Check Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging on the iPhone, then check the chat’s status in Google Messages on Android. A green bubble alone does not prove RCS: iPhone uses green for both RCS and SMS/MMS. Apple’s setup guide notes that the iPhone setting confirms RCS is enabled on that device, not necessarily which protocol a particular message used.
Check whether RCS is enabled on the iPhone
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Apps, then Messages.
- Tap RCS Messaging and check that it is turned on.
If the RCS Messaging option is missing, Apple says RCS may not be available for that device, region, or provider. RCS on iPhone requires iOS 18 or later and a provider that supports it. After enabling it, activation can take a few hours. See Apple’s RCS setup instructions.

Check the specific conversation on Android
- On the Android phone, open Google Messages.
- Tap the profile icon, then Messages settings > RCS chats.
- Review the RCS status. In the conversation, check the composer or status wording for whether the message is being sent as RCS or SMS/MMS; labels can vary by app version.
Google says RCS chats are active only when all participants have RCS. If RCS is unavailable for a participant, the conversation may use SMS/MMS instead. The iPhone’s enabled switch is therefore a device-level check, while the Android conversation status is a useful check for that chat. See Google Messages’ RCS FAQ.
What the bubble color does—and does not—tell you
| What you see on iPhone | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Blue bubble | iMessage. |
| Green bubble | RCS or SMS/MMS; color alone cannot distinguish them. |
Apple explicitly says both RCS and SMS/MMS messages appear in green bubbles. Green means the message is not iMessage, not that it definitely used RCS. Read receipts, typing indicators, or higher-resolution media may be clues, but they are not a universal confirmation of protocol. Apple’s comparison of iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS describes the distinctions.

Keep RCS status separate from encryption
An “Encrypted” label and lock icon indicate that end-to-end encryption is active; they are not the basic test for whether a conversation is RCS. Apple describes encrypted RCS as a beta beginning with iOS 26.5, with supported providers required for all participants and rollout over time. An RCS conversation without the lock may simply lack encrypted-RCS availability. See Apple’s encrypted RCS guidance and Google’s announcement on cross-platform encrypted RCS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you cannot get a clear RCS status
- On iPhone, verify the iOS version and ask the provider whether it supports RCS on iPhone in your region.
- On Android, review RCS status in Google Messages and check the conversation’s send-status wording.
- If either participant does not have RCS available, SMS/MMS may be used instead.
Apple describes RCS as a network-provided service, and provider support varies; a universal carrier list or a switch to a different plan cannot be assumed from the settings screen.
