Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Disable a startup app only after you know who made it, what it does, and what you would lose if it stopped running in the background. Use Windows or macOS’s built-in startup controls, change one entry at a time, and check the features you rely on after restarting. A “high impact” label in Windows Task Manager measures startup resource use—not whether an app is safe, essential, or malicious.
What “safe to disable” means
For startup troubleshooting, an app is a reasonable candidate to test disabling when you can identify it, do not rely on its background functions, and can restore it if something stops working. Disabling automatic startup is not the same as uninstalling the app; it generally prevents the app from launching automatically, but may affect features that depend on it running in the background.

No general list can certify every startup entry as safe to turn off. The exact app, its publisher, your operating-system version, and the features you use all matter.
Identify the startup entry before changing it
- Note its displayed name and publisher. Use the operating system’s startup list. An unfamiliar name, blank publisher, or high impact rating is not by itself proof of malware.
- Check the developer’s official site, documentation, or app settings. Look for what the app does and whether it provides syncing, notifications, backups, peripheral support, or other background features.
- Ask what would stop working. If you depend on a feature, keep the app enabled or use the app’s own settings to change its startup behavior.
- Pause if the role is still unclear. Ask the software publisher or, on a managed work or school device, your administrator to identify it before changing it.
Windows: check impact, then use a built-in startup control
Windows offers startup controls in Settings and Task Manager. Task Manager’s impact label is a performance measure based on CPU time and disk I/O during startup; it does not rate trustworthiness or necessity. Microsoft’s thresholds are:
#1 Best Overall
- ULTRA POWER - SUPPORTS THE LATEST RYZEN 9000 PROCESSORS IN HIGH PERFORMANCE - The MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI employs a 14 Duet Rail Power System (80A, SPS) VRM for the AMD B850 chipset (AM5, Ryzen 9000 / 8000 / 7000) with Core Boost architecture
- FROZR GUARD - Premium cooling features such as 7W/mK MOSFET thermal pads, extra choke thermal pads and an Extended Heatsink; Includes chipset heatsink, EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II, and a Combo-fan (for pump & system) header (3A)
- DDR5 MEMORY, PCIe 5.0 x16 SLOT - 4 x DDR5 DIMM SMT slots enable extreme memory overclocking speeds (1DPC 1R, 8400+ MT/s); 1 x PCIe 5.0 x16 SMT slot (128GB/s) with Steel Armor II supports cutting-edge graphics cards
- QUADRUPLE M.2 CONNECTORS - Storage options include 2 x M.2 Gen5 x4 128Gbps slots, 1 x M.2 Gen4 x4 64Gbps slot and 1 x M.2 Gen4 x2 32Gbps slot; Features EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II to prevent thermal throttling and EZ M.2 Clip II for EZ DIY experience
- CONNECTIVITY - Network hardware includes a full-speed Wi-Fi 7 module with Bluetooth 5.4 & 5Gbps LAN; Rear ports include USB 20G Type-C and 7.1 USB High Performance Audio with Audio Boost 5 (supports S/PDIF output)
| Task Manager label | Startup CPU time | Startup disk I/O |
|---|---|---|
| High | More than 1 second | More than 3 MB |
| Medium | 300–1,000 ms | 300 KB–3 MB |
| Low | Under 300 ms | Under 300 KB |
These are Microsoft’s product thresholds; the cited guidance does not state a publication year. They help indicate resource use, not whether an entry can be removed without side effects.
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Names can vary by Windows version.
- Review the app name and publisher, and check the developer’s documentation or settings to understand its function.
- If the entry is identified and you do not need its background features, switch it off in Settings or select it in Task Manager and choose Disable. Microsoft’s instructions say, “Select Disable to prevent the app from starting automatically.” (Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions.)
- Restart and check the features you care about. If something stops working, return to the same startup list and re-enable the entry.
Mac: remove login items as a reversible test
On macOS, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance is to record the login-item list, remove items to test, restart, then add items back one at a time if the test resolves the problem. The exact controls can vary by macOS version; look for Login Items & Extensions in System Settings.

- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Record or photograph the items so you can restore the original setup.
- Remove one identified item as a test, then restart and check the app or feature it supports.
- If a needed feature is affected, add the item back. If you are troubleshooting a problem and removing an item helps, add items back one at a time to identify which one is involved, following Apple’s login-item guidance.
When not to treat this as routine cleanup
- You cannot identify the entry: leave it enabled until the publisher or device administrator can explain its role.
- The item is unexpected or the computer behaves suspiciously: a startup toggle is not a malware scan. Follow trusted-source security guidance and, on Windows, run an updated Microsoft Defender scan as described in Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance.
- You are considering a clean boot, service changes, or advanced boot settings: these are troubleshooting measures, not ordinary startup-list cleanup. Microsoft warns that a clean boot may temporarily remove functionality and that changing advanced options in System Configuration can make the computer unusable; its guidance says to use the utility for such changes only with Microsoft support-engineer guidance. See Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.
Startup controls are not a security verdict
Microsoft says Windows desktop apps do not use Windows privacy permission prompts and do not appear on the privacy pages that manage app access. So the presence or absence of an app in those privacy controls does not establish whether its startup entry is safe. If you suspect unwanted software, verify the source and use security tools rather than relying on startup settings alone. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows app permissions.
Why caution matters on a Mac
Apple warns that disabling a StartupItems item installed by an app may affect that app’s performance: “If the item was installed by an app, this option may affect the app’s performance.” Treat removal as a test and check the feature the app provides. The warning appears in Apple’s startup-item guidance.
