Test accessibility by completing your app’s real user workflows with platform inspection tools, automated checks, and assistive technologies on every supported operating system. A scan can catch some issues, but it cannot establish that people can understand and finish a task; include hands-on testing and, when feasible, feedback from people with disabilities.
1. Define what and where you will test
Start with tasks, not a list of widgets. For each screen, record the user’s goal and the steps needed to reach it. Include the flows that matter to your app, such as onboarding, login, forms, primary actions, errors, dialogs, notifications, and exit or recovery paths.

Record the app version and build, supported operating systems and device types, workflows in scope, and accessibility configurations. Choose representative device sizes and operating-system versions from the range you support. There is no single device-and-version matrix that fits every app; the point is to cover the supported experience rather than assume one simulator or phone represents it all.

Apple recommends listing main tasks for each screen and building a matrix of supported devices, accessibility settings, and assistive technologies. Use that matrix to make coverage visible and to identify which combinations are relevant to your app’s content and interaction model.

2. Run platform inspection and automated checks
iOS and other Apple platforms
Use Apple’s Accessibility Inspector to examine how the view hierarchy exposes interface elements and run its available audits. Apple’s documented audit checks include element descriptions, hit regions, contrast, element detection, and, on iOS-family platforms, clipped text at larger Dynamic Type sizes and accessibility traits. Apple also documents adding audits to UI tests with performAccessibilityAudit(for:).
Keep the boundary of those checks clear: Apple says that clearing all Accessibility Inspector audit issues does not guarantee a fully accessible app. An audit can flag detectable problems; it cannot tell you whether a spoken workflow makes sense or whether a user can complete the task.
Android
Use Android’s accessibility analysis tools together with automated UI tests. Current Android guidance discusses Compose testing APIs and the semantics tree. Android documentation is being refactored toward Compose; if your app uses Views, follow the Views-specific documentation linked from the current Android guidance rather than applying Compose instructions by assumption.

Android recommends combining manual testing, analysis tools, automation, and user testing. Report which checks were automated and which required a person, so a clean scan is not mistaken for complete coverage.

3. Complete the workflows with assistive technology
iOS: VoiceOver and related settings
Use a physical supported device for VoiceOver testing: Apple notes that VoiceOver is not available in Simulator. Turn VoiceOver on, then complete the same tasks from your test plan. Where it helps simulate nonvisual use, enable the screen curtain as well.
- Check that each element’s spoken label, role, value, and state explain its purpose.
- Move through the screen and confirm the reading order is logical and all required controls are reachable.
- Activate controls, enter and correct form data, and complete the whole task without relying on sight.
- Check that dialogs, validation errors, status changes, and changing content are announced when they matter.
Test other relevant settings and assistive technologies too: Voice Control, Switch Control, Dynamic Type, color and contrast settings, motion settings, captions, audio descriptions, and transcripts. Select based on your app’s interactions and media. For Voice Control, Apple cautions that spoken commands need to be tested in an environment where they can be heard clearly.
Android: TalkBack and related settings
Turn on TalkBack and repeat the planned tasks. Android describes linear navigation by swiping right or left, and touch exploration by dragging a finger over the screen. Confirm spoken feedback communicates each element’s purpose, every necessary element can be reached, the task can be completed, and alerts or temporary messages are spoken.
For workflows that must work without touch input, test Switch Access. Android describes using a “Next” action to move focus and a “Select” action to activate the focused control. Test Voice Access where spoken control is relevant. Also check text scaling, contrast, and media alternatives where applicable.

Check the task, not just the announcement
A control can have a label and still be confusing in context. Verify that users can understand what to do next, reach every action they need, recognize errors and changed states, and recover from a mistake. Check text size, contrast, target size, and media alternatives under the settings you included in scope. The outcome to record is whether the whole workflow is understandable and completable, not simply whether individual controls expose metadata.
4. Use WCAG as a framework, not a complete mobile test
W3C’s Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.2 to Mobile Applications (WCAG2Mobile) explains how WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA success criteria can be interpreted for native apps, mobile web apps, and hybrid apps with web components. It uses a screen or view as the evaluation unit in relevant cases.
W3C explicitly describes the note as informative, not normative, and says it is not sufficient by itself to ensure mobile app accessibility. Its mobile overview also says there is no separate W3C mobile accessibility guideline; mobile accessibility is addressed through existing guidance, including WCAG. Use WCAG to structure evaluation, while also testing platform-specific behaviors and complete workflows.

5. Involve users and track regressions
When feasible, invite people with disabilities to try representative tasks. Their experience can reveal barriers that an internal checklist or automated tool misses. Give participants a clear task and record barriers without assuming that one person’s experience represents every user.
For each issue, record reproducible steps, expected and actual behavior, platform and app build, assistive technology, and configuration. Fix the issue, repeat the affected workflow, and rerun relevant automated checks. Keep key audit checks in UI tests where practical so regressions are caught during development.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Diagnose common testing failures
- The audit is clean, but a workflow still fails. Automated checks cover only the issue types they can detect. Repeat the task with VoiceOver or TalkBack and review the sequence, changing states, error handling, and recovery path.
- A screen reader skips or misorders controls. Inspect the platform’s exposed element hierarchy and then verify navigation order on a device. Ensure the interaction sequence follows the task and required actions are reachable.
- An error or temporary update goes unnoticed. Trigger validation failures, dialogs, and status changes during manual testing; confirm relevant feedback is announced and users can continue or recover.
- Text becomes clipped when enlarged. Test at larger Dynamic Type or text scaling settings. On iOS-family platforms, Apple’s audit includes clipped text at larger Dynamic Type sizes; still verify that the full workflow remains usable.
- Voice Control commands are unreliable. Test in a quiet environment where commands can be spoken clearly, as Apple advises, and verify that the relevant controls can be operated by voice.
- Instructions do not match the app’s Android UI framework. Current Android guidance discusses Compose and is being refactored toward it. If the app uses Views, follow the Views-specific documentation linked from that page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does passing an accessibility scan prove a mobile app is accessible?
No. Automated audits only report issues within their coverage; manual assistive-technology and workflow testing are also needed.
Should I test both iOS and Android if my app ships on both?
Yes. Test each supported implementation and platform, because their accessibility behavior and testing tools differ.
Can I test VoiceOver in the iOS Simulator?
No. Apple notes that VoiceOver is not available in Simulator, so use a physical supported device.
