How to Tell Whether a Mechanics Tool Set Includes the Socket Sizes You Need

Piece count won't tell you whether a set has your sizes. Here is how to match fastener size, measurement system, depth and drive size against a set's contents list.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the set’s itemized contents list and match it, size by size, against the fasteners your job requires. Check four things: the measurement system (metric or SAE), the exact size, the depth (shallow or deep), and the drive size that has to fit your ratchet. The piece count on the box tells you none of this.

Two different “sizes” on every socket

A socket carries two size measurements, and they answer different questions.

  • Working size is the opening that fits the fastener. It is labeled in millimeters (for example 10 mm) or in fractions of an inch (for example 3/8 in).
  • Drive size is the square hole that accepts the ratchet, usually 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 inch.

A 3/8-inch-drive socket can have a 10 mm working size. Contents lists mix both kinds of number, so read them carefully. For example, CRAFTSMAN’s listing for the CMMT12134 groups sockets by drive, measurement system and shallow or deep type, and it lists 1/4-, 3/8- and 1/2-inch-drive ratchets separately.

A step-by-step check

  1. Identify the fasteners. Use reliable service information for your vehicle or equipment, or inspect the hardware before you start. No universal size list exists. The sizes depend on the vehicle, model year, equipment and task.
  2. Write down each size with its system. Record “13 mm” or “1/2 in” exactly. Do not treat metric and SAE sizes as interchangeable, even when they are close.
  3. Compare against the full contents list. Find the manufacturer’s itemized list, not the marketing bullet. A range label such as “4–14 mm” does not guarantee every size in between is present, so look for the specific size.
  4. Match the drive size. Confirm the drive of the socket holding your size, and confirm your ratchet or other driver accepts it. An adapter solves a connection mismatch, but it cannot supply a missing size.
  5. Check depth. Use a deep socket for recessed fasteners or nuts on long studs. Shallow sockets suit tight clearance. Confirm the needed size exists in the needed depth, because shallow and deep sockets are separate inventory.
  6. Check specialty items only if the job needs them. These include spark-plug sockets, extensions, universal joints and bit sockets.

Why piece count misleads

Piece counts vary widely, and they can include bits, wrenches, keys, ratchets and accessories as well as sockets. Two sets with similar counts can cover very different sizes. Use the itemized contents instead.

What real contents lists look like

These examples show how much sets differ. They illustrate how to read a list and are not recommendations. Manufacturers can change contents, so treat the live listing for any model as authoritative.

Set Drives Listed socket coverage
CRAFTSMAN CMMT12134 (189 pieces, SAE and metric) 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 in 1/4-in drive: shallow SAE 5/32–9/16 in and metric 4–14 mm. 3/8-in drive: shallow metric 7–21 mm and deep metric 10–19 mm. 1/2-in drive: SAE and metric sockets plus specialty pieces.
GEARWRENCH 80948 (76 pieces, 12-point) 1/4 and 3/8 in 1/4-in drive: standard and deep metric 4–12 mm, SAE 3/16–7/16 in. 3/8-in drive: standard and deep metric 13–19 mm, SAE 1/2–1 in. The document notes that specifications may change without notice.
DEWALT DWMT45007 (200 pieces, SAE and metric) 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 in Itemized contents not confirmed here. Check the live listing before relying on any particular size.

Two lessons follow. In the GEARWRENCH set, a 1/4-inch-drive ratchet reaches only up to 12 mm in metric, while 13 mm and larger sit on the 3/8-inch drive. A single size therefore depends on the drive you can use. In the CRAFTSMAN set, deep sockets are listed for 3/8-inch-drive metric sizes from 10 to 19 mm, so a deep 8 mm socket would not be found on that drive.
