How to Tell Whether a Game Is Challenging or Just Poorly Explained

A game can be difficult without being confusing. This diagnostic guide shows how to tell whether failure reflects demanding execution or missing goals, rules, controls, and feedback.

A fair challenge tells you enough to form a plan, attempt it, understand the result, and improve. A poorly explained game withholds the goal, control, rule, or feedback needed to make a meaningful attempt. The difference is not simply whether you fail: it is whether each attempt produces usable information, and which ability the game is actually testing.

The difference between challenge and confusion

An intentionally difficult game can demand precise timing, fast reactions, memory, navigation, resource management, puzzle solving, or long-term strategy. It does not have to be easy, generous, or accessible to every player. It does need to make the relevant situation legible enough that a player can understand what is being attempted and why an attempt succeeded or failed.

A game is more likely to be poorly explained when the player cannot identify the immediate goal, does not know which action is relevant, cannot infer the rule governing the situation, or receives feedback that does not distinguish among possible causes of failure. In that case, repeating the attempt may add frustration without adding knowledge.

This is a diagnostic, not a universal verdict. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 states, “The “difficulty” of a game is a subjective construct.” Difficulty emerges from the relationship between a player’s abilities and the barriers a game presents. The same enemy pattern, time limit, memory task, or control scheme can be manageable for one person and inaccessible to another.

What an intentional challenge usually provides

  • A recognizable objective or success condition.
  • Controls and mechanic interactions introduced before they become essential, or made discoverable through safe experimentation.
  • Feedback that connects an input to an outcome: a hit marker, animation, sound, state change, score change, or other meaningful response.
  • A stable rule set, so that a strategy that worked in one comparable situation has a reasonable chance of working again.
  • Enough information for the player to form and test a hypothesis, even if execution remains demanding.

What poor explanation often looks like

  • The game presents a locked door, puzzle, or objective without communicating what counts as a solution.
  • An important control is never demonstrated, is mapped inconsistently, or is forgotten because there is no way to review it.
  • Several hidden rules could explain a failure, but the game gives no clue which one applies.
  • The player repeats the same action with no new information and cannot tell whether the problem is timing, positioning, equipment, an unseen prerequisite, or a bug.
  • The game increases punishment before the player has had a low-risk opportunity to learn the mechanic.

A six-question diagnostic

Use these questions when a section feels unfair. Answer them about the specific encounter or task rather than assigning a single hard or easy label to the whole game.

1. Can you state the immediate goal?

Describe what you are trying to accomplish in one sentence: reach the exit, survive three waves, align the symbols, persuade a character, or retrieve an item. Include the success condition if you know it.

If you cannot state the goal, check the objective log, map, dialogue history, subtitles, and environmental signs. A game may intentionally delay a long-term plot explanation while still communicating the next action. If neither the interface nor the environment reveals what success looks like, the first problem is communication, not execution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Goals can also be technically visible but practically ambiguous. “Find a way through” may be appropriate in an exploration game, but the surrounding space should still indicate which doors, surfaces, characters, or tools are relevant. A puzzle can be mysterious without being arbitrary.

2. Can you identify the relevant action?

Once the goal is clear, determine what kind of action could advance it. Is the game asking you to jump, parry, combine items, wait, listen, read a pattern, or change equipment? The control may be obvious in isolation but unclear in context.

Good onboarding does not require a long manual. Apple’s Onboarding for Games guidance recommends short, clear, progressive instruction, followed by an opportunity for the player to demonstrate what was learned. A safe room, low-stakes encounter, or optional practice area lets players connect an input with a result before failure becomes expensive.

When a mechanic is intentionally hidden, the game should provide discoverable affordances: a character comments on a suspicious object, a previous animation models the move, or a visual pattern repeats. Discovery can be challenging; guessing among unrelated actions is merely opaque.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Do you know which rule applies?

Many failures come from confusing an unknown rule with poor execution. Ask what the game appears to require: a particular weapon type, a sequence, a line of sight, a timing window, a status effect, a weight limit, or a relationship value.

