That notice is the developer’s statement, not an independent forensic audit. To reach a defensible conclusion, match it against credits, developer posts, production documentation, and—especially for voices—consent or licensing records.
Keep three questions separate: what kind of AI was used, when the generation happened, and whether players encounter the output. Valve distinguishes content created during development and shipped with the game from content generated while the game is running. A screenshot, an unusually smooth voice, a detector score, or a missing disclosure cannot prove AI use by itself.

What Steam’s AI disclosure actually covers
Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey asks developers about “the use of AI in creating content that ships with your game, and is consumed by players.” Its examples include artwork, sound, narrative and localization. Valve also says that “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” In practice, a disclosure is aimed at player-facing output rather than every brainstorming session, autocomplete suggestion or internal experiment.
“Consumed by players” can include more than files inside the executable. Artwork on a store page, community-facing material and other published assets can be relevant when they are part of how a game is presented. A studio’s internal concept sketch that never shipped is a different case from an AI-made character portrait used in the product page or release build. Ask where the asset appeared, not merely whether an employee touched an AI tool.

Valve reviews disclosed AI output under the same content standards as non-AI output. Disclosure does not exempt a game from Steam’s rules, and the absence of a notice is not a certification that no AI was used.
Pre-generated content
Pre-generated content is made with AI assistance during development and then packaged with the release. Examples can include finished illustrations, textures, 3D models, interface elements, music or sound effects, dialogue, translations and other assets a player encounters without any generation taking place on the player’s machine.
Live-generated content
Live-generated content is produced by an AI system while the game is running. A game might create dialogue, images, quests or other material in response to player input. Developers must describe the guardrails used for this live generation. Those controls might concern the kinds of prompts accepted, moderation, output filtering or limits on what can be generated; do not assume that “live” means unrestricted.
The distinction matters: a title can use AI for a fixed set of assets, for interactive output, or for both. A game with a library of generated portraits is pre-generated even if its story is otherwise fixed. A companion that writes a new response during play is live-generated even when all other dialogue was scripted.
| Question | Pre-generated | Live-generated |
|---|---|---|
| When is output made? | During development, before the shipped build is assembled | During play, while the game is running |
| What does the player receive? | Fixed assets included in the game or its published materials | New output produced in response to gameplay or prompts |
| What should the disclosure explain? | Which shipped content used generative tools | Where generation appears, plus the controls or guardrails that limit it |
The policy wording was clarified during 2025 and 2026 to separate player-consumed shipped content from behind-the-scenes efficiency work. A store-page statement may therefore be narrower than a developer’s broader description of using AI internally. Read the exact notice rather than treating the word “AI” as a description of the entire production.
How to find and record a game’s disclosure
- Open the game’s Steam store page in a desktop or mobile browser.
- Use the browser’s find function and search for
AI,generativeandGenerated. Try each term because the page’s wording can vary. - Copy the complete disclosure, including any explanation beneath the heading. Do not rely on a shortened paraphrase.
- Mark whether the statement identifies pre-generated content, live-generated content, or both.
- Record the asset class named: art, sound or voice, narrative, localization, interface, marketing material, or another category. If the statement names particular assets, copy those details too.
- Note the date you viewed the page, then compare it with the game’s latest update notes. A disclosure can change when a developer adds, removes or replaces content.
Keep a simple evidence record: the page URL, access date, exact wording, screenshots or archived text, the game’s version and links to statements that explain the scope. This prevents a later edit from being mistaken for what players saw at launch. If the notice says “some artwork,” look for a follow-up identifying which artwork; do not silently expand that phrase to every visual asset.
If no AI language appears, the accurate conclusion is “no confirmed public disclosure as of [date].” That is different from “the game does not use AI.” A developer may have failed to disclose, may have used tools only for work outside the policy’s focus, or may have updated the page after you checked.

