A Nifty 50 P/E below its own historical median can indicate that the index is cheaper than its usual level—but it does not prove the index is intrinsically undervalued or predict a rebound. As of 12 October 2026, a secondary report using NSE data put the index P/E at 19.12, below a reported five-year median of 21.95. That is a dated, relative comparison, not a buy signal.
What an “undervalued” Nifty 50 reading can—and cannot—tell you
There is no single official threshold at which the Nifty 50 becomes undervalued. The practical approach is to compare a dated valuation measure with a clearly defined reference, such as the index’s own five-year median P/E, and then check that the measure is calculated on a comparable basis.

That comparison answers a limited question: was the index’s price low relative to the earnings used in the calculation, compared with its usual level over that window? It does not establish what the shares are worth, whether earnings will hold up, or whether the index will rise. A below-median multiple is a historical signal that needs context, not a verdict about future returns.

The reported reading was about 12.9% below that median, calculated as (21.95 − 19.12) ÷ 21.95. This means the reported multiple screened below its five-year reference on that date. It does not mean the index was 12.9% below fair value.

The distinction matters because “cheap” can refer to several different things: cheap compared with the index’s own past, cheap compared with expected future earnings, or cheap compared with an estimate of intrinsic value. The available figures support only the first kind of comparison.
How index P/E works
Price-to-earnings, or P/E, relates the market value investors assign to a set of shares to the earnings those shares generate. For an index, the calculation aggregates the index constituents rather than treating the index as a company. NSE’s explainer describes index P/E as a comparison benchmark and explains that the calculation uses index market capitalization and constituent earnings.
NSE’s stated approach aggregates reported earnings over the trailing four quarters and adjusts for free float and other index factors. It uses consolidated earnings where available and standalone earnings otherwise. The result is a trailing P/E based on reported earnings, not a forward P/E based on analysts’ forecasts. A change in the ratio can therefore come from a change in market prices, in the earnings included in the calculation, or in both.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat construction is useful for comparing an index with its own history when the methodology is consistent. But a P/E is not a standalone estimate of intrinsic value: it does not tell you how durable the earnings are, what growth is likely, or what level of risk investors should accept. As NSE’s explainer puts it, “Index P/E can be used as an effective comparison benchmark.” The key is to use it as a benchmark, not as a complete valuation model.

How to check the comparison yourself
- Find a dated index reading. NSE identifies Nifty index P/E as a daily statistic. Record the observation date as well as the number; a P/E changes when prices move or reported earnings change.
- Choose a historical window and statistic. For example, compare the current reading with a five-year median, or use a percentile if one is available. NSE provides historical P/E, price-to-book (P/B), and dividend-yield data. State the window and compare like with like: median against median, not a current reading against an unspecified average.
- Check the earnings basis. Confirm whether the series uses trailing reported earnings or a forecast basis, and whether the calculation convention is consistent across the dates being compared. NSE’s described method uses trailing four-quarter reported earnings, consolidated where available and standalone otherwise.
- Check for a second valuation dimension. Look at P/B, dividend yield, or another measure such as sales-to-price. These measures capture different aspects of value; they should add context, not be blended into the P/E comparison without explanation.
- Separate valuation from investment performance. If discussing returns, establish whether the series is the price index or the total-return index. The latter includes dividends.
Use the same Nifty index, earnings convention, time window, and summary statistic throughout a comparison. If the method or index changes partway through a historical series, the resulting figures may not be directly comparable. A long series is not automatically a better comparison if its underlying calculation basis is unclear.
What the reported figures show
The figures below come from different dates and sources. They are useful as dated reference points, but should not be mistaken for one synchronized valuation snapshot.
| Figure | Date and source | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 P/E: 19.12 | 12 October 2026; secondary report using NSE data | A reported daily reading. The official NSE daily observation for this date was not available in readable form in the cited material, so attribute this figure to the report rather than describing it as a directly verified NSE file. |
| Five-year median P/E: 21.95 | Reported in the same secondary report | The reference used for that report’s comparison. The window is five years; it is a historical benchmark, not an intrinsic-value estimate. |
| P/E: 20.27; P/B: 3.21; dividend yield: 1.35% | NSE Indices factsheet dated 29 May 2026 | An official, earlier snapshot with three distinct valuation measures. It is not a same-day cross-check of the 12 October reading. |
| P/E: 26.28 | NSE India historical report, 1 January 2019 | A dated historical observation. One point cannot establish a long-term average or show how frequently the index traded above or below a threshold. |
The five-year comparison is the clearest answer to the narrow question “Was the reported Nifty 50 P/E below its five-year median on 12 October 2026?” Yes: 19.12 was below 21.95. The comparison does not show that the index was cheap against every other period, that earnings were about to grow, or that buying then would have produced a positive return.
The May factsheet is valuable for illustrating why a single number is incomplete: alongside a 20.27 P/E, it listed a 3.21 P/B and a 1.35% dividend yield. But because it was dated 29 May 2026, comparing its P/E directly with the October value as if only methodology differed would ignore the passage of time. Prices and earnings may have changed in between.

