Amazon Bedrock’s console playground is a practical place to try supported foundation models, but it is only the first step. To move toward an application, check model access and regional availability, use the API for tasks the playground does not support, and test prompt caching with returned usage metrics. Caching can reduce latency and input-token costs for repeated eligible prompt prefixes; it is model- and API-dependent, and a cache hit is never guaranteed.
What can you learn in the Bedrock playground?
Bedrock’s console playground lets you send prompts to supported foundation models and inspect their responses without first building an application. It is useful for trying prompt wording, comparing outputs, and deciding which models merit further testing. AWS describes playgrounds as one way to experiment with models; the broader service also supports inference, model evaluation, knowledge bases, and agents. AWS playground documentation and the Bedrock model reference describe these workflows.

The playground is not a universal interface for every model or task. Custom models are not supported there, and embedding-model inference requires an API. If your goal is to generate embeddings or use a custom model, plan to move directly to the relevant API workflow.

How do you get started with Amazon Bedrock?
- Check model access and Region. In the AWS account and Region where you intend to work, review the selected model’s current access requirements. Many models are enabled by default when the account has the necessary AWS Marketplace permissions; some require additional account-level access or provider prerequisites. Availability and requirements are not identical across models. See AWS’s model access instructions.
- Open a supported model in a playground. Use the Bedrock console’s playgrounds to submit a representative prompt and inspect the response. The available models and controls depend on account, Region, and model support; do not assume every model appears in every account.
- Test representative tasks. Try the kinds of prompts, context lengths, and output formats your intended application will use. When comparing models, use consistent prompts and evaluate whether their responses suit the task rather than assuming one model is best for every use case.
- Move to an API when the task requires it. Applications, embedding inference, and unsupported playground workflows need API-based inference. Confirm the chosen model’s API and feature support before designing around it.
How do you compare Bedrock models?
There is no universally best model established by the available AWS guidance. Compare candidates against the job you need done and the constraints of your account:
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Task and modality: Does the model handle the input and output types your use case needs?
- Access and Region: Can your account use it in the AWS Region where the application will run?
- API and feature support: Does it support your inference path and features such as prompt caching?
- Observed output quality: Test representative prompts and judge results against your own requirements. AWS describes model evaluation as a way to compare outputs.
- Cost by usage type: Check the current rates for standard input and output, cached reads and writes where applicable, and any other relevant usage mode.
Amazon Bedrock prices vary by model, provider, modality, and pricing tier. AWS lists Standard, Flex, Priority, and Reserved tiers, and says selected foundation models are offered for batch inference at 50% lower prices than on-demand pricing. That published comparison applies to selected models, not to every model or workload. Check the current Bedrock pricing page for the specific model, Region, tier, and inference type you plan to use.
What does prompt caching do?
Prompt caching can reuse eligible portions of a prompt that recur across requests. For supported models and APIs, reuse may reduce response latency and the cost of processing repeated input tokens. It is most relevant when requests share a substantial, stable context, such as instructions or reference material, while varying a smaller part of the prompt.

Support, minimum prefix lengths, checkpoint limits, time-to-live (TTL), and billing rules vary by model and API. A prompt being long or repeated does not, on its own, establish that it is eligible. AWS’s prompt caching documentation explains the feature and its model-specific behavior.
What is the difference between implicit and explicit caching?
| Approach | How it works | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Implicit caching | Bedrock and the model automatically attempt to reuse eligible prompt prefixes. AWS describes this as best-effort; sending the same prompt again does not guarantee a cache hit. | Put stable instructions and context first, then place changing content later to improve the chance that requests share an identical prefix. |
| Explicit caching | The caller marks reusable portions with model-specific cache controls or checkpoints. Prefix requirements, checkpoint limits, and TTL depend on the model. | Keep marked prefixes static and follow the selected model’s documented requirements. Changes to a prefix can result in a cache miss. |
With either approach, eligibility is not proof that a request actually read from cache. Design for correct results without caching; treat any performance or cost improvement as something to verify, not assume.

How do you enable and verify caching?
In a supported console playground
- Select a model that supports prompt caching in the intended Region and playground workflow.
- Inspect the playground’s configuration menu. Caching may already be enabled; if not, turn it on if the control is available for that model.
- Review the displayed checkpoints and caching metrics. A checkpoint is created only when the cumulative prompt prefix meets that model’s minimum token requirement.
- Run requests that reuse the same stable prefix, then inspect the response usage information for cache-read and cache-write counts.
In an application or API workflow
Use the cache controls or checkpoints documented for the specific model and API. Preserve the reusable prefix exactly where required, and check the response usage fields for actual cache reads and writes. Do not infer a hit merely because caching is enabled or because requests look similar.
Cached reads are billed at the model’s cache-read rate. Cache writes may cost more than standard input tokens, so a workload that writes a cache but rarely reuses it may not save money. Assess the returned usage counts alongside the model’s current rates before treating caching as a cost reduction.

Will experimenting in the playground be free?
Do not assume so. AWS’s Free Tier terms depend on the account plan and eligible credits. Its Free Tier activity guidance explicitly says that using a foundation model in the Bedrock playground incurs service charges deducted from credits, and points users to Bedrock pricing. Review the applicable Free Tier information, the activity and credits terms, and Bedrock’s current prices before experimenting.

Where should you go after the first experiment?
Use the playground to narrow your choices, then validate the selected model and workflow in the environment you intend to run. If your requests reuse long context, test caching with realistic repeated prefixes and inspect actual usage counts. For prompts with variables and saved inference settings, Bedrock Prompt management can store prompt configurations; caching can be enabled there for supported models, and a checkpoint is created only when the total prefix satisfies the model’s minimum token requirement. See AWS’s instructions for creating a prompt with Prompt management.
