Set the browser’s landscape viewport to the dimensions of the iPad profile you want to support, then capture the viewport at a deliberately chosen pixel scale. For a repeatable automated check, Playwright can set that viewport and compare a screenshot with a baseline. For a quick manual preview, use Safari’s Responsive Design Mode. Neither a generic viewport nor a screenshot alone proves that a page behaves exactly like Safari on a physical iPad.
Choose the iPad landscape dimensions first
There is no single universal “iPad landscape resolution” for web testing. Decide which model or browser viewport you are targeting, and distinguish CSS pixels from the physical pixels in the resulting image. Playwright’s device descriptors include these landscape viewport examples:

| Playwright profile | Landscape viewport |
|---|---|
| iPad (gen 5) | 1024 × 768 CSS pixels |
| iPad Pro 11 | 1194 × 834 CSS pixels |
| iPad (gen 11) | 944 × 656 CSS pixels |
These values come from Playwright’s device descriptor source. Descriptor values can change; check the source that corresponds to the Playwright version installed in your project. The familiar 1024 × 768 size is a useful test target, not a stand-in for every iPad.

Also record the screenshot scale. Playwright’s scale: "css" produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; scale: "device" uses device-pixel dimensions and can produce a larger image on a high-DPI profile. Keep the scale consistent between the baseline and later captures, and include the profile, viewport dimensions, and scale in the test or artifact name.

Preview manually in Safari on macOS
- Open the page in Safari and focus the page.
- From the Develop menu, choose Enter Responsive Design Mode. The shortcut is Control-Command-R.
- Choose an appropriate iPad preset, or edit the width and height directly. Rotate the preview to landscape if needed.
- Inspect responsive layout changes and use Web Inspector to investigate problems while resizing.
- Capture the preview for visual review. If the result depends on real iPad Safari behavior, continue with Simulator or the target device.
Responsive Design Mode is useful for checking media queries and dynamic styles. Apple cautions that its presets are approximations: “Viewport size presets offer a good approximation, but they don’t represent exact layout, rendering, and behavior as experienced on an actual device.” Apple recommends opening the page with Simulator for a more accurate preview. Browser chrome, the on-screen keyboard, and device-specific form behavior can also affect what a user sees. See Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation.
Automate the screenshot check with Playwright
For a straightforward responsive breakpoint check, set the CSS viewport explicitly. This runnable TypeScript example uses Playwright Test, navigates to a page, and asserts against a screenshot:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('page at iPad landscape viewport', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1024, height: 768 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('page-ipad-landscape.png');
});
Install and configure @playwright/test in the project before running the test. Replace the example URL and dimensions with your own page and target profile. The viewport-setting and screenshot assertion APIs are documented in Playwright’s emulation guide and PageAssertions reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a device profile when dimensions are not enough
A viewport override checks the selected dimensions, but does not by itself model every device characteristic. Playwright device emulation can include parameters such as viewport, screen size, user agent, and touch support. Use a profile when those settings matter, and check the available profile names and values for your installed Playwright version. For a broader iPad-like check, select an appropriate profile and browser engine rather than treating width and height as a full device simulation.

Choose the screenshot scope and scale
- Viewport screenshot: use this when you want to compare what appears in the visible area, such as the first screen above the fold.
- Full-page screenshot: use this when the whole scrollable page matters. Playwright’s screenshot options are described in its Screenshots documentation.
- Pixel scale: use CSS scale for one output pixel per CSS pixel, or device scale when you specifically need device-pixel-sized output. Apply the same choice to the baseline and comparison capture.
Keep test data and dynamic interface elements stable when creating baselines. Playwright screenshot assertions support a configurable perceived-color difference threshold; choose a tolerance appropriate to the project instead of assuming every pixel variation is a regression. See the assertion options. A screenshot assertion checks the rendered capture against a baseline; it does not certify compatibility across all devices.
Which testing method fits?
| Method | Best for | What it represents | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safari Responsive Design Mode | Quick manual responsive-layout inspection | An adjustable viewport, orientation, and pixel-ratio preview | Apple says presets are approximate; exact device behavior can differ. |
| Playwright viewport setting | Repeatable automated checks at a chosen size | A browser page rendered at explicit viewport dimensions | Dimensions alone do not reproduce every device behavior. |
| Playwright device profile | Automated checks with a selected device configuration | Profile parameters such as viewport, screen, user agent, and touch | Profile data and browser behavior depend on the selected profile and version. |
| Simulator or an actual iPad | Checking platform- or browser-specific details | A more realistic iPad environment than a generic viewport preview | It is additional validation beyond a basic viewport screenshot. |
Troubleshoot mismatched or misleading screenshots
- The image is the wrong size: confirm whether you mean CSS viewport dimensions or output image pixels. Check the selected profile and screenshot scale; device scale can make the file larger than the CSS viewport.
- The layout does not match a particular iPad: verify that the dimensions correspond to the intended model, and use a device profile if its other emulated parameters matter. For Safari-specific rendering or device behavior, validate in Simulator or on the target iPad.
- The screenshot assertion changes between runs: stabilize page data and dynamic UI, confirm that the same viewport and screenshot scope are used, and review whether the configured color-difference tolerance fits the project.
- The screenshot omits content lower on the page: a viewport capture shows only the visible area. Use a full-page capture if the entire scrollable page is the comparison target.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 1024 × 768 screenshot mean the whole iPad image is 1024 × 768 pixels?
Not necessarily. That can describe the CSS viewport; output pixel dimensions depend on the screenshot scale.
