Test a continuous YouTube stream by sending a representative feed to a scheduled stream, confirming its visibility before transmission, and checking both the Live Control Room and the viewer experience. A rehearsal can expose setup, network, audio, and failover problems; it cannot guarantee that a later broadcast will stay uninterrupted.
Before you send a test feed
This procedure focuses on streaming with an encoder, such as encoder software or professional hardware. YouTube also supports webcam and mobile streaming, but those workflows have different setup checks. YouTube recommends trying a test live stream to get comfortable with the steps: YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.

- Open YouTube Studio and choose the stream. Go to Live Control Room, then create or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. Confirm its title, description, audience settings, and scheduled time.
- Check visibility before transmitting. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility. Its tips recommend choosing public or unlisted before starting a test, but select the option that fits your rehearsal and verify who can access it. Do not assume that a test is private. See YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream and YouTube Help: Live stream visibility guidance.
- Allow time to prepare. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least 2 hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. These are recommendations, not mandatory platform thresholds. See YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
Run the encoder preflight
Connect the encoder safely
In the encoder, enter the stream URL and stream key shown for the selected stream in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, overlays, or public instructions. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube explains stream-key setup in its encoder streaming instructions.

Test with the sort of audio and movement the actual broadcast will contain. A static title card alone will not reveal issues that appear during speech, music, motion, scene changes, or transitions. YouTube specifically recommends including similar audio and movement in a test. Before starting the event, check that the feed appears correctly in the Live Control Room preview; confirm the picture, sound, overlays, and synchronization there. See YouTube streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.

Check upload capacity and stream health
Test the upload connection from the location and network you will use for the broadcast. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. This is operational guidance, not a guarantee: other devices sharing the connection or a brief connectivity interruption can still affect delivery. Watch the Live Control Room stream-health status and messages during the test, rather than relying only on the encoder’s local preview. See YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
Check what viewers will actually see
Open the stream from the channel and watch pages using the intended account or access conditions, then check playback on a mobile device. Listen for clean, synchronized audio; look for unstable or dropped video; and verify that graphics and chat behave as intended. YouTube recommends checking access from channel and watch pages, testing mobile playback, and monitoring audio and video quality. A healthy local encoder preview does not by itself confirm that viewers can open and watch the stream. See YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.

Test backup failover and recording, if you use them
Exercise the backup encoder
If your setup includes a backup encoder, test the handoff rather than assuming it works. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. This deliberately interrupts the primary feed, so do it during a rehearsal—not during the public event. A wired connection is optional, not a requirement or a guarantee of stability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConfirm the archive is being written
If you record a local archive, check that the file exists and its size is increasing while the stream runs. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is archive guidance, not a recommended test length. For current details, see YouTube Help: Live streaming tips and YouTube Help: encoder streaming instructions.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
End the rehearsal deliberately
- Decide whether the test recording should remain available and adjust visibility or remove it as appropriate.
- End the stream using the encoder and confirm that YouTube shows the stream as ended.
- For the eventual public event, keep Live Control Room health visible and monitor the broadcast throughout; a successful rehearsal does not certify future continuity.
Common test problems and what to check
- No preview appears: Confirm that the encoder has the stream URL and key for the selected Live Control Room stream, that it is transmitting, and that the key has not been reset since it was entered.
- Viewers cannot open the rehearsal: Recheck the stream’s visibility and the account or link being used. Public, private, and unlisted access differ; test with the same access route your intended viewers will use.
- The preview or playback is unstable: Check the stream-health messages and available upload bandwidth. Account for both primary and backup bitrate, plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; shared-network use and interruptions can still cause problems.
- Audio is missing, poor, or out of sync: Check the encoder’s audio input and the actual player playback, not just the preview. Include representative sound in the next test.
- The backup does not take over: Verify the backup encoder is configured for the same stream and repeat the planned failover test while the stream is still a rehearsal.
