Use Sentry for confirmed near-Earth objects and Scout for newly detected, still-unconfirmed candidates. A listing means that at least one trajectory still compatible with the observations could intersect Earth; it does not mean an impact is predicted.
Early impact probabilities often disappear when additional observations improve the orbit. Read the probability, observation span, event date, Torino and Palermo ratings, and estimated diameter together, then check the live record again. A screenshot or an old headline can describe a risk that no longer exists.

Start with the asteroid’s exact designation
Do not begin with a nickname, a clipped headline or a social-media description. Copy the exact designation shown in the report. Similar-looking designations can refer to different objects, and risk pages are tied to the designation in the catalog.

Record when the report was published and when you checked the official page. Impact listings are updated as new observations arrive, so the timestamp is part of the evidence. If you cannot identify the designation, you cannot reliably verify the claim.

Decide whether the object is confirmed
A confirmed near-Earth object has an orbit good enough for long-term monitoring in Sentry. A newly detected candidate may still have too few observations for that treatment; Scout provides the preliminary, short-term assessment. Once the object is confirmed, long-term monitoring moves to Sentry.
Use the right official monitoring system
| System | Objects covered | Stated time horizon | What it provides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sentry | Confirmed near-Earth objects | Potential impacts over the next 100 years | Continuous scans of the current asteroid catalog and published impact-risk cases |
| Scout | Newly detected, unconfirmed candidates | The next few days and weeks | A preliminary assessment while observations are still being collected |
Sentry’s 100-year horizon is the system’s stated search period for confirmed objects; it is not a promise that every possible future event can be predicted with equal precision. Scout’s days-to-weeks window is deliberately shorter because an unconfirmed object’s orbit can change substantially as its observation arc grows.
What a risk-list entry actually means
NASA/JPL CNEOS describes an asteroid’s orbit as an elliptical path around the Sun that best fits the available observations. A short observation arc can be fitted by many slightly different paths. Together, those paths form an uncertainty region rather than a single perfectly known route.
Sentry searches that range of still-allowed orbits for Earth approaches. The best-fit, or nominal, orbit may miss Earth while another orbit inside the uncertainty region intersects it. That is how an object can appear on a risk list even when the most likely single path is not an impact path.
The listing therefore means “an impact trajectory has not yet been ruled out by the observations.” It does not mean “the asteroid will hit.” CNEOS says the overwhelmingly most likely outcome for a newly listed near-Earth object is that further observations improve the orbit and remove the object from the risk page.

Why the first warning can look worse than the later assessment
When the arc is short, the uncertainty region is broad. A small portion of that broad region may pass through Earth, producing a nonzero impact probability. Each additional observation constrains the orbit and usually contracts the region. If the remaining paths no longer reach Earth, the calculated probability falls to zero or the object is removed from the list.
This is normal orbital refinement, not evidence that an asteroid changed direction in space. The object follows one physical path; scientists are narrowing their estimate of which path it is.
How CNEOS calculates and updates risk
- Collect positions. Telescopes report where the object appears against the background sky at specific times. A few positions over a short interval leave many possible orbits.
- Fit an orbit. CNEOS finds the elliptical solar orbit that best matches the available observations. The fit includes uncertainty because measurements are not exact and the arc may be short.
- Represent the allowed alternatives. The system evaluates the region of orbital solutions that remain compatible with the data, not only the nominal solution.
- Search future encounters. For confirmed objects, Sentry propagates those possible orbits and looks for Earth approaches during its stated 100-year horizon. For unconfirmed objects, Scout performs a preliminary search over days to weeks.
- Calculate risk quantities. If some allowed trajectories intersect Earth, the system reports an impact probability and supporting values such as the possible event date, estimated size and rating scales.
- Recompute when observations arrive. New measurements can move, narrow or eliminate the impact corridor. The live page, not an old article, is the current assessment.
Read the Sentry record as a set of connected clues
No single field answers whether an asteroid is dangerous. Use the observation history to judge how constrained the orbit is, then interpret the probability and consequences in that context.
| Field | What it tells you | How to read it responsibly |
|---|---|---|
| Observation span (arc) | How long the object has been tracked | A longer arc generally gives the orbit more constraint; a very short arc leaves more alternatives. |
| Observation count | How many reported positions support the solution | More observations can help, but their timing and quality also matter; count alone is not a guarantee. |
| Cumulative impact probability | The modeled chance across the listed possible impact dates | It is a result of the current observations and orbit model, not a certainty statement. |
| Possible impact date | When an allowed trajectory would intersect Earth | Read it with the probability and the date on which the page was checked. |
| Maximum Torino rating | Public-facing combination of likelihood and consequences | The rating is an integer from 0 to 10 and does not include how much time remains. |
| Palermo rating | Technical comparison with the background impact hazard | It is intended for specialist comparison, including cases whose Torino rating is 0. |
| Estimated diameter | An approximate size inferred from available observations | When reflectivity (albedo) is unknown, CNEOS describes typical diameter accuracy as within a factor of two. |
Probability is not a precise promise
CNEOS cautions that an individual tabulated impact probability can be inaccurate by a factor of a few and occasionally by a factor of ten or more. That warning does not make the calculation useless; it tells you not to treat a displayed value as a measurement with many reliable decimal places. The value is conditional on the current observations and model.
For example, a change from one small percentage to another may reflect ordinary orbit updates rather than a sudden physical increase in danger. Report the value exactly as shown, include the date and time you checked it, and avoid rounding it into a more dramatic headline.

