To test a LAN cable, use an Ethernet cable tester that checks wiremap, then interpret its result only as far as the tester allows. A basic tester can reveal common wiring faults; it cannot prove that a cable meets a speed target or complies with cabling standards. For those questions, use a qualification or certification tool designed for the job.
Choose the test based on what you need to know
“Is this patch cable wired correctly?”, “Where is the break in this installed run?” and “Will this link support the planned network speed?” are different questions. A simple verifier can answer the first, some models can help with the second, and the third may require qualification testing. Standards compliance requires suitable certification equipment.

| Need | Test capability to look for | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Check a loose Ethernet patch cable | Wiremap and detection of common faults | Whether conductors map as expected and whether the tester detects specified wiring problems |
| Troubleshoot an installed run | Wiremap, length or distance-to-fault measurement; remote IDs or tracing if needed | Information that can help locate or identify a fault, within the model’s limits |
| Check whether a link supports an application or speed | Qualification or performance testing | Whether the link meets the tested tool’s criteria for specified applications or performance |
| Document compliance with cabling standards | Certification testing for the applicable limits | Standards-oriented test results for the specified configuration |
Before testing, check that the tester supports the cable type, connector and termination you are using. Functions and specifications vary by model. NetAlly describes wire mapping with TDR and resistance measurements to estimate length and identify certain faults, while noting that its referenced troubleshooting tools do not certify cabling: Cable Testing & Wire Mapping.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to check a cable’s wiremap
- Disconnect the cable from network equipment before testing, and follow the tester manufacturer’s instructions.
- Connect the tester to one end of the cable. Attach the supplied remote or far-end unit at the other end when the tester requires one.
- Run the wiremap test and compare the displayed conductor map with the expected wiring configuration for the cable.
- Investigate any reported open, short, crossed or reversed pair, or split pair. The faults a tester can detect and the way it reports them depend on the model.
A passing wiremap means the tester found the conductor connections mapped as expected. It is not a measurement of every property that affects transmission. Fluke Networks lists parameters such as length, attenuation, NEXT, DC loop resistance and return loss among datacom cable test measurements: Datacom cable test parameters.

What common test results mean
- Open: A conductor connection is interrupted somewhere along the tested path.
- Short: Conductors that should remain separate are electrically connected.
- Crossed or reversed pair: The conductors do not connect to the expected pins or pair positions.
- Split pair: The pin map may appear continuous, but conductors from different twisted pairs have been combined in a way that can impair transmission. Not every basic tester detects this fault.
- Pass: The tester found no fault within the checks it performed. This does not guarantee that the cable supports a particular speed or meets a category’s full performance limits.
Use length and fault-location readings carefully
Some testers estimate cable length or distance to a fault, which can help narrow down where an open or short lies in an installed run. The accuracy, supported length and assumptions used for these measurements are specific to the tester and cable setup. Do not apply one model’s range or accuracy figures to other testers. Fluke’s MicroScanner datasheet gives specifications for that product family; consult the documentation for the particular tool you use.
When a wiremap pass is not enough
If you need to check application or speed support
Use a qualification or performance tester intended to evaluate whether the link supports the application in question. For example, Fluke describes frequency-based performance testing up to 10GBASE-T for its LinkIQ product family. That is a capability claimed for that product family, not a general ability of basic cable testers: LinkIQ cable+network tester.

If you need standards compliance
Use an appropriate certification tester and the test configuration required for the applicable standard. A continuity check or simple wiremapper does not certify a Cat 5e, Cat 6 or other cable installation. Fluke Networks explains the distinction between verification, qualification and certification, and states that certification equipment is needed to establish whether a link fails TIA or ISO performance requirements: Verification, qualification and certification.

If the cable passes but the connection still fails
A clean wiremap rules out only the wiring faults the tester checks. It does not identify every cause of network trouble. Depending on the symptoms, the next step may be an application-performance test or further diagnosis of the network equipment and link. If the question is whether cabling meets a required performance limit, use a tester built to measure that limit rather than treating a basic pass as proof.
