First find out exactly which parts the seller says are original fossil material and which are casts, repairs, fills, or reconstruction. Then check the specimen’s documented provenance, ownership, and lawful transfer—and seek qualified expert help when appropriate.
What does “authentic” mean for a dinosaur fossil?
Authenticity is not always an all-or-nothing question. An object may contain genuine fossil material while also including repairs, reconstructed sections, or material from more than one specimen. A cast, by contrast, is a reproduction made from a mold; fine detail does not prove that an object contains original fossil material.

Ask the seller to distinguish among original fossil, cast, restoration, fill, adhesive, and sculpted material. Also ask whether the object is one specimen, a composite assembled from multiple specimens, or a representative reconstruction. These distinctions affect what the object is and what its history can establish.

How can I tell if a dinosaur fossil is real?
Treat visual features as clues, not a pass-or-fail test. Color, texture, apparent age, and a convincing photograph cannot establish authenticity. Fossil fraud can involve a wholly fabricated object, genuine fossil material altered to appear more complete, or genuine pieces joined to represent a single animal.

The 2008 paper “Dinosaur Frauds, Hoaxes and Frankensteins” describes the Archaeoraptor case: examination found at least two and possibly five specimens assembled and presented as one. The example shows why plausible appearance is not enough; it does not provide a simple visual test for other fossils.
Egg-shaped objects need particular caution
The National Park Service notes that concretions and rounded rocks are often mistaken for dinosaur eggs. Genuine fossil eggs rarely remain as whole, undistorted egg-shaped objects; they are often squashed or distorted. This is a caution about common lookalikes, not a universal identification method for every fossil. See the NPS page Dinosaurs in the Fossil Record, last updated July 8, 2022.

What evidence should I check before buying?
For a purchase, prioritize traceable records over a persuasive label or a seller’s unsupported assurance. The American Museum of Natural History advises buyers to ask dealers to demonstrate in writing that they have full, unencumbered title and that the specimen was obtained in compliance with relevant laws, including those of its country of origin. Laws depend on where the fossil came from and where it is being transferred, so this general guidance is not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
Ask to review the paperwork before paying, and keep copies after the sale. A transfer record should describe the object and state the transfer terms. Earlier invoices, bills of sale, receipts, permits, or other supporting records can help document ownership and the specimen’s history. Field context—such as where and how it was collected—is scientifically important and should accompany the fossil when transferred where available. The museum’s guidance is in Acquiring Fossils.

Questions to put to the seller in writing
- Which exact parts are original fossil material, and which are casts, reconstructed, repaired, filled, or sculpted?
- Is this one specimen, a composite, or a representative reconstruction? If it is composite, what is known about each component?
- What identification, formation or locality, and collecting history does the seller claim? Which details are documented, and which are uncertain?
- What records support the seller’s legal title and the specimen’s lawful collection, export, import, and transfer?
- Will the seller provide a signed transfer record describing the object and sale terms, plus any available prior invoices, bills of sale, permits, or receipts?
- Can you review the documents before purchase and retain copies afterward?
Clear answers and records reduce uncertainty, but do not by themselves guarantee that every claim about a specimen is correct.
How do I know if a dinosaur bone is a cast?
Ask directly whether the bone is a cast and request a written breakdown of original material and reproduction or restoration. A cast reproduces a specimen’s shape from a mold, and a detailed surface can still be a reproduction. Do not rely on appearance alone to distinguish a cast from fossil material; the available museum guidance supports checking what the seller says the object contains and the records behind that claim.

Can a museum identify or authenticate it?
Some institutions offer educational identification, but that is not necessarily authentication for a commercial transaction or an appraisal. The University of Colorado Boulder Museum of Natural History’s Paleontology Section offers free educational fossil identification from a photograph and a general description of where an object was found. It asks for a scale bar or another object for scale when possible.

The museum says it will not identify or authenticate fossils in circumstances that could support illegal, unethical, or irresponsible trade, and it does not provide appraisals. Check its current policy before sending a request: Fossil Identifications.
Does a fossil certificate prove it is authentic?
No document is conclusive just because it is titled “certificate of authenticity.” The museum acquisition guidance emphasizes the evidence behind a claim: title, provenance, lawful acquisition, and transfer records. The sources here do not establish a universal standard for fossil certificates, so assess the underlying records and who issued them rather than relying on the certificate’s name.
How should I compare two fossils or offers?
Compare evidence rather than price or visual completeness. A more complete-looking object is not necessarily more original, better documented, or lawfully transferable. For each specimen, check:

- How clear and traceable is the provenance?
- What documentation supports title and lawful transfer?