How to investigate AI-generated art
Start with the Steam statement, then look for independent details from the people who made the game. The goal is to establish both that a generative system was used and which assets reached players.
Strong evidence
- A developer names the AI tool or workflow and identifies the shipped images, textures, models, interface elements or promotional assets involved.
- The Steam disclosure and a developer statement agree about the type and scope of the assets.
- Project documentation supplies provenance, such as the human artist’s role, source material, revisions and the point at which generated material entered the production pipeline.
These sources can establish use without requiring a visual “tell.” A statement that an AI system produced concept art is not evidence that every final in-game texture was generated; scope still matters. Ask whether the output was a draft, a reference, a masked element, a final layer or a marketing image, and whether artists redrew or composited it.
Moderate evidence
Credits, production notes or an interview may say that assets were AI-assisted but leave the number, locations or degree of modification unclear. Record the claim as corroborated but limited. “AI-assisted environment concepts; final models not specified” is more precise than “the environments are AI-generated.” A credit to an AI vendor can show involvement without proving which files shipped.
Weak clues
Inconsistent hands, garbled lettering, repeating textures, sudden style changes, or a reverse-image-search match can justify further questions. None establishes who made an image or whether an AI system was involved. Human artists can make mistakes or combine stock and hand-created material, and generated output can be heavily redrawn. A reverse-image result may identify a visual reference rather than the production method.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check store and community artwork separately
Make a list of the places players encounter images: the executable, launcher, Steam capsule art, screenshots, trailers, community announcements and downloadable extras. A disclosure about marketing artwork does not automatically cover the game’s sprites, and a notice about in-game portraits does not answer how the capsule image was made. Compare each claim with the named asset class.
Why copyright status is a separate question
The U.S. Copyright Office said in its 2025 Part 2 report announcement that “The outputs of generative AI can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements.” It also explains that a human’s creative arrangement or modification can matter, while prompting alone is not enough. Copyrightability therefore does not prove or disprove AI use, and AI use does not automatically erase human authorship in a finished asset.
How to investigate AI-generated voices and sound
- Read the Steam disclosure for references to sound, voice, speech synthesis, cloning or live generation.
- Check the voice cast, localization and audio credits. Look for a named performer, a vendor, or an explicit “synthetic” or “text-to-speech” credit.
- Search the developer’s website, press kit, Kickstarter updates and patch notes for terms such as text-to-speech, voice cloning, synthetic performance, digital replica or a named voice provider.
- Look for consent, licensing and compensation language. A statement that a performer authorized a digital replica answers a rights question even when the resulting line sounds entirely natural.
- Compare the scope of the statement with what players hear. A developer may have used synthesis for temporary prototypes, minor non-player characters, accessibility output or one language rather than the principal cast.
Separate voice generation from other audio assistance. A tool might create a placeholder during development while the shipped performance comes from an actor. Conversely, a human actor’s recording might be transformed, cloned or extended for additional lines. Ask which voices, languages and lines were affected in the released version.

SAG-AFTRA says members should work under a union contract when a voice or likeness is digitally simulated and argues for consent and compensation. That position is useful context when evaluating whether a claimed synthetic performance was authorized; it is not a test for detecting the sound itself.
The Copyright Office’s work on digital replicas addresses realistic but false depictions in images, video and audio. Provenance and authorization therefore deserve separate attention from the subjective question of whether a recording “sounds like AI.” A natural-sounding file can still raise licensing issues, while an obviously synthetic voice can be legitimately licensed.
A robotic cadence or unusually clean delivery is only a lead. Human performances can be processed, edited, directed into an artificial style or assembled from ADR. Synthetic voices can also be cleaned and mixed until they sound natural. Do not identify a performer or accuse a studio solely from an audio clip.
How to investigate AI-assisted code
Code is the least observable category from a finished executable. Players can see the game’s behavior, but not whether a programmer wrote a function unaided, accepted an autocomplete suggestion, pasted generated code and rewrote it, or used no AI at all.
Evidence that can establish coding assistance
- An explicit developer statement naming an AI coding tool and describing where its output entered the product.
- A technical postmortem that explains the tool’s role, review process and limits.
- Repository history, build documentation or release notes that identify generated code and the human review performed before shipping.
A bug, unusual architecture, generic comment or familiar coding style cannot prove AI assistance. Even a project that used an AI assistant extensively may have shipped only code written, tested and substantially rewritten by humans. Conversely, polished code does not show that no assistant was used.

Questions to ask a developer
If code provenance matters, ask which tool was used, during what period, for which subsystems, and whether generated suggestions were retained. Clarify whether the statement concerns production code, test scripts, build tooling, documentation or brainstorming. “We used an assistant for autocomplete” is materially different from “the dialogue system was generated and shipped without review.”
Do not confuse internal assistance with player-facing content
Valve’s survey says ordinary development-efficiency gains are not the focus of its generative-AI section. If a developer says an assistant was used for brainstorming, autocomplete or debugging and that no generated player-facing content was shipped, preserve that distinction. Calling the entire game “AI-made” would overstate the evidence.

