To reproduce a Safari 12 issue, test on the specific macOS Mojave and Safari 12 combination—not merely in a browser called Safari. Record both versions with your test results, then check the same user-visible behavior in an exact local or cloud environment. Safari Technology Preview is useful for exploring newer WebKit behavior, but it is not a substitute for Safari 12.
Define the legacy test target
First establish why you need this configuration: reproducing a customer report, protecting an explicitly supported legacy audience, or investigating a historical defect. Record the exact macOS and Safari versions, viewport, reproduction steps, and outcome. BrowserStack’s capability documentation identifies macOS Mojave with Safari 12.0 as a pairing, but a provider’s catalog can change; verify the exact configuration when you plan to test. Do not treat Safari Technology Preview as Safari 12. It is a separate app that can run alongside Safari and receives newer WebKit updates every few weeks. Use it to explore upcoming behavior, not to confirm a defect specific to an older release. Apple’s Safari Technology Preview page

| Route | Useful when | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Local Mac | You need hands-on reproduction, local debugging, or a test environment you control. | Confirm the Mac can run the target macOS and Safari versions. The available documentation does not establish a recommended Mac model; account for setup and maintenance. |
| BrowserStack | You want remote access to older Safari without maintaining a test machine. | BrowserStack advertises older Safari versions, including Safari 12.1, and documents Mojave with Safari 12.0. Confirm that the exact pair is selectable for your account and use case. |
| Sauce Labs | You need broader browser coverage or cloud live and automated sessions. | The product pages describe Safari testing, but do not establish availability of this exact Mojave/Safari 12 setup. Verify before choosing it for this target. Sauce Labs cross-browser testing |
| Safari Technology Preview | You want to investigate newer WebKit behavior. | It is an updated preview browser, not a fixed Safari 12 environment. |
For local testing, use a Mac installation that actually runs the target version. For cloud testing, inspect the current browser and OS selectors before building a suite around them. A general claim of Safari support—or support for some older Safari releases—does not by itself establish Mojave/Safari 12 availability.

Build a behavior-focused test plan
- Write down the exact case. Include macOS Mojave, Safari 12 and, if available, the precise release numbers shown by the system and browser. Note the viewport and whether the test is for a customer reproduction, supported legacy audience, or historical issue.
- Define observable outcomes. Cover the relevant user journey: navigation, form entry and validation, state changes, responsive layout, keyboard interaction, media, and the CSS or JavaScript behavior implicated by the defect. Keep assertions about what a visitor can observe rather than internal browser implementation.
- Run the same scenario in the target environment. Follow the recorded steps, capture failures and successful outcomes, and note any differences from the comparison browsers you support.
- Automate repeatable interactions. Use WebDriver where it fits stable workflows, then run the same behavior on other supported browser/OS configurations with their WebDriver-compliant drivers.
- Inspect manually as well. Review rendering and interactions that automated assertions do not fully describe. A screenshot can document appearance, but it does not prove that every interaction or workflow works.
- Keep the result reproducible. Save the browser and OS versions, viewport, test result, and reproduction steps with the issue or test report. Do not claim a test passed unless it was actually run on the recorded configuration.
Automate Safari with WebDriver
Apple supports Safari WebDriver automation through safaridriver. Apple’s documentation describes WebDriver as a cross-browser API for automating web-content interactions; its Safari resources include references for Safari 12 and later. Use the version-specific reference and the WebDriver client appropriate to your existing test setup rather than assuming every browser-specific option transfers unchanged. Use automation for stable actions such as loading a page, entering form data, submitting it, and checking the resulting visible state. Keep manual inspection for visual differences and complex workflows not captured by your assertions. A historical Safari Technology Preview release note reported a WebDriver hang on Mojave beta for that preview build; it is a release-specific note and should not be generalized to Safari 12. Use screenshots as visual evidence, not a compatibility verdict
Capture the same page and viewport in each environment when layout or rendering is part of the bug. Compare the relevant regions and keep the capture tied to its browser, OS, and viewport. Screenshots can expose spacing, font, overflow, and responsive-layout differences; they cannot establish that keyboard use, form validation, media playback, or other behavior works. Pair visual review with the behavior tests above.
Or skip the browser setup
For capturing a page without setting up browser automation, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a replacement for running Safari 12 on Mojave when reproducing a version-specific defect.

Troubleshooting and reliability checks
- The issue does not reproduce. Recheck that the environment is actually Mojave and Safari 12, not a newer Safari or Technology Preview. Match the reported viewport, steps, and relevant page state.
- The cloud session is unavailable. Recheck the provider’s live OS/browser selectors and account access. BrowserStack documents Mojave/Safari 12.0, but availability can change; Sauce Labs’ reviewed pages do not confirm this exact pairing.
- Automation does not start or interact as expected. Verify the Safari/WebDriver setup against Apple’s Safari 12-and-later references, then separate driver/setup failures from website failures by checking whether the same workflow works manually.
- A screenshot looks correct but the bug remains. Test the actual interaction or workflow. A static image is evidence of appearance only, not functional compatibility.
- Results differ between runs. Record the OS, browser, viewport, steps, and observed state for each run. Keep the test focused on observable behavior and investigate environmental differences before attributing a difference to the website.
Cost and maintenance considerations
A local Mac gives direct access to an environment you control, but requires compatible hardware, OS setup, and upkeep. Cloud testing can reduce that machine burden, but depends on the provider’s current inventory, account access, and the exact version pair being available. Check current pricing and availability directly with a provider before committing; the cited product information does not establish a comparable cost for this exact test configuration.
Treat Mojave and Safari 12 as a targeted legacy validation environment, not a general current compatibility baseline. Keep it in the test matrix when a support commitment or reproducible defect requires it, and use current supported browsers for the rest of your compatibility coverage.
