Authenticate in your Playwright test, confirm that the protected page has reached the intended state, and then call Happo’s screenshot helper on the relevant page or element. Happo documents capturing from Playwright tests, but not a universal login API or a guaranteed handoff for every cookie, storage, or SSO setup; confirm those details with Happo for your environment.
How the authenticated Happo flow works
Your browser test establishes the session and navigates to the protected route. Once the UI is ready, the test records a snapshot request with Happo’s Playwright integration. Happo says screenshot processing happens asynchronously outside the test run, so treat a successful test as confirmation that the test flow and snapshot request ran—not, by itself, proof that every remote-rendering arrangement preserves your authentication state.

Google’s Lighthouse documentation describes the general problem: its default runs start as a new user without previous session or storage data. Create or update your Happo configuration to use

Import the test function from
happo/playwrightin tests that request Happo screenshots. -
Run the Playwright suite through Happo’s wrapper:

Adapt the login steps, route, and selectors to your application. This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested recipe for a particular identity provider or app. Use a dedicated test account with least privilege and non-production data where possible; keep both app credentials and Happo credentials in your CI secret store.

});The assertion or wait before the screenshot matters: it prevents a redirect, loading screen, or failed login from being mistaken for the intended visual state. Choose a locator that represents the UI you actually want to compare, and give snapshots stable component and variant names so results are easy to identify.
Choose the snapshot boundary and browser coverage
Element isolation versus surrounding layout
Happo’s default hoist strategy renders a selected element in isolation. That can be useful for focused component comparisons, but styles that depend on ancestors or surrounding layout may change when isolated. Use snapshotStrategy: 'clip' when the selected element needs its on-page context preserved.
Browser and viewport targets
Define browser targets and dimensions in configuration, or specify a dynamic target for an individual screenshot as supported by the integration. The package README lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, iOS Safari, and iPad Safari targets; see Happo’s package README for current details. Cover the browser and viewport combinations that match your support commitments and the visual risks in this page; adding targets increases the combinations you need to review.

External assets and remote rendering
Happo’s Playwright guide says external assets may need to be publicly accessible to its workers unless configured for downloading. Check whether stylesheets, fonts, and images required by the protected page can be fetched in the remote snapshot stage. The guide does not establish a universal transfer mechanism for application cookies or browser storage, so do not assume that a local Playwright session automatically makes a private asset or authenticated route available to remote rendering.
Authentication, privacy, and asynchronous results
Happo records snapshot information during test execution and takes screenshots asynchronously outside the test run, according to its Playwright documentation. For unusual SSO flows or authentication that depends on a specific cookie or storage state, ask Happo whether your setup is supported before relying on it.
Happo’s security policy, last updated May 11, 2026, says screenshots and related repository or pull-request metadata—including git SHAs, commit messages, PR titles, commit authors, and links to internal systems—are confidential and access controlled per account. That policy does not explicitly describe how this integration handles application authentication tokens. Avoid sending sensitive customer content until you have confirmed the data path and access controls relevant to your account.

The capture shows the login screen
Make the test fail unless the authenticated page’s expected heading or another protected-content marker is visible before the screenshot call. Check redirects, credentials, and whether the test account is allowed to access the route. If the browser test sees the right content but the remote image does not, investigate the authentication handoff with Happo rather than assuming storage state is transferred.

No screenshot or report appears
Verify both Happo API credentials are present in the environment used by the test process and run the command with npx happo -- playwright test. Happo says the integration disables itself if it cannot detect the API tokens; inspect console output for [HAPPO] messages.
Styles or assets look wrong
If the capture targets a child element, try snapshotStrategy: 'clip' where styling depends on parent context. Also check that external CSS, fonts, and image URLs are reachable by Happo’s workers or are configured for downloading.
The page contains private data
Use a safe, dedicated account and non-production content. Happo’s security policy describes account-controlled access to screenshots and repository or PR metadata, but it does not specify the treatment of session tokens in this integration. Confirm that point with Happo before capturing sensitive content.
When Cypress is a better fit
If your project already uses Cypress, Happo also documents a Cypress integration and a wrapper for running cypress run. See Happo’s Cypress guide. Choose the runner your team already uses and can reliably authenticate with in CI; the reviewed documentation establishes support for both integrations, not a head-to-head cost or feature winner.

Does Happo provide a login API for protected pages?
The documented Playwright integration captures from a test; it does not describe a dedicated Happo login API. Use your application’s browser-test login flow and confirm any special authentication handoff with Happo.
Can I use a saved Playwright storage state with Happo?
The reviewed Happo documentation does not specify a universal cookie or storage-state handoff for asynchronous remote rendering. Confirm support for your authentication setup with Happo.