What AI detectors can—and cannot—tell you
Image, audio, video and text detectors can help locate material worth checking. They may flag compression artifacts, editing patterns or statistical features that merit a provenance question. Their output is not a final verdict.
A survey of multimedia-generation detection describes an active field with unresolved challenges, including changing models, post-processing, mixed human and generated material, and limited access to original files. A detector can miss generated work, flag human work, or disagree with another detector. Treat its result as a lead and preserve the model name, version, file used and date if you report it. Testing a screenshot recompressed by a storefront is not equivalent to testing an original production file.
A practical triangulation standard
- First-party disclosure: capture the exact Steam wording and identify whether it covers art, sound, narrative, localization, live generation or another category.
- Developer or publisher statement: find a direct explanation of the tool, workflow and affected assets.
- Credits or production documentation: verify the people, vendors, repositories or notes connected with the work.
- Technical or provenance evidence: use source files, metadata, version history, licensing records or a detector only as supporting material.
When only one weak signal exists, report the result as unconfirmed. When several independent sources agree on the same scope, you can describe it as strongly corroborated without claiming a forensic certainty the evidence does not provide. Independence matters: five posts repeating the same rumor are not five separate confirmations.
How to compare two Steam games fairly
Use the same questions for each title. This prevents a dramatic screenshot from receiving more weight than a documented disclosure. Compare equivalent versions and dates; one game’s page may have been updated after launch while another’s has not.
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Where AI appears | Art, voices or other sound, narrative, localization, code, marketing assets, or live player-facing generation |
| When generation happens | Pre-generated during development, live during play, or both |
| Player exposure | Whether output ships in the build, appears on the store or community page, or is generated interactively |
| Transparency | Exact Steam wording, named tools, named assets and changes in update history |
| Rights and provenance | Credited humans, voice consent or licensing, source records and evidence of human creative contribution |
| Confidence | Confirmed, strongly corroborated, plausible or unconfirmed, with the reason for the rating |
Suggested confidence labels
- Confirmed: a direct first-party statement identifies the use and its scope, with no material contradiction.
- Strongly corroborated: the Steam disclosure aligns with developer documentation or credits and supporting provenance.
- Plausible: multiple clues point in the same direction, but the developer has not established the claim or its scope.
- Unconfirmed: only a detector, visual or audio impression, rumor, reverse-image match or missing disclosure exists.
How common are disclosed uses?
In a 2025 analysis by Ichiro Lambe reported by PC Gamer, 7,818 Steam games had disclosed generative-AI use. That was about 7% of just under 115,000 games counted in the analysis. The same report said a little under 20% of games released in 2025 had disclosed such use, and that around 60% of the disclosures concerned visual assets.
These are dated counts of disclosures, not a census of every game that used AI. They can change as developers update store pages, as new releases appear and as the policy wording is applied to different asset types. The figures also do not show how much of a game’s final content was generated, how much was edited by humans, or whether a use involved live generation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReporting a careful conclusion
State the evidence and its limits in the same sentence. For example:
Best Value
- “The Steam page discloses pre-generated artwork, and the developer identifies the tool and the affected character portraits; this is confirmed for those portraits, not necessarily for every image in the game.”
- “The developer describes synthetic voices for minor characters and lists a licensing arrangement; the principal cast is credited to human performers.”
- “No Steam disclosure or developer statement was found as of 15 October 2026. Visual artifacts and a detector flag make AI use plausible, but it remains unconfirmed.”
- “The studio says an AI assistant was used for autocomplete and debugging, while no generated player-facing content was shipped. That supports a claim about development assistance, not that the game’s art or dialogue is AI-generated.”
A good report names the asset, the generation stage, the source and the date. It avoids turning an uncertain clue into an accusation and avoids treating a policy disclosure as proof of every rumor surrounding a game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the AI disclosure on a Steam page?
Open the store page and search for “AI,” “generative” and “Generated.” Copy the complete notice and record whether it describes pre-generated or live-generated content and which asset class it names.
Does a missing Steam disclosure prove a game used no AI?
No. It means there is no confirmed public disclosure as of the date you checked. It is not proof that no tool was used or that a later page revision will say the same thing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can visual glitches prove that game art is AI-generated?
No. Garbled text, odd hands, repeating textures and style changes are weak clues only. Confirm the claim with a developer statement, credits, production notes or provenance.
Can I prove a voice is AI-generated by listening to it?
Not reliably. Processing, ADR and direction can make a human performance sound synthetic, while edited synthetic speech can sound natural. Check credits, vendor information and consent or licensing statements.
Is AI-assisted code covered by Steam’s disclosure?
Valve focuses on AI-created content that ships with the game and is consumed by players, not ordinary efficiency gains. Direct developer documentation is the strongest way to establish coding assistance.
Are AI detectors reliable proof?
No. They can miss generated material, flag human work and disagree across models, especially after compression or editing. Preserve detector details and use the result only as a lead.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated AI?
Pre-generated output is made during development and shipped as fixed content. Live-generated output is created while the game runs in response to play or prompts; the developer should describe where it appears and what guardrails apply.
Does AI use mean an asset has no copyright protection?
Not automatically. The U.S. Copyright Office said in 2025 that human-determined expressive elements, creative arrangement or modification can support protection, while prompting alone is insufficient.
The Bottom Line
Start with the exact Steam disclosure, then verify its scope through developer statements, credits, production records and— for voices—consent or licensing information. Separate pre-generated assets, live player-facing generation and private coding assistance. Treat visual impressions, audio impressions, detector scores and missing notices as leads, not proof, and date every conclusion.
