Then, if needed, compare the result by using the motherboard’s built-in power button or briefly bridging the exact power-switch pins identified in that motherboard’s manual. If the motherboard responds to the comparison but not the case button, the case switch or its wiring is the likely problem. If it does not respond, the test has not identified whether the cause is the power supply, motherboard, or another connection.
First determine whether the PC has no power, no display, or no boot
These symptoms point to different troubleshooting paths. AMD distinguishes a system that shows no power from one that powers on without displaying an image, and from one that starts but does not boot. Watch for fan movement, lights, and other signs of activity when you press the button.

- No power: no apparent lights or fan movement. Continue with the external-power and switch checks below.
- No display: fans or lights run, but there is no image. The PC has responded to the power request; investigate display or POST problems rather than assuming the case button failed.
- No boot: the system shows activity but does not complete startup. Treat this as a boot problem, separate from whether the button can send the power request.

Check external power before testing the button
Confirm that the outlet works, the power cable is firmly connected, and the switch on the back of the power supply is set to on. AMD recommends checking the power source with another electrical device and confirming the PSU switch and connection. These checks can rule out simple causes, but they do not establish that the power supply itself is healthy.

Find the correct power-switch pins for your motherboard
The case’s power-switch lead connects to a system-panel or front-panel header on the motherboard. The two power-switch pins and their labels vary by board, so use the manual for the exact motherboard installed in the PC. Do not use a pinout from another model or guess from a generic diagram.
Look in the manual for the system-panel/front-panel connector diagram and the pair marked for the power switch, often labeled PWR_SW. Intel notes that these labels can be difficult to see on the board. MSI’s guidance refers to its own header as JFP1; that label is specific to its documentation and should not be assumed for other boards.

Inspect the case switch lead
Shut the PC down and unplug it before handling the front-panel connectors. Check that the case’s power-switch plug is seated on the correct two pins and that the wire and connector show no obvious damage. A plug placed on the wrong pins can prevent the chassis button from working; AMD includes front-panel connector placement among its troubleshooting checks.
Choose a test based on what you want to isolate

Test the disconnected case switch with a multimeter
- Shut down the PC and unplug it from the power source.
- Locate the case power-switch connector on the motherboard’s front-panel header, using the motherboard manual, and unplug it.
- Set the multimeter to continuity mode and place one probe on each of the two switch-lead contacts.
- Press the case power button and observe the meter. Continuity should register while the button is pressed.
The continuity procedure is described in LCSC’s guide to checking continuity with a multimeter. If continuity does not register when the button is pressed, the fault is in the switch or its lead; this test alone cannot separate those two causes. A continuity result does not test the motherboard.

Compare with the motherboard’s power input
If your motherboard has a built-in power button, use it as a comparison. Otherwise, a brief bypass check is an option only when you have positively identified the exact PWR_SW pair in the manual and removed the case plug. Intel and MSI describe using the identified power-switch pins to check motherboard response. Do not bridge neighboring pins or rely on another board’s layout.
If the PC starts from the motherboard button or the correctly identified header pair but not from the case button, the case switch or its wiring is implicated. If it still does not start, the result does not diagnose the PSU or motherboard; continue with power and internal-connection checks instead.

What the power button does—and what a successful test proves
The PWR_SW connection is the motherboard’s input for the system power button. The ASUS PRIME B460-PLUS User Manual says, “This header is for the system power button.” That manual also describes model-specific behavior: pressing the switch can turn the system on or request sleep or soft-off depending on operating-system settings, while holding it for more than four seconds while the system is on turns it off. Those details apply to that board and should not be generalized to every motherboard.

It does not prove that every component is working. If fans or lights start but the display remains blank, follow no-display troubleshooting rather than replacing the case button on that evidence alone.
