For a public Xfinity hotspot, the name is a clue, not proof: Xfinity identifies xfinitywifi as open and XFINITY or Xfinity Mobile as secure. The secure connection uses a certificate to validate that you are connecting to a genuine Xfinity hotspot. If your device shows a certificate warning, stop rather than bypassing it.
Check whether you mean a public hotspot or your home network
The public hotspot names below do not identify or authenticate your home router. If you are checking a hotspot in a public place, compare its exact name with Xfinity’s documented names and use the appropriate secure connection process. If you mean the WiFi broadcast by your home gateway, assess the router’s settings instead.

Which public Xfinity WiFi name should you connect to?
| Network name | What Xfinity describes | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| XFINITY or Xfinity Mobile | Secure hotspot network. Xfinity says the connection encrypts traffic between your device and the hotspot and uses a certificate to validate a genuine Xfinity hotspot. | Use Xfinity’s secure profile or app connection flow if your account and device are eligible. Do not ignore a certificate error just because the name looks right. |
| xfinitywifi | Open public hotspot network. | It does not use the secure-profile certificate validation described for the secure network. Treat it as open public WiFi and be cautious with private information. |
Xfinity explains the distinction in its support article, Differences in your Xfinity WiFi network — Secure vs. open connections. A familiar SSID can help you recognize the network type, but the text of a network name alone does not prove who is operating the signal.

How to verify a public hotspot before using it
- Check the exact SSID. Look for one of Xfinity’s documented names:
xfinitywififor open access, orXFINITYorXfinity Mobilefor secure access. Treat the name as a first check, not authentication. - Prefer Xfinity’s secure connection method when eligible. Use the secure profile or the app’s Secure Auto-Connect flow applicable to your device and account. Xfinity says its secure WiFi certificate validates connection to a genuine hotspot.
- Stop at a certificate warning. Do not accept or bypass a certificate error simply to connect. Disconnect and follow Xfinity’s current device-specific setup guidance or contact its support if the warning persists.
- Confirm expected availability if location matters. Find hotspots through the Xfinity app or Xfinity’s hotspot map. A mapped hotspot supports the expectation that service is available in that area; it does not prove that every similarly named nearby signal is authentic.
- Authenticate websites separately. For sensitive browsing, check that the site uses HTTPS and go directly to a known official address or app instead of following an unexpected sign-in prompt. HTTPS encrypts a connection to a site; it does not prove that the site itself is honest.
The Federal Trade Commission makes this distinction in Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know (February 13, 2023): scammers can create fake websites and encrypt them so they appear safe. The FTC also says public WiFi is usually safe given widespread encryption, so the practical lesson is to verify the network and destination rather than assume every public network is unsafe.

What a certificate warning means
Xfinity says its secure hotspot uses a certificate to check that a device is connecting to a genuine Xfinity WiFi hotspot. A warning means your device has not completed that check normally. The warning is not proof by itself that the hotspot is fraudulent, but it is a reason not to proceed until the issue is resolved. Do not treat the displayed network name or a website’s HTTPS lock as a substitute for the hotspot certificate check.
Device and account requirements vary
Hotspot access depends on customer eligibility, device, operating-system version, and setup method. Xfinity says access is available to eligible Xfinity Internet, Comcast Business Internet, and Xfinity Mobile customers, subject to restrictions; Xfinity Prepaid customers do not have hotspot access. Its general hotspot overview lists Apple iOS 17.1 or later and Android 11.0 or later among supported devices, while platform-specific guides describe some exceptions and limited cases.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Android
Xfinity’s Android connection guide says Android 11 or newer can connect to open and secure hotspots, with app-based secure auto-connect for eligible users. In the cases covered by that guide, Android 10 or earlier cannot connect to secure hotspots, though some users may still connect to open xfinitywifi. Account and device exceptions apply; follow the current guide for your setup.

Xfinity’s iOS connection guide describes automatic secure-hotspot connections for specified Xfinity Mobile devices and app-based auto-connect for eligible Xfinity Internet customers. It also outlines profile installation for certain Xfinity Mobile users and device/account combinations. These instructions are not a single rule for every iPhone or iPad, so check the guide for your device and account.

If you are checking your home Xfinity WiFi
A public hotspot’s SSID and certificate process do not verify a home network. For home-router security, the FTC recommends using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, changing the router’s default administrative credentials, and changing its network name. These steps help secure a home network; they do not authenticate a public hotspot. See the FTC’s How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network.
Xfinity also says its CyberSecure feature is available on eligible leased Xfinity Gateways and does not require separate CyberSecure hardware; customers using their own modem are ineligible for that feature. This is a separate home-network feature, not a way to verify a public hotspot. Details are in Xfinity’s CyberSecure information.
