If your laptop microphone is silent, too quiet, missing, or failing in just one app, first check mute controls and connections, then test the input in your operating system. If that test works, focus on the app’s microphone choice and permissions. If the mic is still missing or silent after software checks, the laptop may need service.
Identify what is failing
Note whether the microphone is absent from the system’s input list, appears but captures no sound, records at a very low level, or fails only in one application. This distinction helps separate an input or hardware issue from an app-specific setting.

- Check mute controls on the laptop, headset, and app. Laptop designs differ, and not every model has a physical microphone-mute switch.
- If you use a headset or other external audio device, disconnect and reconnect it firmly.
- Make sure the microphone opening is not covered. Its location varies by laptop model.
Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting also recommends checking that a microphone or headset is connected and positioned correctly.
Test the microphone in Windows or macOS
A system-level test tells you whether the operating system receives sound before you troubleshoot the problem app. Available inputs depend on your computer and connected devices.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone you intend to use.
- Open its properties and choose Start test. Speak normally, stop the test, and play the sample.
- If the recording is too quiet, raise Input volume and test again.
Microsoft documents this test in its Windows microphone setup and testing guidance. Menu wording can vary slightly by Windows release.
macOS
- Open the Apple menu, then choose System Settings > Sound > Input.
- Select the microphone you want to use.
- Speak and adjust Input volume while watching the input level.
Apple’s Mac sound input settings explain how to select a device and change its level. Depending on the Mac and connected equipment, the list may include built-in, display, iPhone, or external microphones; not every model offers every option.
Allow microphone access
Privacy controls can block one app even when the microphone works elsewhere. Check system access and the affected app’s permission.

Windows 11
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- Allow the affected app. If it is desktop software, check Let desktop apps access your microphone as well.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Enable device and app access, then check the affected app or the desktop-app control.
Microsoft notes that desktop apps do not always appear individually in the app list. Its microphone privacy guidance describes the separate controls. A website may also ask for microphone permission in the browser or on the site; enabling browser access alone may not grant permission to a particular website. See Microsoft’s app and website permission guidance.
macOS
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Enable access for the app that needs to record.
- If it still cannot record, quit the app, change its microphone permission, reopen the app, and test again.
Apple’s microphone access and recording guidance covers built-in and external microphones. Older macOS releases may use System Preferences and Security & Privacy instead of the current menu names.
If the system test works but one app does not
Choose the same microphone inside the affected app, then check that app’s mute and input-level controls. A working system test with a failure in only one app points toward its input selection or permission, rather than proving the microphone hardware is faulty.

First recheck connections and microphone privacy settings, especially if the problem began after a Windows update. A permission setting can block access even when the timing makes a driver issue seem likely.
- Confirm that the intended microphone is connected and that microphone access is enabled.
- Use Windows Update or the laptop manufacturer’s support instructions to check for an audio-driver update.
- If the microphone remains undetected, follow Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting steps for reinstalling the audio driver, then restart and test again.
Microsoft outlines these steps in its microphone troubleshooting guidance. If the problem persists, use the laptop maker’s instructions for that model rather than a paid third-party driver utility. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; a laptop can still run it, but that support status matters when seeking updates and assistance.

Compare the built-in mic with an external one
If the built-in microphone fails its system test, try a compatible headset microphone or external USB microphone if one is available. If the external mic works while the built-in one does not, the difference helps narrow the issue to the internal microphone or its connection, but it does not identify a particular failed component.
External microphones and headset mics can be temporary alternatives, not repairs to the built-in mic. Check your laptop’s ports and device compatibility before buying anything. Microsoft suggests an external mic or headset as a workaround for voice typing in its voice typing guidance. Apple also documents USB microphone and recording troubleshooting and notes that a headset microphone may help with dictation in a noisy or echoing room in its Mac dictation guidance.

When to arrange service
Contact the laptop manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the built-in mic remains absent or silent after checking connections, permissions, input selection, app settings, and applicable software updates. A specific replacement part cannot be identified without the laptop’s make and model. If an external mic or audio interface is the device that fails, Apple advises checking with its manufacturer for software updates and compatibility information.
Check which app is using the microphone
Windows shows a microphone icon in the taskbar notification area when an app is using the mic. On Mac, an orange dot near Control Center indicates microphone use; Control Center may also show which app is accessing it. See Microsoft’s microphone privacy guidance and Apple’s Mac microphone indicator guidance.
