How to Test a Data Parser Against 126 Adversarial Inputs

A parser security test should check not only whether hostile input is rejected, but also what happens before rejection. Here’s how to use the maintainer-described 126-case corpus in regression testing.

To find out whether a parser handles hostile data safely, test more than whether it rejects malformed input: check what it does before rejection and whether it accepts data under a dangerous interpretation. A parser can sit at a trust boundary, where untrusted input must not be treated as trusted. MITRE lists CWE-501, Trust Boundary Violation, among its weaknesses.

What the 126-case corpus covers

In a 2026 article, StanzaAPI maintainer DrMkdaddy describes a free, CC0-1.0 corpus of 126 documented hostile inputs across 13 data formats. The article says each case includes expected safe behavior and a CWE where one exists. These are the maintainer’s published counts and descriptions; they have not been independently audited case by case.

The corpus groups cases into six threat classes:

  • Injection: input that could be interpreted as instructions or executable content rather than data.
  • Resource exhaustion: input designed to consume excessive processing time, memory, or other resources.
  • Encoding: input that exploits differences in how characters or byte sequences are decoded.
  • Validation bypass: input that evades checks or is interpreted differently at different stages.
  • Structural confusion: input that exploits assumptions about a document’s shape or meaning.
  • Prompt injection: data that attempts to influence an AI agent processing it.

The examples show why parser security extends beyond syntax checks:

  • An XML message can trigger an external entity (XXE) risk.
  • Validating a VAT number can create an SSRF risk if validation causes an unsafe network request.
  • EPCIS JSON-LD processing can expose prototype-pollution or remote-context risks.
  • A CBAM spreadsheet export can contain formula injection.
  • Data passed to a reconciliation agent can carry prompt-injection instructions.

These are examples described by the corpus author, not evidence that a particular parser is vulnerable. The article reports no independent benchmark, measured failure rate, or comparison of parser implementations. The case count describes the corpus, not the prevalence of these attacks or how effective the corpus is at finding bugs.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to run adversarial cases as parser tests

The author’s proposed workflow is to use the format-specific JSON corpus as test input, then compare each parser result with that case’s expected safe behavior. Treat the expected outcome as an assertion: it may be rejection, sanitization, or a specific error. Run these cases alongside valid-data fixtures so changes are checked against both hostile and ordinary input.

  1. Select the relevant corpus. Choose the JSON corpus for the format your parser accepts; do not assume a case for one format tests another format’s handling.
  2. Feed each case’s payload to the parser. Exercise the same parsing and validation path your application uses, including downstream processing where it affects the interpretation or handling of that data.
  3. Assert the documented safe outcome. Check for the case’s expected rejection, sanitization, or explicit error. A test that merely confirms the process did not crash can miss dangerous acceptance or side effects.
  4. Run valid fixtures in the same regression suite. This helps catch regressions in both directions: unsafe acceptance of hostile input and unintended rejection or alteration of valid data.
  5. Keep outcomes visible. Make failures identify the case and the unexpected behavior, so a new acceptance, side effect, or error change can be investigated.

DrMkdaddy’s framing is useful: “An adversarial case asks ‘what did it do before it rejected, and did it quietly accept something it shouldn’t have?’” The test should therefore consider behavior during processing, not only the final return value.

Where to start and what to check

The article recommends beginning with XXE, SSRF, prototype-pollution, and resource-exhaustion cases. That prioritization is a proposed starting point, not a measured ranking of risk. Choose tests based on the formats and processing paths your system actually exposes, and include cases that exercise effects beyond the parser’s immediate output.
