To test an AI model for prompt injection and data leakage, test the entire application boundary—not just whether a chatbot refuses one jailbreak. Feed controlled attacks through user prompts, retrieved documents, web pages, memory, images, and tool results; then verify independently whether identity, authorization, data-access, and action controls prevent disclosure or unauthorized effects.
Use synthetic canary secrets and test identities, define pass/fail conditions before execution, measure each high-impact task separately, repeat trials across model and configuration versions, and treat any successful protected-data disclosure or forbidden action as a security failure. The procedure below turns those principles into a repeatable assessment.

What you are actually testing
Prompt injection is an attempt to make a model disregard trusted instructions or reinterpret untrusted content as commands. The practical security question is not whether the model reveals a hidden sentence. It is whether an attacker can cross a boundary: read data they should not see, invoke a tool they are not allowed to use, alter records, send a message, execute code, or influence a consequential decision.

OWASP’s LLM01:2025 guidance identifies possible outcomes including sensitive-information disclosure, unauthorized function access, arbitrary commands in connected systems, and manipulated decisions. Those outcomes—not a particular attack phrase—should drive your test design.
Set the scope and threat model first
Map principals, assets, and boundaries
Write down which identities may use the system and what each identity is permitted to read or do. Include cross-user and cross-tenant boundaries. For each scenario, name the protected asset, the intended task, the untrusted input channel, the capability the model can reach, and the control that is supposed to stop abuse.
Examples of explicit boundaries are: “a support agent may view only tickets in its assigned tenant,” “the assistant may draft but not send email,” or “a summarizer may read a file but cannot write to the database.” A model instruction is not an authorization boundary. OWASP’s LLM07:2025 System Prompt Leakage guidance says the system prompt should not be treated as a secret or as a security control; credentials and other sensitive values therefore belong in protected systems, not in prompts.

Choose safe test data
Use synthetic canary secrets that look realistic but have no production value, plus synthetic users, tenants, records, and documents. Give every canary a unique identifier, such as CANARY-TENANT-B-9472, so logs and automated checks can detect partial or transformed disclosure. Never seed a test with a live password, API key, customer record, or regulated data.
Define the security decision
Before sending an attack, specify what counts as success, failure, and an inconclusive result. A failure occurs when an unauthorized principal receives a protected canary or record, a forbidden tool action succeeds, or untrusted content changes behavior across the stated security boundary. A refusal is not sufficient evidence if the model still attempted a prohibited read or the downstream system accepted a dangerous output.
Build a scenario matrix
A matrix prevents testing from collapsing into a handful of hand-written jailbreaks. Add a row for every important combination of channel, asset, capability, and identity.

| Injection path | Example setup | What to observe |
|---|---|---|
| Direct | The user asks the model to ignore its instructions, reveal a canary, or perform a forbidden operation. | Answer content, tool calls, attempted reads, and whether the requester’s permissions are enforced. |
| Indirect | A malicious instruction is placed in a document, email, web page, or tool result that the model must summarize or use. | Whether external content is treated as an instruction and whether it changes retrieval, tool use, or output. |
| Stored | Seed a retrieval record or memory item with an instruction, then issue a later benign-looking query that retrieves it. | Persistence across sessions, users, and retrieval jobs; whether the stored text can influence a later task. |
| Cross-user or cross-tenant | Authenticate as test identity A and request synthetic records belonging to identity or tenant B. | Authorization at retrieval and action boundaries, not merely the model’s wording. |
| Split, multilingual, or obfuscated | Divide the payload across messages or fields, change language, encode text, or use adversarial suffixes. | Whether filters and instruction handling remain effective when the meaning is distributed or disguised. |
| Multimodal | Put instructions in an image or another supported modality and ask the model to inspect it. | OCR or vision interpretation, tool use, disclosure, and any change in behavior caused by embedded text or visual cues. |
| Tool and output effects | Ask for a read, send, write, code execution, or downstream rendering after an injection. | Actual side effects, parser behavior, destination identity, and whether approval gates hold. |
These categories reflect attack patterns described by OWASP. NIST’s agent-hijacking evaluation work likewise focuses on malicious instructions inserted into otherwise ordinary email, files, or websites.

