Test a 24/7 YouTube radio stream as an unlisted live event before launch. YouTube recommends unlisted testing to check audio, video, and equipment; start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then check stream health and playback before ending the rehearsal and switching the launch event to public.
Set up a private rehearsal in YouTube Studio
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Set its visibility to Unlisted before starting the test. YouTube lists public, private, and unlisted as visibility options and recommends unlisted testing for checking audio, video, and equipment.
- Configure the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is compromised, use YouTube’s documented stream-key reset process.
- Start the encoder and wait for preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the signal and displays the stream preview. Do not treat the encoder’s “streaming” indicator alone as proof that viewers can play the event.
- Send the real program feed. Test the audio you intend to broadcast, including representative transitions and any visual loop, artwork, or still image that will accompany it. A generic placeholder will not reveal problems in the actual playlist or audio chain.
- Review the event before ending the test. Check stream health and any error messages in Live Control Room, then open the watch page and listen on desktop and mobile. When finished, end the event deliberately in YouTube Studio; stop the encoder after YouTube has ended the event. Before launch, confirm the intended event’s visibility is Public.
Choose a visibility setting that matches the rehearsal
Unlisted is YouTube’s directly recommended test mode. It keeps the test out of public discovery while letting you share its watch link with intended reviewers. Do not assume the link is inaccessible to anyone who receives it.

YouTube also offers Private, but the official pages referenced here do not establish all current viewer-access consequences for Private versus Unlisted. If you need a tightly limited audience, check the visibility and viewer-permission details shown in Studio for your event before relying on either setting. Unlisted is convenient when reviewers need to open the watch page without making the test public.
What to check during the test
Audio quality and continuity
- Confirm the correct source is playing and that the level remains steady.
- Listen for unintended silence, clipping, abrupt changes in loudness, or gaps between tracks.
- Check transitions across enough of the actual program to encounter the kinds of changes the live playlist will make.
These are practical checks for a radio feed; YouTube’s general test guidance calls for audio and movement similar to the planned stream, rather than setting a radio-specific acceptance standard.

Picture and playback
- Check the artwork, visualizer, or loop that will accompany the audio, if any.
- Open the watch page and verify that it plays on both a computer and a mobile device.
- Ask a reviewer to check the page using the unlisted link if you want another person to confirm playback.
Health, network, and recovery
- Keep Live Control Room open and respond to any stream-health warning or error message.
- YouTube recommends enough upload bandwidth for the stream and a backup encoder, plus 20% headroom. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee for your particular ISP or location; shared connections can reduce available bandwidth.
- For computer streaming, YouTube recommends Ethernet. It is a reliability measure, not a prerequisite; YouTube’s streaming tips say expensive equipment is not required to get started.
- Test backup-encoder failover only if your launch setup actually includes a backup. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet and checking that playback rolls over to the backup.
- If you keep a local recording, check that the local archive is growing as expected.
Latency
For a non-interactive radio stream, normal latency is a sensible setting to evaluate. YouTube describes normal latency as suitable for non-interactive streams; low and ultra-low latency are aimed at progressively more interaction and may increase buffering. Latency is a trade-off between delay and playback stability, not a privacy setting.
Use encoder settings suited to your feed
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the format you are sending. There is no single bitrate that is correct for every stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec. After configuring the encoder, verify the received feed and stream health in Live Control Room rather than assuming the selected settings guarantee a clean stream.

Common problems and what to do
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | Confirm the encoder is running and that its stream URL and key match the event. | Correct the encoder destination or key, restart the encoder, and wait for the preview before assessing the event. |
| Audio is silent, uneven, or distorted | Check the encoder’s selected audio source and listen to the actual program feed. | Correct the source or level, then test the relevant transitions again. |
| Playback buffers or the connection appears unstable | Review stream health, available upload capacity, and whether the connection is shared. | Allow the recommended bandwidth headroom; on a computer, try Ethernet rather than relying on Wi-Fi. |
| The test is visible to the wrong audience | Recheck the event’s visibility in Studio; an unlisted link can be opened by people who receive it. | Change the visibility or viewer permissions as appropriate and verify the current behavior in Studio before continuing. |
| A primary encoder failure does not roll over | Confirm that a backup encoder is configured as part of the launch design. | Test failover using YouTube’s suggested primary-stop or Ethernet-disconnect check; do not assume a backup exists if none was configured. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube radio stream rather than maintaining an encoder at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
