How to Tell Whether an NFL Player Is Out, Doubtful, Questionable, or Active

NFL injury designations are qualitative: Out means no play, Doubtful means unlikely, and Questionable means uncertain. Check the latest official report and game-day inactives.

Use the NFL injury report’s Game Status column to read a player’s listed designation: Out means the player will not play, Doubtful means the player is unlikely to participate, and Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play. These are qualitative labels, not odds. For the final game-day check, look for the official inactive announcement.

What the NFL game-status labels mean

The NFL defines these terms in its policy announcement: “Questionable means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game; Doubtful means it is unlikely the player will participate; and Out means the player will not play.”

Designation Meaning
Out The player will not play in the game.
Doubtful The player is unlikely to participate. It does not mean the player is definitively out.
Questionable It is uncertain whether the player will play. This is not a promise of availability or a numerical probability.
Active Context matters. A player’s game-day status and a team’s 53-player roster designation are different lists; check the game-day inactive announcement to confirm availability for that game.

Probable is not a current game-status category. The NFL removed it in a 2016 policy revision, noting that approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable in prior years did play. That historical figure described the old category; it is not a forecast for a player listed Questionable or Doubtful today.

Practice status is separate from game status

The official injury report has separate fields for practice participation and game status. Practice entries describe participation in practice; the game-status designation addresses expected participation in the game. The NFL’s Week 4, 2026 injury report illustrates the separate columns, including practice entries with blank game-status fields as well as players designated Out, Doubtful, or Questionable.

A player who misses practice is not automatically out of the game. Read the game-status field for the listed designation, and check for subsequent updates. A blank game-status field is not a fourth injury label: NFL policy says a player certain to play is not listed in the Game Status Report, even if the player appeared on a practice report.

How to check whether a player is playing this week

  1. Open the NFL’s official injury report and find the correct week, team, and opponent.
  2. Read the Game Status column separately from the practice participation column.
  3. Interpret the designation literally: Out means will not play; Doubtful means unlikely; Questionable means uncertain.
  4. Check for a later report or update. The NFL’s 2026–27 important dates say teams must update a report if a player’s condition changes after the initial filing.
  5. Near kickoff, check the game-day inactive announcement. It is the practical confirmation that a player has not been deactivated for that game.

When reports are filed—and why timing matters

Filing days depend on the game day and season. For Sunday games in the NFL’s 2026 schedule, teams file the weekly Game Status Report by Friday, by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice. Other game days have different filing days. These are 2026 schedule rules, not a permanent timetable; consult the league calendar for another season.

A report reflects information available when it was filed, and the league requires an update if the player’s condition changes. For a live availability question, use the latest official report available and then the game-day inactives, rather than relying on an earlier designation or a practice entry alone.

What “active” means before kickoff

“Active” can refer to different roster contexts. The NFL distinguishes a game-day active list from the broader 53-player active/inactive roster list. A player being on a team’s 53-player roster does not, by itself, confirm game-day availability. Check the game-day inactive announcement for the specific contest; the NFL explains the roster terminology in its training camp roster FAQs.

Comparing two players’ availability

Compare like with like rather than turning labels into unsupported percentages. Check each player’s exact Game Status designation, the latest report or update, practice participation, and whether the game-day inactive list has been published. A Questionable designation means uncertainty; it does not establish a specific chance of playing.