Why an index can look cheap without being a bargain
Earnings can move as well as prices
A P/E falls if the market price declines while earnings stay constant, which can make the shares cheaper relative to those earnings. But the ratio can also fall because the earnings denominator rises. Conversely, a market decline does not necessarily make an index undervalued if earnings expectations or reported earnings are deteriorating. For a trailing P/E, the denominator reflects already reported results; it is not a promise about the next four quarters.
The historical reference is a choice, not a universal fair-value line
A five-year median summarizes one particular period. A different window can produce a different reference, especially if the start and end dates include unusually high or low valuations. The median is less affected by a few extreme observations than a mean, but it still describes only the selected history. It does not identify the correct multiple for today’s growth, interest-rate, profitability, or risk environment.
The index is broad, but not the whole market
NSE Indices reported that the Nifty 50 represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalization of NSE-listed stocks as of 30 March 2026. That scale makes the index an important market reference, but it also means the Nifty 50 is not a complete proxy for every listed company or sector. Its aggregate multiple can conceal wide differences between constituents.
NSE Indices also reported that, as of 31 July 2026, 239 ETFs and 279 index funds benchmarked Nifty indices. Those counts cover the Nifty index family, not only Nifty 50. They indicate broad use of Nifty indices as benchmarks, not that the Nifty 50 is fairly priced or that any particular fund is suitable.

Use other valuation measures as context
NSE’s methodology distinguishes earnings-to-price, book-value-to-price, sales-to-price, and dividend yield as separate value factors. These are not interchangeable. They can help reveal whether a P/E signal is isolated, but each answers a different question and has its own limitations.
- P/B: compares market value with book value. It adds a balance-sheet perspective, but book value may be less informative for businesses whose value depends heavily on intangible assets or future growth.
- Sales-to-price: relates valuation to revenue rather than earnings. It can be a supplementary lens where earnings are unusually volatile, but revenue alone does not indicate profitability.
- Dividend yield: expresses dividends relative to price. It provides income context, but a yield is not guaranteed and does not by itself measure total return or valuation.
Read the measures together only after checking their dates and definitions. A P/E from one date paired with a yield from another can create a misleading picture. Nor should a more attractive-looking P/B or yield be treated as confirmation that a below-median P/E predicts a gain.
Do not compare raw P/Es across unlike indices without adjustments
A Nifty 50 P/E and the P/E of another market or index are not automatically apples-to-apples comparisons. Sector mix, earnings growth, accounting conventions, and risk can all differ. An index with a larger share of businesses expected to grow quickly may trade at a different multiple from one dominated by slower-growing companies; the raw gap alone does not establish which is cheaper.

The cited figures do not establish a forward P/E or an intrinsic-value estimate for the Nifty 50, so neither should be inferred from the historical trailing comparison.
Best Value
Price returns are not total returns
The Nifty 50 price index reflects share-price movements. Its Total Returns index also includes dividends. NSE identifies the total-return version as the appropriate mutual-fund benchmark because funds earn dividends. If the question is how an investor performed, compare the relevant fund with a total-return benchmark rather than assuming a price-index chart captures all returns.
This distinction is separate from whether the index is undervalued. A valuation comparison tells you about the price relative to an earnings measure; a return comparison needs a return series that accounts for dividends when appropriate.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the P/E reading dated, and is it from the same Nifty index being analyzed?
- Is the historical window explicit, and are the current value and reference the same statistic?
- Is the earnings basis consistent, especially across a long series?
- Have you checked whether P/B, sales-to-price, or dividend yield adds useful context without confusing one measure for another?
- Are you describing a historical valuation signal, rather than claiming the index is intrinsically cheap or forecasting a rise?
- If discussing investor performance, are you using the price index or total-return index deliberately?
For the October 2026 report, the supported conclusion is narrow: the reported trailing P/E was below the stated five-year median. A stronger conclusion would require a clearly comparable earnings history and additional evidence about the valuation and outlook; the median comparison by itself cannot supply that.
