To test a physical SIM card, confirm the phone supports that SIM, insert it safely, check whether the phone recognizes and registers it, then test voice, SMS, and mobile data separately. A phone detecting the card does not prove that the line is activated or that every service works. Exact trays, settings, SIM support, and carrier steps vary by phone model, regional version, and carrier.
Before you start: confirm the phone and line are ready
Write down the phone’s make and exact model, regional version if known, operating-system version, carrier, and the services the SIM plan is meant to provide. Confirm that this exact phone version has a physical SIM tray and supports the carrier’s service. Some phone models or regional versions do not have a physical SIM tray.

If the phone supports dual SIM, note which slot holds the card and which line is selected for calls and mobile data. Settings and menu names vary, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model rather than assuming a universal path. If you can, confirm with the carrier that the line is active and the SIM is provisioned for the phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInsert the SIM without damaging the tray or card
- If the phone or its manufacturer instructs you to power it down before opening the tray, do so.
- Use the phone’s designated tray-eject hole with a SIM eject tool or a straightened paper clip. Keep the tool in that hole; do not insert it into another opening.
- Place the card in the tray so its shape and orientation match the tray. The angled corner indicates the correct orientation on iPhone; other phones have model-specific instructions.
- Slide the tray back in fully. Do not force it if it resists.
- Turn the phone on and allow it time to detect the card and register with the network.
If the phone requests a SIM PIN, enter it only if you know the correct PIN. Apple warns that guessing incorrectly can permanently lock the SIM and interrupt calls and mobile data until you obtain a replacement. If you do not know the PIN, stop and ask the carrier for help.

Check detection and network registration
Look in the phone’s cellular or SIM settings and status area for the SIM or line and its network status. Record the exact message shown, such as “No SIM,” “SIM not provisioned,” or “No service.” Those messages are not interchangeable: one may point to card detection, another to provisioning, and another to network registration.
Some phones may automatically approve carrier services after a SIM is inserted. If the phone displays an error or carrier service does not work, contact the carrier; the exact activation and troubleshooting process depends on the provider and plan.
Test calls, texts, and data separately
Turn Wi-Fi off so it cannot mask a mobile-data problem. Test only the services the plan is supposed to include, and record each result independently.

- Product Purpose: Nano SIM card to Micro SIM card external expansion, easy to quickly change the card, test the card holder or external SIM card heat dissipation and so on
- Supported devices: Only devices where the sim card is placed in the same direction as the connector, which is more common in various cell phones, are supported
- Simple Installation: No driver required, just insert the card into the card holder and the other end into the device
- Includes: 2 SIM card extension cables, 1 card pin, 3 SIM card sleeves
- Note: This product does not include SIM card
- Voice: Place an outgoing call. If practical, also ask someone to call the SIM’s number and confirm that the phone rings.
- SMS: Send a standard text message to another phone and confirm that it arrives. A messaging app that uses internet data is not a substitute for testing SMS.
- Mobile data: Load a known web page or make a small data request over the cellular connection. Check that Wi-Fi remains off during the test.
Note the displayed network name and signal, along with any error messages. A test call after activation is also recommended in AT&T’s activation guidance. These are practical checks, not a universal certification test: plans may not include all three services, and the reviewed manufacturer and carrier guidance does not define a common pass threshold.
Diagnose the failure by what happened
The phone does not detect the SIM
Power down if instructed, remove the tray, check that the card is seated in the correct orientation, and reinsert it once without forcing the tray. If a known-good, compatible SIM is available, trying it in the same slot can help narrow down whether the issue follows the card or stays with the phone or tray. This is a troubleshooting comparison, not a definitive diagnosis; a carrier or repair provider may need to inspect the device or SIM.
The SIM is detected, but there is no service
Ask the carrier to confirm that the line is active and that the SIM is provisioned for this phone. If the phone is dual-SIM, verify that you are checking the intended slot and line. The phone’s manufacturer and carrier can advise on model- and network-specific compatibility or activation issues.

Calls or SMS do not work
Confirm with the carrier that the plan and line are active and include the service you are testing. On a dual-SIM phone, check which line is selected for calls or messages. Do not assume there is a universal activation code or settings path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Calls work, but mobile data does not
Confirm that cellular data is enabled, that the plan includes data, and that the intended line is selected for data on a dual-SIM phone. Follow the carrier’s prescribed network configuration, including APN settings where applicable. T-Mobile identifies APN settings as a possible step for a bring-your-own-device data problem; settings should come from the relevant carrier rather than a guessed value.
The phone asks for a SIM PIN or PUK
Stop rather than guessing. Contact the carrier for the correct PIN or recovery procedure. Incorrect PIN attempts can lock a SIM, and repeated guesses may make the situation worse.

Keep a useful test record
For troubleshooting or comparing phones, record:
- Date and location of the test.
- Phone make, exact model, regional version if known, and operating-system version.
- Carrier, plan, SIM size or type, and the slot tested.
- Whether the phone detected the SIM and registered on a network.
- Separate results for outgoing and incoming calls, SMS, and mobile data.
- Signal and network name, exact error text, and any settings changed.
There are no universal quantitative pass/fail criteria established for this consumer procedure. If results need to be comparable, define the expected services and thresholds before testing, and use the same test conditions for each device.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a SIM-card tester. It cannot tell whether a phone detects a SIM or whether a carrier line works. If you also need to capture web pages for a development workflow, one GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the capture; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers say which page verdict and billing result applied.
- Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does “No service” mean the phone cannot read the SIM?
No. The phone may recognize the card but fail to register on the network. Check the exact status and ask the carrier to verify activation and provisioning.
Can I test a SIM without making a call?
You can check detection and test any included messaging or data services, but that will not establish that voice calling works. Test each service your plan is expected to provide.