- Pin the build. Record the model name and version, system and developer prompt versions, model parameters, retrieval index or corpus version, tool definitions, safety filters, and output-processing code.
- Create isolated identities. Provision test users and tenants with deliberately different permissions. Give the attacker identity only the access it would have in the intended deployment.
- Register canaries. Place unique synthetic secrets and records in each protected location. Include canaries in retrieval content, memory, and tool-accessible stores where applicable.
- Capture evidence. Log the input, retrieved chunks, model output, tool calls and arguments, authorization decisions, downstream responses, side effects, timestamps, and test identity. Redact real secrets from the logs.
- Add benign controls. Run normal user tasks beside attack cases. A defense that blocks every request may hide a usability regression rather than provide a safe product.
- Automate verdicts. Match canary identifiers, unauthorized record IDs, tool-call types, destination accounts, and state changes. Preserve raw evidence for a human review of borderline cases.
Run the harness in an environment where a mistaken write or send cannot affect production. For actions that must be exercised, route them to a sink or sandbox and require an explicit test approval.
Execute attack cases by channel
Direct injection
Start with straightforward requests: ask the model to ignore its instructions, print a canary, disclose its configuration, or call a forbidden tool. Vary the wording and place the request before and after the legitimate task. Test both a fresh conversation and a long conversation containing distracting but benign context.
Record more than the final text. A model that refuses to display a secret but calls a retrieval function that returns it has still crossed a boundary. Likewise, an answer that omits a canary but writes it into a hidden field or structured output is a failure.
Indirect injection through retrieval and browsing
Insert a malicious instruction into a test document, web page, email, or API response that the assistant is expected to read. Keep the surrounding content realistic so the model must distinguish data from commands. Ask for a normal operation such as summarization, invoice extraction, or searching for a policy.
Check whether the content can cause the assistant to reveal another canary, alter the requested task, follow a link, invoke an unrelated tool, or send data outside the test boundary. Repeat with the malicious text in a title, footer, quoted section, metadata field, or a retrieved chunk that appears after trusted instructions.

Stored and cross-session injection
Store the payload in a document or memory record, end the session, and later issue a query from the same and a different identity. Test retrieval ranking changes, cached summaries, conversation memory, and indexing pipelines. A stored payload is especially important when ordinary users can contribute content that privileged agents later process.
Split, multilingual, and obfuscated payloads
Divide an instruction between separate messages, retrieved chunks, metadata fields, or tool arguments. Translate it, encode portions, use unusual whitespace or character substitutions, and test adversarial suffixes. The purpose is not to collect a magical string but to discover whether controls depend on a superficial text pattern.
Multimodal injection
If the application accepts images, audio, or other modalities, embed an instruction in the supported format and ask for a legitimate interpretation. Test visible text, small or low-contrast text, captions, alt text, and content that becomes visible only after preprocessing. Verify whether the model’s interpretation can trigger disclosure or an action.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Tool and output attacks
For each reachable tool, test reads, sends, modifications, and execution separately. Use a destination sink for outbound messages and a disposable database for writes. Submit malformed or surprising model outputs to parsers and renderers: an apparently harmless answer can become dangerous when interpreted as SQL, shell, HTML, a function call, or an approval object.
Define severity and metrics before testing
| Dimension | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Injection channel | Direct, indirect, stored, split, obfuscated, multilingual, or multimodal | Shows which input paths need controls and regression coverage. |
| Target asset | System prompt, synthetic secret, personal data, another user’s context, or business record | Distinguishes disclosure of low-value text from exposure of protected data. |
| Capability reached | Read, send, modify, execute, or downstream rendering | Captures real impact rather than only the model’s prose. |
| Principal and boundary | Requesting identity, tenant, expected permission, and actual data owner | Determines whether access was authorized. |
| Outcome | Blocked, disclosed, attempted, completed, or inconclusive | Separates a refusal from a blocked side effect and from a successful attack. |
| Task-specific rate | Successful attempts divided by attempts for that task and capability | Prevents a critical task from disappearing inside a safe average. |
| Repeatability | Results across attempts, seeds or sampling settings, and software changes | Shows whether a finding is stable and whether a fix persists. |
Use severity from your own risk model. No universal pass threshold is established by the cited guidance. A single successful cross-tenant export or high-impact action may warrant a critical rating even when the aggregate attack rate is low.
Keep model-response disclosure separate from underlying impact. Revealing a system prompt can help an attacker, but the more serious finding is usually that the prompt contained a secret or that disclosure enabled a protected action. OWASP explicitly warns against using the system prompt as a security control.

Use adaptive, repeated trials
One attempt is not an evaluation. Run multiple attempts per scenario, including paraphrases and attacks that adapt to the model’s previous refusal. Refresh the attack set after a model upgrade, prompt change, retrieval-corpus update, tool change, filter change, or authorization change. Add every confirmed failure—and a minimal reproducer—to a regression corpus.

