Treat a leaderboard entry or chart as a snapshot until you can inspect the benchmark, evaluation code and grader, task and data version, metric, configuration, and relevant software and runtime conditions.
What a benchmark score does—and does not—establish
A score reports what happened when a system was evaluated using a particular procedure. The harness—the code and environment that prepare inputs, run the system, and judge outputs—helps define that procedure. Change the task selection, grader, configuration, or execution environment and the score may describe a different evaluation, even if the benchmark name is unchanged.

A documented, repeatable recipe makes a result easier to inspect and rerun. It does not establish that the tasks represent real-world work, that the metric captures what matters, or that the result generalizes beyond the benchmark. The 2024 NeurIPS Datasets and Benchmarks Track paper calls for benchmark authors to document construction, task rationale, metrics, assumptions, and limitations. It also states: “To ensure reproducibility and scrutiny [77, 25, 10], a benchmark should provide working evaluation code, and make its evaluation data, prompts, or dynamic test environment accessible.” NeurIPS Datasets and Benchmarks Track (2024)
Why the harness changes what the score means
Tasks, environment, and grading are part of the evaluation
SWE-bench’s documented process illustrates the dependencies: prepare task images, apply a patch, run the repository’s test suite, grade whether the issue is resolved, and report metrics. The result therefore depends not only on the submitted system, but also on the selected tasks, environment, tests, and grader. See the SWE-bench Evaluation Harness Reference for its current procedure and options; operational details can change.

Execution context can affect a run
NVIDIA’s cuML benchmark documentation shows the kind of context that can travel with an output: command, Python and platform details, cuML and Git identity, benchmark configuration, hardware, and installed environment packages. It recommends JSON output for regression tracking and reproducibility. Its documented example output is illustrative, not evidence of a general reproducibility rate. See NVIDIA cuML Benchmark Suite for the current fields and schema.
A saved recipe still needs a rerun
Google Research’s VeriHarness README describes checking out benchmark code at commits against which graders were validated, refusing to score when a judge is unreachable, and warning when re-grading archived baselines fails to reproduce their archived scores. These are safeguards in that project, not universal rules, but they show why a pinned configuration alone is insufficient: record whether a rerun succeeded and disclose mismatches. See the VeriHarness README.
What to check before trusting a reported score
Use this checklist to decide whether a score is inspectable and whether a comparison is fair:
- Benchmark and coverage: name, version or revision, task set, split, and inputs.
- Evaluation and grading: evaluation-code and grader revisions, including any remote judge or model and its relevant settings.
- Metric: definition, aggregation method, and uncertainty or statistical significance where applicable.
- Data and prompts: relevant data, prompts, and environment identifiers, with access instructions where possible.
- System and configuration: model or system version and settings.
- Execution context: runtime, dependencies, hardware, and software versions that could affect the result.
- Run record: command or reproducible procedure, date, and run identifier.
- Exceptions and reruns: failed, skipped, or non-reproducing cases, reported explicitly rather than silently omitted or treated as zero.
This is a practical synthesis of criteria and examples in the SWE-bench harness reference, cuML benchmark documentation, the 2024 NeurIPS paper, and the VeriHarness README; it is not a universal formal standard. For a specific benchmark, follow its published evaluation instructions.

How to compare two benchmark scores
Compare the conditions, not just the headline numbers. Check each axis below; if a material one differs, describe the results as coming from different evaluation conditions rather than assuming an apples-to-apples comparison.
| Axis | What should match or be disclosed |
|---|---|
| Task coverage | Benchmark revision, task set, split, and inputs |
| Scoring | Grader code and version, metric, aggregation, and judge configuration |
| Execution | Environment, dependencies, runtime, hardware, and relevant software versions |
| System under test | Model or system revision and configuration |
| Repeatability | Whether a rerun reproduces the result, and how variance or mismatches are reported |
There is no universal acceptable score difference across benchmarks in these sources. A difference is interpretable only in light of the benchmark’s metric, run variability, and documented conditions.

What a green checkmark cannot tell you
The sources provide methodological criteria and examples of metadata, not a statistic quantifying how often unpinned green scores fail to reproduce. A single score therefore cannot support a general claim about reproducibility prevalence. Nor does successful reproduction validate a benchmark’s relevance or prove that its metric measures the outcome readers care about. Those questions require evidence about task design, assumptions, and limitations as well as repeatable execution.