Test one variable at a time. If an attack fails, change distance without changing equipment. If a puzzle does nothing, interact with one element and observe whether its state changes. If every variable changes at once, the result cannot tell you which hypothesis was correct.

A rule can be strict without being hidden. A boss that can only be damaged during a visible glow is demanding if the glow is consistent and the damage response is clear. The same boss is poorly explained if identical attacks sometimes work and sometimes fail with no discernible difference.

4. Does feedback explain the outcome?

Feedback should answer at least one useful question: Did the input register? Did it affect the target? Was the timing wrong? Is the object inactive until another condition is met? A sound, animation, meter, hit reaction, or message can provide this information.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Separate failure of execution from failure of interpretation. Missing a narrow parry window after seeing a clear attack cue is an execution challenge. Pressing the correct button at the apparent cue but receiving no reaction, with no indication of whether the cue was real, is a feedback problem.

Feedback also includes success. If a puzzle solution produces no visible state change, players may repeat a correct action because they assume it failed. Conversely, a dramatic animation that does not alter the game state can create a false impression that progress was made.

5. Are you learning after attempts?

A useful attempt changes your understanding. You may learn that an enemy follows a three-hit pattern, that a floor panel must be weighted, or that a shortcut opens only after a certain event. You may still fail, but the next attempt can be more informed.

Repeated failure with no new information is a warning sign. This is a practical heuristic rather than a measured pass/fail test: Apple’s onboarding guidance emphasizes progressive teaching and contextual help, while GDC’s discussion of human error distinguishes errors that are part of play from errors created by poor usability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try writing down the hypothesis you are testing before an attempt. Afterward, record what changed. If you cannot identify any observation that would distinguish competing explanations, the game may need clearer feedback or you may need a reference that exposes a deliberately hidden rule.

6. Which ability is actually being tested?

Do not treat difficulty as one dimension. Microsoft’s guideline gives examples including precision aiming, button mashing, memory, time limits, and puzzles. A player might handle strategic planning but struggle with rapid alternating presses; another might react quickly but find spatial memory difficult.

Name the demand precisely:

  • Precision: placing a reticle, landing on a narrow platform, or selecting a small target.
  • Reaction and timing: responding within a short, consistent window.
  • Memory: recalling symbols, routes, attack patterns, or instructions.
  • Navigation: building a mental map, reading landmarks, or interpreting a compass.
  • Puzzle reasoning: identifying relationships, sequences, or transformations.
  • Combat or resource strategy: choosing targets, spacing, equipment, and when to spend limited supplies.

If one ability is a barrier, an option that changes that mechanic may improve access without removing every challenge. Treating difficulty as a single slider can hide the real issue.

Compare specific demands instead of calling a game “hard”

When comparing two games, or two sections of one game, describe the demand and the information available. The following framework avoids a misleading overall score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Dimension Demanding but legible More likely poorly explained Useful question
Goals and rules The objective and relevant constraints can be stated, even if the solution is difficult. The player cannot tell what counts as progress or which rule governs the situation. Could a player explain the task before attempting it?
Precision and reaction Cues are visible or audible, timing is consistent, and practice is possible. The timing window or required position is invisible, inconsistent, or contradicted by feedback. Can you identify the cue and reproduce the timing?
Memory and navigation Landmarks, notes, maps, or repeatable patterns support recall. Important information disappears and cannot be reviewed, or spaces look indistinguishable. Is the memory load an intended puzzle or an avoidable interface burden?
Puzzle and strategy Clues point toward a coherent solution and wrong moves reveal something. Several unrelated interpretations seem equally plausible and failure explains none of them. Does each attempt narrow the possibilities?
Feedback Inputs, hits, state changes, and failures produce interpretable responses. The game gives no response, a misleading response, or the same response for different causes. Can you tell why the outcome occurred?
Options and reminders Remappable controls, timing aids, reduced repetition, or reference screens target particular barriers. Only a global easy mode exists, or essential instructions cannot be revisited. Can the relevant demand be adjusted without changing unrelated parts?

