Check your web server, hosting, CDN, or WAF request logs for documented crawler identifiers, then verify matching source IPs against the vendor’s published information where available. A user-agent match is a useful way to find candidates—not proof that the request came from the company it names.
Where to look for AI crawler requests
Request logs are the practical evidence for which paths were requested, when requests arrived, which source IPs they came from, and how your site responded. Start with the systems that handle your traffic: the origin web server, hosting provider, CDN, or web application firewall (WAF). A CDN or WAF may see requests that your origin logs do not, depending on how traffic is routed and what gets recorded.

Check the log-retention window and available fields before searching. Useful fields include timestamp, request path, HTTP status, source IP, and user-agent. If your logs omit source IPs or user-agent strings, look for those fields in another layer’s logs or analytics.

Filter or search the user-agent field for documented identifiers. These strings are discovery clues; crawler names and lists can change, so check the vendors’ current documentation rather than relying on a permanent list.

| Identifier | Documented purpose | How to interpret a match |
|---|---|---|
| GPTBot | OpenAI says it crawls content that may be used to train its generative AI foundation models. | A candidate training/data-collection crawler. Verify its source IP before attributing the request to OpenAI. OpenAI bot documentation |
| OAI-SearchBot | Used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results. | A search crawler, not the same as GPTBot. OpenAI says opting out of OAI-SearchBot prevents appearance in ChatGPT search results, although a site may still appear as a navigational link. OpenAI bot documentation |
| ChatGPT-User | Used for certain user-initiated actions; OpenAI says it is not an automatic web crawler. | A request associated with an individual user action, not evidence of automatic crawling. OpenAI says robots.txt may not apply to these requests. OpenAI bot documentation |
| ClaudeBot | Anthropic says it collects web content that could potentially contribute to training. | A candidate training/data-collection crawler. Anthropic crawler documentation |
| Claude-SearchBot | Used to search the web and improve search-result quality. | A search crawler, distinct from ClaudeBot. Anthropic crawler documentation |
| Claude-User | May access websites in response to individual user questions. | A user-triggered fetch, not automatically a training crawl. Anthropic crawler documentation |

Verify who sent a matching request
A user-agent is text supplied with a request, so it can be copied or falsified. Treat it as a filter for finding requests, not authentication. For each candidate, examine its source IP and consult the vendor’s official bot documentation for published IP ranges or verification guidance. OpenAI publishes bot IP resources; Anthropic says an IP on its published list indicates that the crawler is coming from Anthropic. OpenAI bot documentation · Anthropic crawler documentation
Compare the logged IP with the relevant vendor resource, and retain the timestamp, path, response status, and matched identifier so you can distinguish verified matches from unverified ones. If a vendor does not publish a verification method or range for the requester in question, the user-agent alone cannot establish the requester’s identity.
Interpret the crawler’s purpose before drawing conclusions
Not every AI-related request means that a system is collecting content for model training. The documented OpenAI and Anthropic identities distinguish between training/data collection, search indexing, and retrieval triggered by an individual user. Attribute only the purpose documented for the specific identifier, and do not treat a search or user-triggered request as proof of training use.
Rank #3
OpenAI describes GPTBot as a crawler for content that may be used in model training, OAI-SearchBot as supporting ChatGPT search, and ChatGPT-User as handling certain user actions. Anthropic makes parallel distinctions among ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, and Claude-User. These purpose labels help explain what a verified request is for; they do not tell you what happened to a particular page after it was fetched.
Use log analytics when manual review is too slow
For a small site or occasional checks, filtering existing logs may be enough. For higher request volumes, use your log platform’s search, saved filters, or reporting to group requests by identifier, source IP, path, time, and status. Cloudflare documents AI Crawl Control analytics as a way to summarize popular and known AI services, and its bot-detection documentation describes additional detection methods. Feature availability can depend on plan and configuration, so this is an optional route rather than a prerequisite. Cloudflare bot documentation · Cloudflare bot detection engines

Cloudflare notes that some services may not identify themselves with a user-agent; detection may instead use IP address or behavior. Its documented methods include signature matching, heuristics, and machine learning on eligible plans. Detection results therefore depend on the method and configuration in use, and are not a universal inventory of every AI-related visit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat a missing match does—and does not—tell you
If your search finds no known crawler identifiers, you have found no matching requests in the logs and fields you checked during their retained period. That does not prove that no AI system or agent accessed the site: the relevant request may be recorded elsewhere, have fallen outside retention, been filtered out, used an unfamiliar identifier, or not identified itself in the user-agent.

Keep robots.txt separate from monitoring. It communicates crawl preferences to bots that honor its directives; it is not a request log and does not bind every requester. Anthropic says its bots honor standard robots.txt directives, while Cloudflare cautions that robots.txt is not binding in general. To know what actually reached your site, examine request logs.