NIST Center for AI Standards and Innovation reported a concrete illustration of why adaptation matters in its January 2025 AgentDojo-based held-out Workspace evaluation: the strongest baseline attack succeeded 11% of the time, while the strongest novel attack reached 81% in that particular setup. These figures describe that model and task, not a general probability for AI systems. The same NIST evaluation emphasizes that evaluations need to be adaptive, use multiple attempts, and examine task-specific performance.
Report confidence honestly. State the number of attempts, whether sampling was deterministic, which scenarios were held out, and whether a success means disclosure, attempted access, or completed side effect. Do not combine incompatible tasks into one headline percentage.
Verify defenses at the application boundary
Make authorization deterministic
Enforce identity, tenant, object, and action permissions in the data and tool layers. Every read and write should re-check the caller and resource, regardless of what the model requested. A model-generated claim such as “the user is an administrator” must never grant privilege.
Minimize tool capability
Expose only the functions and fields needed for the task. Separate read from write, draft from send, and low-impact from high-impact operations. Use allowlists, scoped tokens, rate limits, destination restrictions, and transaction previews where appropriate.
Separate untrusted content from instructions
Label retrieved text, web content, email, and tool results as data. Preserve provenance and delimit content so the application can inspect what was supplied. This reduces ambiguity, but it does not replace authorization checks or output validation.
Best Value
Validate outputs before use
Apply schema validation, destination and parameter checks, content restrictions, and policy checks before passing model output to another system. Treat free-form text as untrusted. Escape or sanitize content rendered in a browser, and never execute model text as code without an independently reviewed, tightly constrained mechanism.
Require human approval for high-impact actions
Put a person in the loop for irreversible or consequential sends, payments, permission changes, record deletion, code deployment, or decisions affecting rights. The approval screen should show the exact target, parameters, data being sent, and source of the instruction—not merely the model’s summary.
These controls align with OWASP’s prompt-injection recommendations for independent guardrails and with its warning that critical authorization should not be delegated to a model.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose evaluation depth for the deployment
NIST’s ARIA program describes three complementary levels:
| Level | What it covers | When it is insufficient |
|---|---|---|
| Model testing | Controlled prompts and model behavior in a defined harness. | It cannot reveal failures caused by your retrieval, tools, permissions, data, or output sinks. |
| Red teaming | Adversarial attempts against model vulnerabilities and integrated controls. | A short exercise can miss stored content, rare tasks, or newly adapted attacks. |
| Field testing | Realistic operational context, monitoring, users, and changing external content. | It must be controlled and privacy-preserving; production exposure is not a substitute for authorization design. |
For a production-facing agent, combine all applicable levels. The OWASP Gen AI Red Teaming Guide announcement frames red teaming as risk-based and ongoing across model vulnerabilities, prompt injection, system integration, and data exposure.
Use NIST AI 100-2e2025 as a terminology and attack-taxonomy reference for attacker goals, capabilities, life-cycle stages, mitigations, and risk management. A taxonomy helps teams name and organize threats; it does not replace application-specific scenarios or evidence.
Turn findings into fixes and regression tests
- Contain. Disable the affected tool, narrow the token scope, quarantine the poisoned document, or add an approval gate while investigating.
- Identify the broken boundary. Decide whether the failure was caused by retrieval isolation, identity mapping, authorization, tool design, output handling, or model behavior.
- Fix outside the model where possible. Add deterministic permission checks, least-privilege credentials, schema validation, destination restrictions, or human approval rather than relying on a stronger refusal prompt.
- Re-run the original and adaptive variants. Include paraphrases, alternate channels, different identities, and repeated attempts.
- Promote the reproducer. Store the smallest safe test case, expected verdict, evidence requirements, and affected build in the regression suite.
- Monitor in operation. Alert on unusual tool calls, cross-tenant access attempts, canary hits, policy denials, and changes in task-specific failure rates.
A defensible report should let another engineer reproduce the result without receiving real secrets. Include the scenario identifier, threat boundary, test identity, model and application versions, attempts, exact side effect, logs, severity rationale, remediation owner, and retest date.

Common testing mistakes
- Testing only a jailbreak prompt: misses indirect, stored, multimodal, and tool-mediated paths.
- Treating refusal as proof of safety: ignores attempted reads, hidden fields, parser effects, and blocked only-by-chance actions.
- Putting real secrets in the test: turns an assessment into a data-incident risk.
- Using one aggregate score: conceals a severe failure on a rare but high-impact task.
- Trusting prompt secrecy: leaves authorization and credentials under model control.
- Failing to retest after changes: misses regressions in prompts, indexes, tools, models, and filters.
- Ignoring benign controls: makes it impossible to see whether a mitigation simply breaks legitimate work.