GDC’s description of the session Flavors of Challenge emphasizes that there is no single difficulty lever; difficult games can combine gameplay and aesthetic elements. The table therefore describes dimensions, not a universal scoring system.

A practical test you can run as a player

  1. Pause and name the task. Read the current objective, inspect the environment, and state the immediate success condition in your own words.
  2. List the plausible actions. Include movement, interaction, equipment, dialogue, waiting, and any recently taught mechanic. Check the controls or reference screen instead of relying on memory.
  3. Find a low-cost experiment. Try the action where failure is reversible. Observe animation, sound, meters, enemy reactions, and changes in the environment.
  4. Change one variable. Alter timing, distance, target, item, or position, but not all of them at once. This turns a frustrating attempt into a test.
  5. State what you learned. If you can form a more accurate next attempt, the section is probably presenting a learnable challenge. If nothing distinguishes one attempt from another, seek clarification.
  6. Use available references. Reopen tutorials, control lists, codex entries, quest logs, subtitles, maps, and contextual hints. A reference section is not a concession; Apple specifically recommends contextual help for forgotten controls and concepts.
  7. Try an option that targets the demand. Adjust timing windows, aim assistance, repeated-input requirements, text size, camera behavior, or puzzle hints when the game offers them. Note which barrier changes.
  8. Ask another player to describe the task without coaching them. If they independently misunderstand the same goal, control, or rule, that is evidence of a communication problem. If they understand it but cannot execute it, the barrier may be the intended skill.

This procedure cannot prove intent. It helps separate a lack of knowledge from a lack of execution and gives you a concrete question to raise with the developer or community.

Why mistakes do not automatically mean bad design

Ben Lewis-Evans’s GDC 2018 session, To Err is to Play: Human Error and Game Design, describes both sides of the issue: “Unintended errors in game design can impact games by creating poor usability, but at the same time overcoming previous mistakes and errors that a game intentionally causes can be part of the challenge for players.”

An intentional error might be a misdirection in a mystery, a risky control scheme, a trap that teaches through consequences, or an enemy that exploits a predictable habit. The player is expected to make a mistake, recognize its cause, and adapt. The error becomes part of the game’s expressive language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An unintended usability error occurs when the interface causes an action the player did not mean to take, hides the state that matters, or makes the same input behave differently without warning. The distinction depends on whether the mistake is supported by the game’s rules and feedback, not on how annoyed the player feels.

Instruction does not have to mean a long tutorial

Instruction styles vary. Apple recommends short tutorials, gradually increasing complexity, a period of unguided play in which players demonstrate learning, and contextual help or a reference section. It warns, “If you assume knowledge that a player doesn’t have, they may feel discouraged and abandon the onboarding process.”

Some games teach through play: a safe environment introduces one interaction, then a controlled variation, then a consequence for ignoring it. A GDC tutorial session argues against walls of text and intrusive pop-ups in favor of teaching through the game’s actions. These approaches are not contradictory. The useful question is whether the player receives the information at the moment and level of detail needed.

A concise prompt can be better than a paragraph, but only if the prompt remains available when the mechanic returns later. A demonstration can be better than a label, but only if the player can see which part of the demonstration matters. Good instruction is progressive, contextual, and testable: it introduces a concept, lets the player use it, and provides evidence that the concept was understood.

How developers can tell the difference with player evidence

A single complaint, death count, or abandonment point cannot identify the cause of difficulty. The GDC 2024 session UX Summit: Difficult Games by Data and Design, presented by Lanie Dixon and Sebastian Long, describes combining play sessions, analytics, user research, QA, and feedback. Its session description concludes, “Only in combination can these approaches paint the full picture, directing teams to make confident and effective adjustments to difficulty balance.”

Observe the player’s interpretation before offering help

In a play session, ask the player to think aloud or explain what they believe the game wants. Record the moment at which their interpretation diverges from the intended rule. If they know the required action but mistime it, the issue differs from a case in which they spend ten minutes pursuing an impossible interaction.

