A higher benchmark score is not enough to show that an AI agent has become more capable. Check whether the gain carries over to tasks that were kept out of development and tuning. If scores rise on familiar tasks while performance on held-out tasks stalls or falls, benchmark overfitting is a plausible explanation—not a verdict by itself.
What counts as evidence of improvement?
Improvement means more than getting better at the cases an agent or its developers have already seen. A benchmark score describes performance under a particular task set and evaluation setup. To support a broader capability claim, the gain should transfer to independent tasks that represent the intended use.

Karl Cobbe and colleagues cautioned that using the same environments for training and testing says relatively little about an agent’s ability to generalize. In their words, “This would be like testing on your training set in supervised learning!” OpenAI’s account of their reinforcement-learning work explains the problem.

For every agent version, report results on both the tasks used during development and a separate set that was not used to tune the agent, its prompts, tools, or scaffold. Compare the difference between those results across versions.

- Both scores rise: The result is consistent with improvement that transfers, though the strength of the claim still depends on task diversity and evaluation quality.
- Familiar-task scores rise, held-out scores do not: The growing gap is a reason to investigate benchmark-specific overfitting.
- Held-out scores fall: The change may have harmed generalization, or the evaluation conditions may have changed; inspect the setup before drawing a conclusion.
A widening gap is evidence to investigate, not proof of overfitting. Scores can also be affected by noisy tasks, invalid instructions or scoring, and changes in resources or system configuration.
Keep the test set independent
Do not repeatedly tune against the set used to make the final improvement claim. Once developers use test results to make choices, those tasks are no longer an untouched check. Reserve a final set for evaluation, or use procedurally generated or periodically refreshed tasks to produce novel cases. The generation process still needs to represent the intended task distribution; novelty alone does not make a test valid.
OpenAI’s Procgen Benchmark illustrates the principle in reinforcement learning: it uses distinct training and test levels across 16 environments to measure sample efficiency and generalization. That work motivates the evaluation design, but its findings are not a direct result about every language-model agent domain.

Use the numbers as examples, not universal cutoffs
In a CoinRun experiment, substantial overfitting appeared with fewer than 4,000 training levels and was still detectable at 16,000. Those figures belong to that particular reinforcement-learning experiment; they are not thresholds for deciding whether a coding, research, or computer-use agent is overfitting. The same study describes a training budget of 256 million timesteps and averages over 10,000 episodes, further illustrating how closely results depend on the experimental setup. The study’s account provides that context.
Procgen’s article also describes experiments using training sets from 100 to 100,000 levels and a budget of 200 million timesteps for its calibrated environments. These are design and experiment details, not recommended budgets or general standards for other agent benchmarks. Procgen’s benchmark description explains its focus on sample efficiency and generalization.
Check whether the gain survives different tasks
A broad claim such as “the agent is better” needs more than repeated runs on variants of one familiar task. Test across meaningfully different task families, environments, and conditions that reflect the claim being made. Report results by family as well as in aggregate so a strong result in one area cannot conceal a regression in another.

An agent is more than its underlying model. When comparing versions, record and keep comparable the agent scaffold, relevant resources, benchmark version, and evaluation protocol. If one version receives more compute, different tools, or a materially different scaffold, its score cannot be attributed to the model change alone without accounting for those differences.
MLE-bench evaluates agents using scaffolds on a collection of competitions and examines resource scaling and possible pretraining contamination. Its 2024 report says the best-performing tested setup—OpenAI’s o1-preview with AIDE scaffolding—reached at least Kaggle bronze level in 16.9% of competitions. That is a result for that specific setup, not a general performance estimate for agents. Read the MLE-bench report.

Audit the benchmark itself
A score is only as meaningful as the benchmark components that produce it. Check that instructions are clear and consistent, the environment behaves as intended, tools work and are available on comparable terms, reference trajectories are sound, and scoring matches the task objective. A flaw in any of these—or an interaction among them—can distort a result that otherwise looks precise.
The 2026 ICML paper AgentSuite: Toward More Reliable Agent Evaluation with a Component-Based Benchmark Auditing Pipeline identifies possible hidden flaws involving instructions, environments, tools, ground-truth trajectories, and evaluation protocols. Its component-based framing is useful when a score changes unexpectedly: investigate the setup, not only the agent.

- Define the claim. State which capabilities and task distribution the benchmark is intended to represent; avoid implying broad improvement from a narrow test.
- Separate development from evaluation. Keep tuning tasks distinct from held-out tasks and preserve a final set that is not repeatedly used to guide changes.
- Compare versions on both sets. Report familiar-task and held-out-task results for each version, along with the change in the gap.
- Cover task diversity. Include different task families and conditions relevant to the claim, and show where results vary.
- Record the system and conditions. Document the scaffold, resources, benchmark version, and evaluation protocol so readers can tell what actually changed.
- Audit benchmark components and contamination risk. Check instructions, environment, tools, references, scoring, and whether benchmark material may have appeared in training data.
The cited work supports held-out evaluation, task diversity, setup reporting, contamination investigation, and component auditing. It does not establish a universal minimum test-set size or score-gap cutoff. Those choices must fit the task and support appropriately qualified claims.