Diameter estimates have their own uncertainty
An asteroid’s brightness depends on both its size and how much sunlight its surface reflects. If the albedo is unknown, the diameter estimate can be off by about a factor of two according to the Sentry risk-table description. Use “estimated” or “approximately,” and do not turn that figure into an exact width.
Understand the Torino Scale without overreacting
The Torino Scale is the public communication scale. It runs from 0 to 10 and uses color coding. It combines the likelihood of an impact with the consequences that an impact of the estimated size could produce, but it does not account for the time remaining before a possible encounter.
Torino 0
Level 0 means the chance of an impact is zero or effectively zero. An object can still be tracked as a near-Earth asteroid; the score simply indicates no meaningful impact concern under the current assessment.
Torino 1
Level 1 describes a routine close approach with an extremely unlikely collision and no cause for public concern. New observations often move a level-1 object to level 0. A level 1 is not a forecast that a collision is developing.
Levels above 1
A higher number represents a more exceptional combination of possible impact likelihood and consequences. It still must be read with the current probability, possible event date, observation arc and new measurements. The scale is a communication aid, not a countdown clock or a guarantee of impact.

Use the Palermo Scale for technical context
The Palermo Scale is designed for specialists comparing potential impact scenarios. It combines the event probability and the estimated impact energy relative to the background hazard from naturally occurring impacts. Because it is a relative technical scale, it can provide useful distinctions even when an object’s Torino rating is 0.
Do not translate a Palermo value directly into a public danger label. For a general reader, its main use is to add context when comparing two entries that have similar public ratings. The current probability, observation quality and possible date remain essential.
Why an asteroid’s score can change from one day to the next
The usual reason is better information. New positions extend the observation arc and reduce the set of orbits that fit the data. A possible Earth-intersecting path can then be excluded, causing the probability and rating to fall. In less common cases, new data can temporarily increase a calculated probability by shifting which alternatives remain allowed.
The CNEOS account of 2024 YR4 illustrates this evolution. After discovery, Sentry identified a possible impact in 2032. As observations accumulated, the orbit became more accurately constrained and the predicted uncertainty region narrowed. The example is useful for understanding changing evidence; it should not be presented as a current warning about that object.