Use analytics as a clue, not a diagnosis

High death rates, repeated reloads, long dwell times, or exits can indicate challenge, confusion, technical trouble, or a voluntary pause. Segment events by location, input method, difficulty option, and prior exposure to the mechanic. A spike is a place to investigate, not proof of a particular cause.

Ask QA to reproduce the confusion

Quality assurance can test whether a failure is consistent, whether feedback is missing, and whether a workaround depends on an undocumented sequence. Reproduction should include different controllers, display settings, accessibility options, and player skill levels where relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combine qualitative and quantitative signals

Player comments explain interpretation; sessions show behavior; telemetry shows scale and frequency; QA checks consistency. Each source has blind spots. Together they can reveal whether a difficult section is teaching a demanding mechanic or losing players before they discover it.

Adjust the specific barrier

If precision is the issue, consider aim assistance, a wider timing window, or clearer target states. If memory is the issue, add a reviewable reference or persistent landmarks. If navigation is the issue, improve map language or signposting. A global reduction in enemy health will not fix an undiscoverable rule.

What a published tutorial experiment does—and does not—show

The AtDELFI paper by Michael Cerny Green, Ahmed Khalifa, Gabriella A. B. Barros, Tiago Machado, Andy Nealen, and Julian Togelius was published for Foundations of Digital Games 2018. It describes generated tutorials for eight games in the General Video Game AI framework. The authors report that their graph-based approach appeared to work for simple arcade games, while more complex games might require higher-level understanding than individual mechanics.

This result concerns that prototype and evaluation. It does not provide a percentage of players who confuse poor explanation with difficulty, nor does it establish that one tutorial format works for every genre. It does support a useful caution: teaching isolated button-to-action relationships may not be enough when success depends on goals, strategy, or interactions among several systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When accessibility options clarify the diagnosis

Accessibility settings can reveal which demand is causing trouble. Microsoft’s Guideline 108 focuses on options that help players complete games despite differing abilities and recommends considering individual mechanics rather than treating difficulty as one undifferentiated setting.

For example, a player who understands a rhythm cue but cannot press rapidly may benefit from a reduced button-mashing requirement. A player who understands a puzzle but cannot retain a sequence may benefit from a persistent clue. A player who can plan a route but cannot read a crowded map may need clearer contrast or a different navigation aid.

Using an option does not prove that the original challenge was poorly designed, and declining an option does not prove that a failure was fair. It simply identifies the ability the section is asking for and lets the player decide which barriers are meaningful for them.

Limits of the diagnosis

  • Players bring different prior knowledge, motor abilities, language skills, hardware, and genre experience.
  • A game may intentionally conceal a goal or rule for narrative, mystery, or discovery, but it still needs a path by which attentive players can infer it.
  • Some failures combine causes: a narrow timing window may be hard to perceive because camera motion obscures the cue.
  • One confusing moment can be a local usability defect in an otherwise well-taught game; one clear tutorial cannot rescue a later mechanic that changes its rules without warning.
  • There is no established universal threshold separating fair difficulty from bad explanation, and no broad statistic showing how often players mistake one for the other.

A quick checklist

  • Can I state the immediate objective and success condition?
  • Do I know which action or mechanic is relevant?
  • Was that mechanic introduced, demonstrated, or made discoverable?
  • Can I tell whether my input registered?
  • Can I explain why the attempt failed?
  • Did the attempt teach me something that changes my next plan?
  • Which ability is the barrier: precision, timing, memory, navigation, puzzle reasoning, or strategy?
  • Is there a reminder, setting, or practice space aimed at that specific barrier?
  • Can another player reproduce the same confusion without being coached?

If you can answer these questions, you can describe the problem more accurately than “this game is too hard.” You may discover a demanding but coherent test of skill, judgment, or learning—or a section that has not communicated enough for a meaningful attempt.
