Hold one sunglass lens in front of a bright LCD screen and slowly rotate the glasses. A distinct change in brightness is a useful sign that the lens is polarized. If nothing changes, that alone does not prove the lenses are unpolarized: the display may not show the effect clearly.
Check the lenses with an LCD screen
- Open a bright screen. A computer or phone screen with a light or white image is a practical choice. Glossy LCD screens tend to make the effect easier to see than matte displays; OLED screens may show little or no change.
- Look through one lens. Hold the sunglasses between your eyes and the screen.
- Rotate the glasses slowly. Watch for a clear darkening or brightness shift as the lens turns. That change is evidence of polarization, not a calibrated measurement or certification. If the image stays the same, try another LCD screen, compare with a lens you know is polarized, or check reflected glare. Screen characteristics can make the effect weak or difficult to notice, so one unsuccessful check is inconclusive. Confirm with another indication
Compare against a known polarized lens
Place the lenses close together and rotate one while looking through both. When their polarization directions cross, substantially less light should pass through. This is most useful if one lens is already known to be polarized; two unverified pairs cannot confirm each other’s properties. The comparison says nothing about UV blocking.
Look for a change in reflected glare
View reflections from water, snow, glass, or a vehicle surface through the sunglasses, then change the lens or head angle. A strong change in glare is consistent with polarization, which reduces reflections from many surfaces. A weak effect in one setting is not a definitive negative: the reflection, viewing angle, and light conditions matter. Polarization does not establish UV protection
Polarization and ultraviolet filtering are separate lens properties. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists them separately, and UV performance depends on lens construction: FDA guidance on sunglasses and UV protection. A successful LCD or glare check tells you whether the lenses appear to polarize light; it does not measure how much UVA or UVB reaches your eyes.
For UV protection, look for an explicit label stating UV400 or 99–100% UVA and UVB protection. The FDA says sunglasses rated UV400 or “100% UV protection” block more than 99% of UVA and UVB radiation. That figure applies to the stated UV category, not to a do-it-yourself polarization test. Lens darkness does not determine UV capability, and a higher price does not guarantee greater protection. The NEI also notes that many optical shops have a photometer that can test UV blocking; if a pair lacks a trustworthy UV rating, ask an optical shop or eye-care professional whether they can measure it.

When replacing a pair, assess the UV label, whether polarized lenses would help with glare in your activities, and how well the frame covers your eyes. The NEI advises choosing a fit that limits light entering around the lenses and considering activities such as time near water or snow. A combined label such as “polarized” and “UV400” addresses two distinct needs; retailer wording is a product claim, not a measurement of a particular pair.