A step-by-step check for a viral asteroid report
- Copy the exact designation. Take it from the original report, observatory notice or headline. Keep the complete designation rather than a shortened nickname.
- Open the live Sentry risk table. Use Sentry if the object is confirmed as a near-Earth object. Search for the designation and open its current details.
- Use Scout when confirmation is pending. If the report describes a newly detected candidate and it is not in Sentry, check Scout’s preliminary assessment instead of assuming that no page means no risk.
- Check the observation span and count. A short arc explains why several trajectories may still be possible. These fields provide essential context for any probability.
- Read the possible date and cumulative probability together. Record the value as displayed and note when you checked it. Do not convert a modeled probability into “likely” or “certain” without explaining the uncertainty.
- Check Torino and Palermo separately. Use Torino for the public communication level and Palermo for technical comparison. Neither replaces the underlying probability and orbit information.
- Review the size estimate cautiously. Keep the factor-of-two limitation in mind when albedo is unknown. A diameter estimate is not an exact measurement.
- Recheck the live record. Return to Sentry or Scout when the story is updated or after additional observations. Do not rely on a cached page, screenshot or yesterday’s social post.
How to compare two asteroid assessments
If two objects are being discussed at once, compare like with like and use the same checking time. The following axes prevent a dramatic but incomplete comparison.
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative impact probability | What value is shown now, and is it rising, falling or being removed as observations arrive? | It is the central modeled risk quantity, but it carries the uncertainty stated by CNEOS. |
| Maximum Torino rating | Which object has the higher public rating, and what consequences are associated with the scenario? | Torino combines likelihood and consequences, while omitting time remaining. |
| Palermo rating | How do the technical scores compare with the background impact hazard? | It provides specialist context that Torino may not show. |
| Observation count and span | Which orbit has been supported by more observations over a longer interval? | These are clues to how tightly the orbit is constrained. |
| Estimated size | What approximate diameter is listed, and is unknown albedo widening the estimate? | Potential consequences depend partly on size, but the estimate may be uncertain by about a factor of two. |
A higher value on one axis does not automatically make an object the greater overall threat. For example, an object with a larger estimated diameter but a much smaller probability is not directly comparable to a smaller object with a higher probability without considering both quantities and the dates involved.
Common mistakes and the correction for each
- “It is on Sentry, so it will hit.” A listing records trajectories that remain possible; it is not an impact prediction.
- “The nominal orbit misses Earth, so the listing is wrong.” Sentry evaluates the full uncertainty region, which can include a different Earth-intersecting orbit.
- “A nonzero probability is proof of danger.” It is a model result based on current observations and can disappear as the orbit is refined.
- “The biggest number is the whole story.” Probability, event date, observation arc, Torino, Palermo and size must be read together.
- “Torino 1 means an impact is becoming likely.” Level 1 is a routine close approach with an extremely unlikely collision and no public cause for concern.
- “Palermo is the public warning scale.” Palermo is a specialist relative-hazard measure; Torino is the public-facing scale.
- “The diameter is exact.” Unknown reflectivity can make the estimate uncertain by about a factor of two.
- “A screenshot is current.” Risk pages change; always check the live entry and note the timestamp.
- “Scout and Sentry are interchangeable.” Scout handles unconfirmed candidates over days to weeks; Sentry handles confirmed objects over a 100-year search horizon.
What to do when a headline sounds urgent
Do not infer an emergency from a headline alone. First verify the designation and current status. If the object is an unconfirmed candidate, Scout’s short-term result may change quickly. If it is confirmed, Sentry’s current details show whether any impact-compatible trajectories remain.
For ordinary readers, the useful action is careful verification and monitoring of the official record. The evidence described here does not support buying a telescope, model, printed manual or preparedness product to determine an asteroid’s risk. Those items do not substitute for the orbit calculations on the CNEOS pages.
Limits you should state when reporting a result
- Time horizon: Sentry’s stated search period is 100 years for confirmed objects; Scout’s preliminary window is days to weeks for unconfirmed candidates.
- Model uncertainty: An individual tabulated probability may be inaccurate by a factor of a few and occasionally by a factor of ten or more.
- Size uncertainty: When albedo is unknown, the estimated diameter is typically accurate only within a factor of two.
- Changing evidence: New observations can remove an object from the risk list or alter its probability and rating.
- Scope of a listing: A possible impact is a trajectory still compatible with observations, not a statement that an impact will occur.
These qualifications are not footnotes to hide. Put them next to the number or rating you report so readers do not mistake a provisional calculation for a certainty.
A concise way to explain the result
A responsible explanation names the object, the system checked, the timestamp, the current probability and rating, and the observation context. It then explains whether the object is confirmed or still being assessed by Scout. For example: “The current Sentry entry for [designation] lists a possible encounter on [date] with a modeled probability of [value]. The object has [observation context], and the Torino rating is [level]. This is an allowed trajectory under the present orbit uncertainty, not a prediction that an impact will happen; the page may change as observations arrive.” Replace the bracketed text only with values copied from the live record.
That format keeps the central distinction clear: asteroid-risk pages describe what the observations still allow, while continuing observations determine whether those possibilities remain.
