, and errors that match the API response and backend state. UI capture; matching API response and state.
Payment outcomes In the provider sandbox, cover successful authorization, decline, buyer cancellation, and pending authorization if supported. Check the resulting checkout and order states for each outcome. Sandbox configuration; provider result; checkout result; resulting order state.
Completion Complete an eligible checkout through the supported tokenized payment path. Check the completed state, final order object, and returned identifiers. Request and response logs; order record.
Order events Check that order-created and subsequent order-updated events are emitted and that their signatures validate. Webhook payloads; signature checks; event correlation IDs.
Retries and idempotency Repeat create and complete requests using the same idempotency key and check that safe duplicates return the same result. Reuse a key with different parameters and check conflict handling. Request logs; deduplication, order, and payment records.
Request security Validate HTTPS, request authentication and signatures, input validation, least-privilege credentials, safe retry handling, and omission or redaction of sensitive payment data in logs. Configuration evidence; negative tests; audit logs.
Compliance and resilience Review applicable PCI requirements with your PSP and a qualified security assessor; check access, incident response, and disable or rollback procedures. Repeat behavioral validation when the model, prompt, tools, or payment integration changes. Risk review; test run history; ownership and incident procedures.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol Production Readiness Guide recommends demonstrating each listed test end to end with request and response logs. Include checks for customer-facing legal and UX links, such as Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Run the tests in transaction order

  1. Start with a known cart. Create a checkout session, first without a shipping address and then with one. Record the session ID, status, item lines, and fields the assistant needs to show the current state. Check that missing information is represented as an incomplete state rather than silently treated as valid.
  2. Mutate one thing at a time. Test quantity and item changes, discounts, address changes, and shipping selection. Compare the complete returned cart before and after each change. Assert that displayed prices, taxes or fees, shipping, discounts, totals, and status agree with merchant state; do not rely on the assistant’s conversational summary as proof of a recalculation.
  3. Exercise valid and invalid paths. Cover available, unavailable, invalid, and incomplete conditions that your integration can return. For each, compare the API response, persisted backend state, and message or options shown in the assistant. An error is not handled correctly if the user sees a success-like message while the backend rejects the action.
  4. Submit completion through the supported payment path. Use a sandbox payment token or other supported tokenized path. Check the response, final order object, completed state, and order identifiers. If the merchant has not confirmed completion, the assistant must not represent the order as successful.
  5. Verify downstream events. Check that order-created and subsequent order-updated events reach the expected consumer, signatures validate, and correlation IDs let the team trace each event to its checkout request and resulting order.
  6. Preserve a trace for every run. Retain the request and response pair, state changes, provider outcome, user-visible result, and resulting order or payment record. Use these artifacts to show exactly where a mismatch occurred.

Test payment outcomes, not just the happy path

Configure sandbox cases for approval, decline, buyer cancellation, and pending authorization where the provider supports it. Amazon Pay’s developer documentation describes sandbox simulations for checkout outcomes; use your own PSP’s current sandbox documentation to confirm the scenarios and test inputs available to your integration. These are simulations, not proof that every production risk, authorization, or settlement condition has been reproduced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each outcome, assert the complete mapping across the provider result, checkout response, order state, and assistant message. A successful authorization is not by itself evidence that the merchant accepted and completed the order. A decline or cancellation should not leave an order recorded as completed; a pending result should not be described as a final success if the merchant has not confirmed completion.

USB-C PD port supports charging only and does not support data or video.

Also exercise retry behavior around payment and completion. A timeout or repeated request can occur even when one side has already processed the original request. With the same idempotency key, verify that repeating a create or complete request does not produce an additional order or payment side effect and returns the same result where specified. Then reuse the key with different parameters and verify the integration’s conflict behavior. Inspect the order and payment records, not only the response text.

Make the assistant’s messages match backend state

Checkout responses provide options, messages, and errors for the interface. Test what the user actually sees alongside the underlying state transition: capture the UI, retain the corresponding API response, and verify the backend record. Include unavailable items, incomplete details, invalid inputs, declined payment, cancellation, and any supported pending state.

Check that the assistant does not imply a price, fulfillment choice, or completion outcome that differs from merchant truth. If an update fails, the displayed cart and next-step options should reflect the returned state rather than a proposed change that was not accepted. Treat message accuracy as part of the transaction contract, not merely a copy review.

Protect payment data and credentials

PCI Security Standards Council guidance posted by Andrew Jamieson on 11 September 2025 states: “AI systems must be deployed and managed in compliance with applicable PCI SSC requirements.” The guidance calls for least-privilege access, warns against trusting AI systems with high-impact secrets or unprotected sensitive data, and emphasizes ongoing validation because AI can be nondeterministic and drift. Payment tokens or single-use PANs can limit exposure where appropriate; they do not remove the need to determine the merchant’s actual obligations.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol Production Readiness Guide says the Product Feed Spec and Agentic Checkout Spec are designed not to transmit cardholder data. However, forwarding data to a PSP or using a direct delegated-payment integration that handles cardholder data may affect PCI scope. Confirm your integration’s scope with the PSP and a qualified security assessor rather than assuming a protocol design settles the question.

  • Check that credentials and permissions are limited to the operations each component needs.
  • Verify HTTPS, request authentication, signatures, input validation, and the handling of retries.
  • Inspect logs and traces to ensure sensitive payment data is omitted or redacted.
  • Document who can access checkout and payment systems and how incidents are handled.

Set a launch gate and keep it current

Before release, require evidence for each applicable matrix row: reproducible sandbox configuration, request and response traces, expected state assertions, visible UI results, and the final order or payment record. Record unsupported provider states as not applicable rather than claiming they were tested. Have product, engineering, QA, security, and payments owners review the cases that fall within their responsibilities.

Keep a disable or rollback path available and assign ownership for incident response. Re-run behavioral validation when the model, prompt, tools, or payment integration changes; changing any of these can affect how the assistant invokes checkout or presents an outcome. Check the current protocol, PSP sandbox, partner eligibility, and security documentation before implementing against them, because versions and provider behavior can change.
