Check the exact model and hardware revision, then confirm Wi-Fi 8 (IEEE 802.11bn) support in the manufacturer’s specifications and look for certification of the finished product. A router’s capabilities do not upgrade a phone or laptop: verify the router and each client separately. As of October 7, 2026, IEEE still lists 802.11bn as an in-process project, so some claims refer to draft-based hardware rather than products certified to a finalized standard.
What does Wi-Fi 8 mean?
Wi-Fi 8 is the consumer-facing name associated with IEEE 802.11bn, also known as Ultra High Reliability (UHR). The IEEE 802.11 project timeline lists P802.11bn as in process. That means a Wi-Fi 8 label alone does not establish that a device has been certified against a final standard.

Qualcomm describes Wi-Fi 8 as the next-generation standard developed under the 802.11bn initiative and projects final IEEE approval in 2028. It also projects Wi-Fi Alliance certification for January 2028. These are Qualcomm forecasts, not completed milestones; check the IEEE timeline and the Wi-Fi Alliance product finder for current status.
How do I know if my router supports Wi-Fi 8?
- Identify the exact router model and revision. Check the product label, router administration page, or manufacturer app. Record the full model number and hardware revision; similar names or different revisions can have different specifications.
- Open the manufacturer’s page for that exact product. Look for an explicit Wi-Fi 8 or IEEE 802.11bn statement. Note whether the manufacturer says support is based on draft specifications. A brand-wide claim or a chip announcement is not proof about your finished router.
- Check certification for the finished product. Search the Wi-Fi Alliance product finder by product name or model and inspect its listed generation and features. Do not treat a planned certification date as proof that certification has happened.
- Confirm release and regional availability. Verify the product appears on an official manufacturer page for your region, rather than relying on a roadmap or announcement.
For example, Broadcom’s BCM6718 product brief, dated May 18, 2026, specifies IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) Release 1.0 compliance for access-point silicon. That documents a chip’s stated capabilities; by itself, it does not prove that a particular retail router using it is available, finalized, or certified.

Does my phone or laptop support Wi-Fi 8?
Check each device’s own specifications for explicit Wi-Fi 8 or 802.11bn support, then review its driver or firmware documentation and certification listing. A Wi-Fi 8-capable access point cannot give Wi-Fi 8 capability to a phone, computer, or other client that lacks the necessary hardware and implementation.
Chip and platform claims need qualification, too. Qualcomm’s F8 networking platform page describes planned compliance based on draft specifications. A platform announcement is not confirmation that a finished phone, laptop, or adapter is shipping or certified. The available sources do not establish a currently certified consumer Wi-Fi 8 client model.

How to distinguish a real product from a Wi-Fi 8 claim
| Evidence | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| IEEE project status | Where the 802.11bn standardization project stands; the IEEE timeline currently lists it as in process. | That a particular product is released or certified. |
| Chip or platform specification | Capabilities the component or platform vendor says its silicon can support. Broadcom’s BCM6718 brief is one access-point silicon example. | That every product using the component implements those capabilities or has passed certification. |
| Manufacturer specification for an exact product | What the manufacturer claims about that particular model and revision, including whether support is draft-based. | Independent confirmation of certification unless the product also appears in the certification database. |
| Wi-Fi Alliance product listing | Whether the finished product appears in the certification database and which features are listed. | That a different model or hardware revision has the same status. |
| Roadmap or forecast | A company’s stated plan or expected timing. | That the product has launched, is available in your region, or has passed certification. |
A May 28, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report described tentative TP-Link plans for an Archer 8 router in October 2026, a Deco 8 mesh system in Q1 2027, and a Roam 8 travel router in Q2 2027, with extenders and client adapters later. Those were planned dates, not confirmation of launch or certification. Check current official product pages and certification records rather than relying on the roadmap.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill older devices work with a Wi-Fi 8 router?
Qualcomm says Wi-Fi 8 is intended to be backward compatible. Older devices can connect using the Wi-Fi generation they support; connecting to a Wi-Fi 8 router does not make them Wi-Fi 8 devices. To use Wi-Fi 8 on a link, both the router or access point and the client need suitable Wi-Fi 8 capability.

Are Wi-Fi 8 performance figures guarantees?
Qualcomm attributes goals to the IEEE scope document of up to 25% higher throughput in challenging signal conditions, up to 25% lower latency at the 95th percentile, and up to 25% fewer dropped packets during access-point transitions. These are target improvements as reported by Qualcomm, not measured results from shipping Wi-Fi 8 products. They should not be read as a guarantee for a particular router, device, or network.
