Emulation makes broad regression checks practical, but it cannot certify that a game behaves the same on actual mobile hardware.
1. Define what your game promises to support
Start with the requirements your team actually supports rather than a supposedly universal device list. Record the browser families and minimum versions, mobile operating systems, orientations, and input modes that matter for your players. If audience analytics are available, use them to prioritize coverage; without project-specific usage data, a fixed set of devices should not be presented as representative of every player.

- List supported desktop and mobile browser families and versions.
- Note whether the game supports portrait, landscape, or both.
- List keyboard, mouse, pen, and touch controls that players can use.
- Identify layout breakpoints, canvas dimensions, and fullscreen behavior that could affect play.
2. Cover browser engines separately from screen sizes
A responsive preview in one browser does not test other browser engines. Playwright supports projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and can also run branded Chrome or Edge channels when the published browser itself matters—for example, for release regression, enterprise policy, or media-codec behavior. Playwright’s WebKit build is not the same as running branded Safari. See Playwright’s browser documentation.
Create a compact set of browser projects first, then layer viewport and device configurations onto them. Playwright’s device registry can supply settings such as user agent, screen size, viewport, and touch capabilities; override viewport dimensions where your game’s breakpoints or layout require it. Example Playwright project setup
This configuration creates engine projects. It does not, by itself, cover every viewport, device, or branded browser version; add the profiles your support requirements call for.

3. Choose viewport sizes around real failure points
Use your own CSS or game-layout breakpoints as the starting point. Test just below, at, and just above each meaningful breakpoint: a menu, HUD, or control layout can fail at the transition even when familiar device presets appear fine. Include landscape wherever the game supports it, and check device-pixel ratio (DPR) when canvas scaling or image sharpness matters.
Chrome DevTools device mode lets you enter custom dimensions, inspect media-query breakpoints, change orientation and device type, enable touch mode, and adjust DPR. Its width presets span mobile, tablet, laptop, and 4K sizes; treat them as convenient examples, not proof of market coverage. The instructions are in Chrome’s device mode documentation.

Make each viewport check repeatable
- Write down the viewport width and height, orientation, and DPR for each test case.
- Choose dimensions just below, at, and just above game-specific breakpoints, then add any standard presets that help your team reproduce issues.
- Run the same gameplay smoke path at each important combination rather than checking only whether the first screen fits.
4. Exercise the full play loop and supported controls
For each important browser-and-viewport combination, follow a short, repeatable path: load the game, start or resume play, use the main controls, complete a meaningful action, pause or open a menu, then return to play. Check that controls are visible, reachable, and appropriately sized for the intended input.
Test keyboard, mouse, and touch wherever the game offers them. The web Pointer Events model brings mouse, pen, and touch into a shared event system while still exposing pointer type, so device-specific behavior remains possible. Check for missed or duplicated actions if the game handles input differently by pointer type. See MDN’s Pointer Events guide.

5. Check rendering, canvas behavior, and fullscreen
For canvas or similarly rendered games, verify that the play area remains visible, aspect-ratio behavior matches the design, the HUD and controls stay inside the playable region, and graphics remain acceptably sharp at different viewport sizes and DPR settings. The MDN HTMLCanvasElement reference describes the interface for manipulating canvas layout and presentation; support details can vary.

If the game offers fullscreen, test both entering and leaving it in every supported browser. Include orientation changes or interruptions where they are relevant to the game’s use. The Fullscreen API can let an element such as an online game occupy the screen, but MDN flags it as not Baseline because some widely used browsers do not support it uniformly: Fullscreen API documentation.

6. Validate critical cases on real hardware
Use emulation for breadth and quick regression, then run a representative set of critical cases on actual phones or tablets. Chrome describes device mode as a “first-order approximation” of how a page looks and feels on mobile: the code is not running on a mobile device, and factors such as mobile CPU architecture are not reproduced. Chrome recommends testing on a real device when in doubt. Read Chrome’s device mode guidance.
Prioritize physical checks for mobile performance, touch feel, browser chrome and visible safe area, orientation changes, fullscreen, and device-specific rendering or platform APIs. Record the physical device, OS and browser versions, orientation, viewport, DPR if known, and exact steps that exposed a defect. That record makes it easier to reproduce the problem in an automated test where possible.
7. Balance automation and physical testing

These approaches complement each other: automate the combinations you need to recheck often, then use physical devices to investigate risks that emulation cannot faithfully represent. The exact models and browser versions should follow your audience and support commitment, not a generic checklist.
